Actually, the cameraman estimated that the "launch" was slightly north of Catalina. Depending on where in LA the helicopter was, the incoming flight would appear to be north of Catalina.

I see a right turn in the contrail.

The phenomenon in question www.bbc.co.uk... was most likely a JL-1 (CSS-N-3) Type Cruise missile (en.wikipedia.org...) fired by a Jin Class SSBN (en.wikipedia.org... & maps.google.com...,120.995318&spn=0.0005,0.0005&t=h&q=40.715331,120.995318). The vapor trail indicates that it was a water-based launch due to the fact that water absorbs much of the thrust plume and land based launches create a considerable blowback plume.

The angle of the launch itself looks more like something that would be launched from an Alfa Class sub (en.wikipedia.org...) firing an SS-N-15/RPK-2 Viyuga (en.wikipedia.org...), but they were all supposedly scrapped in the 90's. But honestly, an Alfa would be the most likely to penetrate US coastal undersea detection nets due to it's size, speed, hull composition and visible weapons flight characteristics (what the plume looks like when fired over land and sea). It has been rumoured for years that North Korea got ahold of one through China.

However, the Jin Class saw 5 new launches this year. Previously, there were only two. The Jin is the other most likely candidate, also due to it's size, speed, hull composition and weapons complement with similar visible flight characteristics.

The fact that these are Chinese Naval Weapons Platforms does not necessarily indicate that it was a Chinese launch. The North Koreans have been expanding their naval fleet and are expected to "graduate from the green-water fleet" soon. This could be the first step. This would also gel with the current situation in North Korean leadership. Kim Jong-il is dying, and has chosen his 27 year old son Kim Jong-un to be his successor. Jong-un was recently promoted to Four Star General, and is being advised by Vice Regent Cheng Sung-taek until he has gained more experience in running national affairs. It would not be outside of North Korea's established patterns of sabre rattling during times of internal political unsettlement and international acts in south Korea percieved as a "slight" to the North such as the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, which Kim Il-sung continuously attempted to disrupt throughout the event.

Logically, the North Koreans would be more likely to initiate an act of hostility with us such as a "shot off the bow" as the Chinese are well aware that they can much more easily wage economic warfare against us igniting another cold war and would most likely rather not irradiate one of their most profitable ports. This however would not preclude the Chinese from selling the sub to NK, and the Chinese would likely turn a blind eye to NK aggression as they are already displeased with our monetary policies.

Always cold.
Not always cold enough to produce contrails. Not always moist enough to produce dense contrails.

US808 is a UPS flight? Okay, I have friends that work for UPS at LAX airport. Maybe I'll ask them if they've ever seen one make a contrail like that.

Side note, a huge percentage of the regular traffic out of LAX is UPS flights.

Why would this ONE flight confuse everyone? I respect that you worked on a sub, the Carver.

But I would still submit that with all your expertise, I have seen HUNDREDS of more missile tests than you from the Los Angeles area, and have repeated exposure to their trails, the trail structure, the trail length and duration, etc.

If this appeared to be a jet contrail I would simply say so. I don't think it's the case.

I would respectfully disagree for right now.

If this was a aircraft all they need to do is present the radar track and IFF info.

I too served in the navy as an Operations Specialist while on active duty. (fancy name for radar operator)

If they had this info which is required by all aircraft to have a IFF transponder and to have it turned on during flight at 35 miles out they should have been able to call this info up pretty quick and put this all to rest. But that has not been done.

Which means they lose all credibility (and confidence) in my eyes as this is a complete failure to track an aircraft in a post 9/11 world and is a totally unacceptable failure of the defense of our country.

but you said something of a test, or data from the time, have you got a link to that cause that would be cool to check out and compare to other reported sightings.

Ok. So every time flight 808 passes over Cali this week we get what looks like a missile contrail because of air currents and what not. (and the optical illusion effect) Alright, so *every* time this plane goes on it's route we can expect this? I'm not saying it's a wrong assumption but isn't that just a *bit* odd? Why aren't other planes this week in (In Cali even) having this happen, IF indeed we are even talking about the same aircraft every time? Is it just weird air currents, is that the explanation??

Couldn't have said it better myself. Total failure in defense capability. North Korea does not put transponder into their missile systems. They fly dark. That's why they scare me.

In the video taken by the media you can clearly see a fireball at the end of whatever was making the trail. It seemed to glow and flutter a whole rainbow of colors. Is that standard for a commercial airplane or an "special edition" add on?

I may be a little late, but here's a loop I made of the "stages firing", or whatever you want to call it. Light reflecting off the "plane" or whatever. I created a youtube account a few minutes ago just for this clip.

I think the argument that it was a plane is weak. Remember that this occurred during rush hour, 5 PM on a Monday. Many people saw this occur.

I think the local news agency that first reported this probably got some eyewitness accounts from people who saw the event in the surrounding areas.

If it was a plane, it was a plane that has never before been seen.

No.
US808 is a US Air flight.
There was a UPS flight at about the same time but on a more northerly route.

Check this out! Photos taken from San Fran in 2006. Very similar. Conclusion: Probably a missle from Vandenburg. Very interesting!
