A very enjoyable post. Personally, I don't think it's a hearing aid. I think we have a legitamite and very chance documentation of someone using
secret technology (ala Tesla-esque) OR we have someone who has traveled to this era, perhaps just to see the Chaplin premeire! --YOU are a fan of
Chaplin (you bought the DVDs), so why wouldn't a person who is a fan from a distant future want to travel back to see the real thing, at the
premeire.
This gives me an idea. Imagine about 100 years in the future, and we (humanity) have achieved time travel. Interlude thought: as a kid I thought
about people who only had radio shows to listen to, before there was TV. I thought, how could they stand that, just voices and no picture? Now,
think of kids who will be born into a world of flat panel HDTVs --complete with 3D. They might look back at what my generation had and think, how
could they stand that, just a flat picture and no 3D, plus the TVs were huge, and with blurry pictures (no HD).
Advance 100 years (or sooner, or later, give or take a few decades). Time travel is an everyday event. They can freely travel back in time, do
whatever they want, with NO ramifications because of the multiple worlds theory. Yeah, they screw up the eras they visit, but it never affects their
own time because a new universe branches off from the time era they visited and interacted with. Afterwards, they *safely* return to their own
timeline. But, here's the thougth that the previous paragraphs lead up to...
What if in the future, once time travel is common, what if instead of movies, or in addition to movies, you could purchase a time-travel "key," that
allows you to travel to a specific event. Much like we rent/buy a DVD to enter a certain realm/world/story. They would purchase this "key" to return
to a time period to witness whatever was for sale. If you're a WWII buff, like me, perhaps you might check-out one of Hitler's speeches, or the
landing at Normandy or the Battle of Britain or the Battle of the Bulge or Hiroshima. Yes, going back *in person* would mean you should take some
precautions, since death in any timeline would be pretty much permanent for you. So, you'd take some gear, some advanced body suits that would pretty
much absorbe any/most lethal damages you might experience.
So, someone in the future rents/purchases/checks-out from the library, a "key" in whatever form, to take care of the time travel details, the
calculations, etc. that everyday people won't bother with. Think microwave ovens. We use them all the time, but does any of you know how they work,
and if so, could you repair one? Probably not. But, you are VERY fluent with its operation. Same with these time-travel keys. Much like DVDs, you
buy/rent/check-out one, put it into the machine, step inside and voila! There you are, wherever you wanted to be. Just be careful, and it brings you
back automatically after an hour, two or more (your choice).
These people might think about us, with our HDTV with 3D, how could they stand it, just watching something on a screen, even if in 3D, without really
going there to experience it in person...
However, the ghoulish nature of the person using the cell phone thingy makes me wonder if we are doomed to look like we are from an episode of the
Adam's Family in the future.
Dean Koontz has a GREAT novel that is surprisingly about time travel... from the past. Nazi's from WWII Germany develop the "Star Road" to travel
into the future. Perhaps this time traveler was from the late 1890s, using Tesla tech. Just some thoughts to chew on.
