My guess is that she checking her hearing aid/hearing device/earphone. It is probably bulky and/or doesn't fit well.

She's speaking because possibly the transmitter is separate and was worn under the clothing or in a pocket. So she would have to speak to find out whether she is hearing anything.

Here's an ad for a hearing aid from 1938, where the amplifier and transmitter are worn separately.

Battery-Operated Hearing Aid Is Easily Concealed (Aug, 1938)

Did ya'll notice the shoes? similar to the victorian-era button-hook shoes, with a low heel, (womans) style, but, the toes appeared way too long to me, pointed, and seemingly hinged. the only thing i can glean from the hand is talking on a cel phone. By the way, the first cel phones were much bigger, with an obvious, foot-long antenna. But I think I saw an image of the person disappearing in FRONT of the guy who walked between the subject and the camera, as in a double exposure.

maybe in 1938, but not in the '20's. I would be extremely surprised if it were a hearing aid, besides, to whom was she speaking?

On second thought, she I'll bet she DOES have a mobile phone!

I found a pdf from the FCC that says cellphones are not a new thing. But they were called two way radios or mobile radio telephones.

"A Short History of Radio, with an Inside Focus on Mobile Radio"

Radio History

(hope that link works, it's pretty long)

First off, it can't be a cellphone, how could one possibly work when they barely have low-frequency radio broadcast towers let alone high-freq cellphone towers and satellites...

No cell phone towers was actually covered on page 1.
I think the general consensus is that if sh was a time traveler from the future, her "cell phone" would probably not need a tower.

I think she is just blocking the wind from her ear. Or perhaps keeping her ear warm. I am not a believer in time travel.

It was cold. She wasn't wearing earmuffs. She was shielding her ear from coldness. All the while whispering under her breath that it is friggin freezin out here.

....or not

Or maybe she saw the guy recording and shielding part of her face was her attempt to not be on the film. She looked back out of curiousity. Then noticed he was still filming and whispered to herself under her breath what the... I dont even.

....or not

Since this particular time traveler appears to have been a Charlie Chaplin fan, it might be worthwhile to check other newsreel or promotional films of other Chaplin film debuts to see if the lady is at any of those, too.

G'day All,

It’s a silent film people; it didn’t matter if you asked for direction from the director as long as you didn’t look at the camera. The woman is a man and he has his hand up to cover the fact that he is so, no time traveller here folks.

I have to go with whoever said it is probably a small radio S/he is holding up to their ear.
And either singing along.. or just mumbling to them self, as older people often do.

id love for it to be a time traveler,
and who can really say that it is or it isnt? lol

I just feel it is probably a simple explanation.

and the small radio seems to fit best.

The only thing that I can think of is protecting the eyes from the sun, optometry being what it was in 1928. I find it hard to tell if they were talking at all, if not to someone off camera. As a sidenote, I think that there is a better chance it was a radio than a cell phone, the argument for why it's not a radio doesn't really hold water when you're trying to prove it's a cell. On the other hand maybe he's using it to take voice notes, otherwise I'll bet he gets a lot of dropped calls. Interesting find thanks for posting.

How about a walkie talkie type device?

You don't need towers for those.

A very enjoyable post. Personally, I don't think it's a hearing aid. I think we have a legitamite and very chance documentation of someone using secret technology (ala Tesla-esque) OR we have someone who has traveled to this era, perhaps just to see the Chaplin premeire! --YOU are a fan of Chaplin (you bought the DVDs), so why wouldn't a person who is a fan from a distant future want to travel back to see the real thing, at the premeire.

This gives me an idea. Imagine about 100 years in the future, and we (humanity) have achieved time travel. Interlude thought: as a kid I thought about people who only had radio shows to listen to, before there was TV. I thought, how could they stand that, just voices and no picture? Now, think of kids who will be born into a world of flat panel HDTVs --complete with 3D. They might look back at what my generation had and think, how could they stand that, just a flat picture and no 3D, plus the TVs were huge, and with blurry pictures (no HD).

Advance 100 years (or sooner, or later, give or take a few decades). Time travel is an everyday event. They can freely travel back in time, do whatever they want, with NO ramifications because of the multiple worlds theory. Yeah, they screw up the eras they visit, but it never affects their own time because a new universe branches off from the time era they visited and interacted with. Afterwards, they *safely* return to their own timeline. But, here's the thougth that the previous paragraphs lead up to...

What if in the future, once time travel is common, what if instead of movies, or in addition to movies, you could purchase a time-travel "key," that allows you to travel to a specific event. Much like we rent/buy a DVD to enter a certain realm/world/story. They would purchase this "key" to return to a time period to witness whatever was for sale. If you're a WWII buff, like me, perhaps you might check-out one of Hitler's speeches, or the landing at Normandy or the Battle of Britain or the Battle of the Bulge or Hiroshima. Yes, going back *in person* would mean you should take some precautions, since death in any timeline would be pretty much permanent for you. So, you'd take some gear, some advanced body suits that would pretty much absorbe any/most lethal damages you might experience.

So, someone in the future rents/purchases/checks-out from the library, a "key" in whatever form, to take care of the time travel details, the calculations, etc. that everyday people won't bother with. Think microwave ovens. We use them all the time, but does any of you know how they work, and if so, could you repair one? Probably not. But, you are VERY fluent with its operation. Same with these time-travel keys. Much like DVDs, you buy/rent/check-out one, put it into the machine, step inside and voila! There you are, wherever you wanted to be. Just be careful, and it brings you back automatically after an hour, two or more (your choice).

These people might think about us, with our HDTV with 3D, how could they stand it, just watching something on a screen, even if in 3D, without really going there to experience it in person...

However, the ghoulish nature of the person using the cell phone thingy makes me wonder if we are doomed to look like we are from an episode of the Adam's Family in the future.

Dean Koontz has a GREAT novel that is surprisingly about time travel... from the past. Nazi's from WWII Germany develop the "Star Road" to travel into the future. Perhaps this time traveler was from the late 1890s, using Tesla tech. Just some thoughts to chew on.

Has ATS come to a consensus?

I can't read all 60 pages but am dying to hear the debunking theories

A summary would be nice

"The advent of electrical recording made it possible to use microphones to capture the sound of the performance. The leading record labels switched to the electric microphone process in 1925, and most other record companies followed their lead by the end of the decade. Electrical recording increased the flexibility and sound quality. However, the performance was still cut directly to the recording medium, so if a mistake was made the recording was useless."

From en.wikipedia.org...

Presumably, there's a wire leading to her mic from somewhere.........

mixonline.com...

That might be the "cell phone" right there.

Last but not least, sorry if this has been mentioned, but this isn't a scene from the film. You are looking at the outside of Mann's Sp? Chinese Theater during the premier. Notice the movie "poster" on the wall to the right of the screen??? again, this person "isn't" in the film and "isn't" and extra. it's a person walking by the theater.
