Forget about the flu for a moment..

Yellowstone is rumbling again!
There have been 4 very recent quakes today north-west of the lake, all four 2+ on the R. scale. 3 of them happened within the last half hour. Check it out by yourself:

Finally! Some excitement for this dusty ol' thread!

Check out how shallow this swarm is...and 4 quakes in one hour? I clicked on the map, and it started with just one red square, and when I zoomed in there was four!

Yep and it appears to be near YML in the middle of the "mounds"

Hmmm...GEE still showing some ripples ...

March 2009 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary
volcanoes.usgs.gov...

During the month of March 2009, 66 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone region. The largest event was a magnitude 2.4 on March 3 at 2:37 AM MDT, located about 10 miles East of Canyon Junction, WY. There were no swarms during the month of March.

This beats that so far ...

Not all are very shallow (2.9, 0.1, 0.2, 12.3), which makes it a bit worrying, imo.

For a moment I thought the USGS was blatantly censoring data, but then I found out that theinterveners.org... site was not updating webicorder images, probably due to some internal problem.

For Webicorders checkout here: www.seis.utah.edu...
And for live data check out GEE by adding the WY network and its related stations.

EDIT

By the way, I tried to download seismic data from YML and to me it seems that there were many more earthquakes that what reported. Most of them are probably too small to be correctly located though (since to determine their location they have to be triangulated by at least two other seismic stations).
It also seems that a flowage of some sort (liquid, mud, gas, etc) has been triggered at least four times after the biggest events (by the way, 2.5-2.7 magnitude earthquakes aren't big at all).

EDIT2

Also, new earthquakes on the UoU list have been reviewed, and they're all very shallow.

If you guys haven't watched the show that was mentioned in this thread a few pages ago (History Channel - How the Earth was Made ---or something like that--- Yellowstone), I recommend it.

One of the most interesting parts, IMO, was the portion filmed on the lake. They talk about a tour boat in the early 1900s that caught fire and sank to the bottom. Then the scientist takes her boat next to that site and you see half the boat out of the water. This was all part of the segment dealing with the lifting of the land in that area, which includes the lake.

Of course, if you couple that visual of a boat being raised out of the water by the bottom of the lake swelling upwards along with the water discharge tables that we have been watching (link), it could help support a conclussion that something is happening near the fishing bridge, under the lake.

Remember how all the quakes back in Dec/Jan swarm, when mapped, seemed to look like a chimney ??? Well, even something similar is covered in this History Channel show. They talk about how scientists can now see 400 miles down and now believe there is a chimney formation raising from way,way down the earth's crust to nearly the area where the hot spot magma chamber is now....and if the two connect, there is way more magma available for a volcano that they thought before.

Interesting show. And, for those with High Def, it is filmed in high def.

Highly recommend it. You will recognize the players, too, from YVO, UofU, Park Service, etc.

always wondering

Anyone know why three of the helicorders at Yellowstone haven't been "on" for a while now?

YUF Upper Falls, last recording I have is from 3/25/09

YNR Norris Junction, last recording I have is from 3/25/09

and

YFT Old Faithful, last recording I have is 4/17/09

is it normal for these things to be off line for over a month?

always wondering

Over the last week the outflow from Yellowstone Lake has increased steadily. As the spring sun intensifies, the melting snow enters the aquifer. The park is thawing out and water levels will add pressure to the system. According to Jake Lowenstern, hydro-thermal explosions can happen when you have an increase in lake levels and the system is repressurized.

WOW, I was feeling kinda lonely in this room, and then the party returned. Yellowstone is only interesting when it's rumbling. If you read more about it, you will find it's not what you think it was.

Well I'm watching the quakes again lol.
I got bored of the one man show, so I only checked back and forth every now and again. I live in El Paso so the swine flue is 'bother some,' but it doesn't jerk my attention as much as YS does lol.

Watching, waiting etc.
