I really thought that this thing was going to erupt.

Now by the looks of it nothing is going to happen.

Lame.

Though it is a good thing. I was just expecting it to come...now I stocked up on water and ordered a mask for nothing

Incidentally, let's get some more clarity on the harmonic earthquake versus wind debate. Here is today's data from the YTP station, close to the Lake. This seems to look close to what we were describing as harmonic yesterday. Clearly it's just experiencing wind or is more sensitive, because I can't imagine any legitimate "harmonics" wouldn't be picked up elsewhere. Conclusion: It's not harmonics and the majority of us (including me) are pretty clueless when it comes to interpreting this data.

www.seis.utah.edu...

Notice that the DC reference on the right are different. What looks like harmonics on the YTP is merely because it's turned up higher, it appears.

Hey guys! I've just found out that in GEE you can also add other UUSS Yellowstone park seismic stations instead of only LKWY!

Here's the procedure:
Open the Real Time Viewer
Edit>Station Chooser
Click "Add Network"
Wait for all networks in the new window to load
Select "WY - Yellowstone Wyoming Seismic Network"
Wait for new stations to load in the Station Chooser screen
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list - here are WY Stations! They have also appeared on the world map.
Now select the stations you want, then load real-time data as usual.

I don't know if any body has been watching the water flow but this is interesting.

I know, it's so lame that millions of people aren't going to die.

If you go back and read the USGS learnings from Mt Saint Helens most recent dome building eruption the days of small spikes (go back and look at June lake data looks just like LKWY now) were mistaken for settling of the mountain or geothermal events when in actuality it was magma building preasure and breaking rocks.

Cheer up buddy. Maybe you'll get lucky and some other calamity will strike so you can drink your water and wear your mask.

Well I said that it's a good thing that it's not going to happen, but lame that I went out and stocked up on water and canned foods and was being paranoid about it and it ends up not happening.

Well it might not necessarily happen now, but who knows what's going to happen six months from now.

I have been watching this for days now and the water flow is not right.

Check:

waterdata.usgs.gov...

waterdata.usgs.gov...

The lake is out putting more than is should on one and as really slowed down on the other.

What conclusion (if any) could we draw from that YMR fat spike at 18:18 or thereabouts? I'm new at this so am not sure if this is significant.

All jokes aside everyone....

Does anyone know for sure if Yellowstone is going to erupt, yes or no?

NO, not even the respected geologist and other scientists that are monitoring the situation.

But... the fact that Wyoming Department of Homeland Security and FEMA are also monitoring the situation seems, to me at least, indicate that the potential is there. How destructive a potential or certain a potential is anyone guess at this time.

I think tomorrow will prove if we can sleep easily again. I think we have seen the worse of it. I am betting on a quiet day again tomorrow... However, I am nearly always wrong

In layman's terms, describe what that data means? What's happening in the water?

Yes. 100% probability that it will erupt.

However, there is no way to tell when. Could be thousands of years more.

Excellent find- everyone should read this. Here's a link to the Dec. 31 seismogram for this area- the latter part of the day is identical to the readings that were freaking us out, but it looks the same as the readings for today. Chalk one up for the "wind" theory.

Tantalus Creek and Yellowstone River are not the same system. I think that Tantalus creek feeds into Yellowstone River, but the gauges are separated by over 10 miles as a crow flies.

I mentioned earlier, many published sources say that Lake Yellowstone is under the influence of the submerged geothermal systems..

They really need a gauge where the Yellowstone river feeds Lake Yellowstone (inlet) *and* the outlet. That way any deformation on the lake bottom could be measured quickly and easily.. by measuring the difference in volumes.

Like putting a brick in a full pail of water, and marking a line, this would be an easy way to notice any significant changes, above mere seasonal averages etc.

I know that, I was asking if anyone was sure that Yellowstone wasn't going to erupt anytime soon.
