what Island are you on? and if Kilauea have you noticed any more tremor activity. I am collecting some ideas for this Yellowstone thing. I know the island is on a orange alert.

The wave patterns from today are from the Indonesian EQs.

Pick any quake over 7.0 from this list and compare it to a graph from the same UTC time and date from this site. You can find those wave patterns in almost all of them. So it looks like that is very common and is what shows up with massive quakes around the globe. CRAZY to think that some quakes are big enough to literally shake the entire planet. This has been a GREAT thread. So much info and so much fun. I am learning lots. THANKS!!!

They(the geologists) said that quake in 04 that created the tsunami 9.5 I think shook the planet so hard , it disturbed the rotation. Imagine what the sizmo gear looked like then.

I know that is just insane. This is the graph for LKWY on 12-25-2004, the day of the tsunami quake. It is INSANE!

For those who say there is harmonic tremor, why is it that there has been no outcry from seismologists around the globe? Anyone can access the Univ. of Utah data, and I'm sure that seismologists around the world are eagerly watching. If harmonic tremor truly existed, I don't see how news about it wouldn't spread like wildfire among seismologists. Even if you contend that the USGS is covering it up, they have no ability to keep seismologists around the globe from talking about it, and you can't keep it quiet in the internet age. As best I can tell, it's mainly non-seismologists on internet boards who are saying it's harmonic tremor.

So my challenge to those who contend that it is harmonic tremor: please post a link from any verifiable seismologist who contends that there is harmonic tremor in Yellowstone.

A 9.5 magnitude earthquake is 100 times bigger in size than a 7.5 magnitude one and releases about 1000 times more energy! No wonder it did that, I think it's been one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded in history.

We just passed a 24-hour period with not a single quake- significant milestone.

The silence may end up being the most significant. If all the recent rumbles were movement of material to new locations then the force responsible for moving the material may still be pushing but no more room left - BOOM

Actually there was a small EQ early in the morning around 9:04 A.M UTC that has not been recorded yet,

and one somewhere around Madison River (YMR) that occurred roughly at 1:17 UTC today.

Just really small ones..

I'm still keeping a very close eye on ground deformation.

I was under th impression that there has been no new ground deformation measured since this whole thing began? and I was also under the impression that the deformation will be the tel tale sign of an imminent eruption? Of course i am not very knowledgable in this subject.

There has been movement via the GPS stuff, that is clear to see. What isn't clear is if the readings are accurate.

Hold on while I get a good one.....

This is the chart for LKWY.. Notice that the last reading is the highest since 1999... Most of the other sites are trending down..

What does it all mean? Kinda like reading tea leaves... but no major movement. ie.. Hollywood stuff for sure..

Edited one last time to try to cram all this in this space..

According to the USGS there is some potential for hydrothermic explosions but say a much lower potential for volcanic activity. This was posted on Jan 2nd.

Does anyone know why LKWY has all the spikes? I have been dying to ask that and am just getting around to it? Are they underwater vents/ geysers?

I wonder if they're "pinging" the lake?
Look at www.quake.utah.edu...
What are those noises all about the same magnitude and duration almost evenly spaced every couple hours or so.
Or are they sharp cracking noises showing up?

Something just came to my attention and I can't believe I didn't remember it before now. It's quite possible that the Earthquakes that keep happening on the west coast of America could be leading up to the big quake. The west coast is due for a big Earthquake soon. However, this still doesn't mean that something isn't going on at Yellowstone.

I wonder, after viewing the seismic webicorders this evening, if there is some distinct evidence of harmonic tremors showing up?? Anyone willing to hazard an opinion?

Madison River chart is also showing some activity around 18:18 (pretty solid) and 19:15 if I'm reading this correctly.

sorry, meant to introduce myself. I live in Colorado and have been enjoying this thread tremendously in the past few days. Have learned tons!

Just want to note that while we're talking about a marked proportional rise, we're also looking at millimeters. We should be concerned by feet or meters in a short period of time. If, as someone described a few posts ago, there is no more room for material to rise and pressure is now building for a boom, then I think we'd be seeing a ballooning of the dome.

New important earthquake scenarios, the New Madrid, the Wabash Valley and the East Tennessee seismic zones. A new analysis employs new and more reliable hazard and inventory data that has not been used before.

The project is managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, and the work was undertaken in partnership with the Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management at the George Washington University, with contributions for the 8 State Geological Surveys, IEM, FEMA, US Geological Survey and CUSEC. The report is available for download. A must see.
