Israel stopped an arms sale to Georgia on request from Moscow. So the United States isn't going to be best pleased that Israel is taking orders from the Kremlin.

I can tell you, that in private, Washington and Brussels will be deeply annoyed at Georgia.

The Georgian President expected Western help. Even if Russia sent the tanks in, America would pick up the phone and ask Moscow to stop. They haven't and America won't.
[edit on 11-8-2008 by infinite]

America has asked them to stop, all resolutions have been futile because Russia can and has VETO'd them... read CNN FFS.

Also, did you not see the footage of Bush yelling at Putin during the Olympic games because of it?

Any American President, Republican or Democrat will not, would not allow this to stand.

Cheney wants revenge for a strong supporter of U.S. efforts in Iraq.

Pull your head out of the ground, things are about to heat up.

Same To you, and every other member of ATS...

BUT, looks like we might hae dodged the bullet...

Georgia signs ceasefire pledge

Gobi is still under direct Russia Ground assalut, but at least, there IS ONE peice of news that isnt bad...

Mr Saakashvili said the EU mediators will head to Moscow to try to persuade Russia to accept the ceasefire.

Meanwhile a senior Russian general said there were no plans to move troops further into Georgian territory.

On second thought, Russia is likely to not sign...
And the Russia General is saying one thing, as troops Roll into Gobi...

Who realy knows what is going on...

You do make me laugh.

I read your other post in which are demanding war with Russia, tell me, are you willing to go and fight or just sit on ATS ranting all the time?

America will only become involved if Ukraine becomes the next part of the conflict because the conflict will spread into Eastern and Central Europe. There is no sign of it - yet.

I have been to war for my country, and I will go again if it means that I can look down the barrel of my rifle and stare into the whites of a Russians eyes.

They are the greatest soldiers, exacting the greatest toll of any nation during WW2. It would be an honor to fight against them in a war that would go down in history as the greatest war ever.

it's the usual story with bullys, stand up to them and the run away crying. the us claim friendship and allegiance with georgia and then desert them when they are invaded. what's more, the us claim to wish to fight in defence of freedom, yet ignore a friend and ally that has been invaded.

russia showed they were willing to take on the US when they sent their troops into a country that was allied to the US, if the US backs down they lose all face and show themselves to be spineless hypocritical cowards.

go on america, your bluff's been called, lets see who the real military super power in the world is.

You do realize that South Ossetia is NOT a nation but part of Georgia, right?

Yeah on paper... if South Ossetians want to be Russian citizens and hold Russian passports then they deserve Russian protection.

So if you see it as the South Ossetians being Russian citizens, then Russia is justified to take action to protect them.

And if you see them as Georgian citizens, then Russia is justified to take action to stop Georgia's genocide against it's own people. (hey at least the USA/UK aren't getting called bullies this time eh)

i think they have a moral obligation to fight for georgia. allies are allies, if you accept the offer of allegiance from a country you have to be willing to support them.

all those loyal and patriotic americans screaming support our troops for the past five years have a moral obligation to demand it of the US government, because at the end of the day, georgian mothers lost sons supporting the same troops in a war they have no part in.

a debt is owed.

oh, i have no doubt america will wuss out of this aswell, you can already see that there are droves of people claiming that the georgians aren't really allies in the same way people claimed that the kurds weren't really a nation, it's all just bull crap to hide the fact that america has neither the will power nor the discipline to go to war on a large scale against a relatively equal adversary.

Or the Shi'ites in Iraq. The gov sent down flyers telling them to rise up and overthrow Hussein during the first gulf war. Then we walked away and let them suffer the consequences. Saddam took his revenge on them in numerous creative ways, including submerging some suspected Shi'ite insurgents in vats of acid (among other things).

Personaly, i was outraged when Turkey attacked the Kurds...

I hold the KURDS in higher ground then Turkey... The Kurds helped the US, offered EVERYTHING, Turkey did nothing, and did everything they could to give the US trouble...

After we toppled Saddam, the US should have 'made' Kurdistan in Northern Iraq... WOuld that have solved anything, probaly not, would it have pissed off tons of people, DAMM RIGHT...

Would the US have made an ally, yes

The Kurds gave the US thier support, and the US for the most part shoved them aside after they got what they wanted...

Now, the US is giving Georgia the cold shoulder... Its a shame..

I believe Turkey allowed us to use their air bases when we desperately needed them to "liberate" Iraq. So we owed Turkey too.

How lovely and creative. Vats of acid. I would have never thunk of that. What a great guy.

Years ago I was involved in a website devoted to medieval torture techniques (I was hosting it). Anyway at the time it seemed harmless right? Its not like some nutcase is going to build an iron maiden.

As it happens Husseins sons WERE using those methods, including an iron maiden. It made me sick because I had to wonder if they ever did a quick net search and found that site (its not like there are tons of sites devoted to the topic) and this site was supposedly the best, even won yahoo awards or some such thing.
