Yeah, it appears they are mounting an offensive campaign. With all the armor and troops there now, one can almost assume Russia has intentions of going into Georgia.

Russia may be insuring that they have enough forces to repel another major Georgian attack. Remember - Georgia has over 35,000 troops in the area, Russia has only 1,000 - 2,000 in South Ossetia.

Georgia has withdrawn, and Russia claimed a cease-fire would be possible once this happens but it's not happening.

Actually Russia claims that Georgians must also cease fire first. Western media is saying they withdrew, but not saying if their artillery is still shelling S. Ossetia.

Maloy, I know you are saying now that Russia want's to make sure the Georgian retreat is indeed that .. but all this extra fire and man power now?

As I said - Georgia can still overrun S. Ossetia if it wanted to. Hell knows what Saakashvilli is thinking. Russia wants to make sure the episode of August 7th when 10 Russian peacekeepers died does not repeat.

A show of force by the Russians will discourage any more aggresive tactics Georgians may have planned.

Thats because they want to keep us in the dark for now.
and don't panic the people with another war, specially during time of International Peace

Pshhk. There is no such thing as international peace. If this war heats up within the next few days, my guess is that lots of nations will be withdrawing from the event for safety concerns. Heck, there could even be Marines in the Olympics, and who knows, maybe the United States will be needing that few extra man power in the next few days?

There are also unconfirmed reports that fighting is still raging in several smaller towns and villages east of Tskhinvalli. If true, then Georgia has not abided by the Russian peace resolution. It also did not call off the state of war, which means it is still effectively waging war in S. Ossetia.

Fair enough Maloy, but Russia bombing Georgia's military airport near the Georgian capital seems to be overstepping the bounds there.

If it was about a total defensive posture by Russia in Osetia aimed to repel Georgia, there would be no need for the mass shelling of Georgian cities.

Oh, and those "peace-keepers" the West are calling Russia soldiers.

Lol, and you have to wonder if the media is shielding Americans of what is going on? In the medias defense I have to say that it's good they are not getting the rest of the country all rilled up. Tonight I was visiting some friends. We were watching the games on TV and I brought up the who Georgia thing. One of them had heard about it and two others had no idea. But I guess if you aren't addicted to the news then it wouldn't be of that much importance.

What mass shelling of Georgian cities. There were only several strikes in Gori. None within Tbilisi.

And that military airport could be where the remainder of Georgian attack aircraft is, which has been constantly conducting raids on S. Ossetia. It is part of the "Georgian offensive capabilities" that I mentioned.

That's pretty much the same deal here Styki. There was a short thing on an Australian news show about how much the cost of petrol (gas) would rise if the BTC pipeline that ran through Georgia was hit! A finance analyst was guessing what it would go to.

I suppose the glitz of the games has taken over, and there's a general apathy, even 'sympathy fatigue' among people who probably just think 'oh well, another war, who cares'.

People will only care when it begins to affect them, fuel prices or otherwise.

I know, its sad what the media does, but that's why I got all my news sources open in tabs. BBC, RussiaToday, CBC, CNN, and Al Jazeera. If you get an opinion from everyone, then you can make your own decisions, not just eat the ones given to you. Anyways, I'm off to bed. This is all exciting (in the most not-sickest of ways) because this is major events knocking at our doors, but I need sleep. I hope to wake up tomorrow and not have Russian missiles lying all around my house. Good night!
Peace

I guess you were right, Maloy: in another breaking update from Sky (via the AFP), Georgia has said that it has only temporarily withdrawn from the town of Tskhinvali - and that they are going to stay in the region.

It does seem that Georgia has temporarily retreated in order to buy time, redeploy troops and change tactics, perhaps. Russia are ploughing in more troops and ships because they know that this is just the end of the beginning, rather than the beginning of the end.

Both will never stand down

there is only one solution to this and its bad

It's somewhat of a catch 22. Georgia would have to stave off a Russian invasion from entering into Georgia proper.

Russia has air superiority which is a tremendous advantage.

I really believe that it's a good thing that most people are not aware. There is kind of a pandora's box type effect with caring about these things. I love being able to go chill with friends and watch the games. But I am also interested about getting home and checking out the development's in what happened.

It's like the "Men In Black" movies. The world is in danger depending on the actions of a few people. It's just best that most people don't realize this.

The whole situation is just crazy. The only thing that matters is how far is Russia going to go and at the same time when is the west going to step in? If they realize diplomatic efforts are not going to work is the west going to look at other options?

I really hope Turkey does not get into this but if it does I can see it getting out of hand fast. On "Russia Today" they are saying that America may be partially at fault for this escalation...
