Rights group challenges Russian version of war

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Human rights activists on Wednesday challenged Russia's estimate of the death toll from Georgia's assault on breakaway South Ossetia and rejected Moscow's assertion that the rebel capital had been destroyed.

"The damage is significant, especially in the city centre, and many houses hit were obviously not military targets -- houses, shops and the hospital. But I would not describe it as a city razed to the ground," Anna Neistat of Human Rights Watch said by phone from the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali.

Looks like Russia will be getting visits from other countries as well. Not to support Russia but to give their views on why Russia's actions were uncalled for....

However, in her first statement since the casefire, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, was firm with Moscow. She said it was "totally unacceptable" for Georgia's democratically elected government to be challenged, her spokesman said. She believes that the "sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Georgia are non-negotiable."

Mrs Merkel will hold talks with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev on Friday in Russia's Black Sea port of Sochi, just a few miles north of its border with Georgia. Her spokesman said he will "make it clear" that problems in the Caucasus "cannot be solved militarily."

Guess this is to show solidarity and also perhaps to place diplomats in key areas to prevent escalations. So not only does Russia need to be careful but so do others.

IMO there's more than just humanitarian "aid" going in

Germany was the first (and that I saw, the only "western" country) to denounce the shelling of Tskhinvali by Georgia, so this makes things even.

^There may be a reason Georgia purchased US camouflage,so US soldiers could "blend in".

I just seen on BBC News a report where Georgian civilians where fleeing there homes and trying to get to Tbilisi.
They said that the militia(not the Russian army)where taking people away and burning down homes.
Now i m not saying that mean any of this is true ,But one thing i did see was the fear in there faces, which i dont think i v ever seen before on a report.

It just made me think how lucky i was not to be there and i now feel even more sorry for all who is caught up in this conflict.( on all sides)

I really hope peace will find a way,I m just not so sure it will this time.

We don't know the status of the Turkish armed forces, they might get involved at some stage if the capital get attacked.

What makes you think the Turks would get involved?

Well, The Turks never liked Russia.
Also Turkey has a naval presence in the Black Sea and is a NATO member. The only reason, to me, they haven't under taken action sofar is because they're a member of NATO.
If they would have taken action and get shot at it would be seen as an attack on NATO itself and therfore the conflict would turn into a full fledged war.

Hence why I said why they haven't undertaken any action sofar....
Turkey will only make a move if it is threatened themselfs or under NATO command.

Russia is about to run home now that the US is coming. I just saw on the tube that their commander has said they have already ordered the troops to return back home to their permanent locations.
Looks like the humanitarian aid is scaring them off....errr, i meant diplomacy.

I think it's prudent for Russians, to try and avoid a military confrontation with the US. It would be prudent for the US to behave likewise.

Following a day of dramatic developments in the Russia-Georgia conflict, Russian forces have sunk several vessels in Georgia's military port of Poti.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid reports from the scene.

She's also the reporter that reported of the Ruissian build up in Senaki last night.
