well they will need more than 16 tanks to take the capitol. i think reports may be overblown...

Its much more than that. Its more like 60-70 with more I beleive are being brought in thru Gori.

If it is the Abkhazians and South Ossetians , It's a civil war , an internal dispute . Nobody is invading a soveriegn country anymore .

I tried to capture some video from the TV but my (it's not even mine) camera is worthless, but what I saw on Sky News here in Portugal via cable TV (Netcabo) confirms what has been said.

I don't know how to distinguish between Russian tanks and Ossetian or Georgian, but they were not like those with those "bricks" (that I suppose are the reactive armour, as someone said) over them, they look "naked", just like the old tanks from WWII.

the clip they are using (With current audio from the guy on the ground over it) Is from a couple days ago.. And so it isn't showing anything that has happend in the last 24 hours or so.

Btw.. someone posted a single pic above.. Those look like BMP's

Its wierd though the way the guy on the ground is describing the "Russian" tanks.. All tanks in that area both russian and georgian are technicaly "Russian" lol..

Don't know if the Georgian tanks have reactive armor blocks or not. Maybe some do and some don't just don't know.

I think its going to be quite some time before we get any real video from the current situation on the ground.

I fear though for the reporters there.. They just might become targets if they see something they are not supposed to.

Who really is in command of Russian troops? I doubt with their chain of command the army is taking actions on it's own accord without asking or getting orders?

I'm watching CNN right now and they're saying that the vehicles are still moving towards Tbilisi.

yeah i was thinking that too so i looked at it on google earth. Tibillisi is surrounded by high mountains the only entrance from gori appears to be a cut in the mountains near Mhtketa. all the airfields are located much deeper behind the actual city of Tibillisi. The only way the russians could take it would be to airdrop troops on the airfields and land transports.

long and short Tibillisi seems to be a city in a very good defensive position. it will be a tough egg to crack. russia will have to go hard or go home. no halfways.

CNN:

Russians have left the road towards Tbilisi, turning towards an abandoned Georgian military base. Possibly to destroy it.

The guy who is travling with the Russian convoy on CNN has just stated the convoy has turned around. Maybe this is cat and mouse they are saying or maybe Russia is going to stay where they are and set up a buffer zone?

Does Russia's left hand know what the right hand is doing?

BBC News UK now reporting a breach of the ceasefire in Gori, looting going on and buildings being destroyed. Video and reports of a 60 strong armoured convoy of Russian troops heading south towards the capital Tbilisi.

In the CNN article if you read to the bottom...

Meanwhile Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, flanked by the leaders of Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Latvia in a separate media briefing, said Russian tanks were attacking and "rampaging" through the Georgian town of Gori despite the cease-fire. Video Watch Saakashvili speak »

What the Georgian president says.

However journalists in Gori, the birthplace of former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, said they had seen no Russian tanks. Residents there told the journalists they had earlier seen "some" Russian tanks, but not in large numbers.

What journalists in Gori said.

A Russian military official also disputed Georgia's claims. He said Russian forces were at an abandoned Georgian artillery base near Gori, but not inside the town itself.

What Russia says.

So Georgia: There's a large force going to the capital, destroying Gori.
Gori journalists: No russians tanks, but earlier ``some russian tanks``.
Russia: Outside Gori in an abandoned Georgian artillery base.

Let's all take a step back here and think. It's going to take more than 60 or 70 pieces of mobile armor to capture Tbilisi. The fact that Gori has been entered is certainly not a good thing, however we don't know all the details yet. If Russia was planning to completely subdue and occupy the country or depose the president, we'd know it because there would be enormous numbers of forces moving. Russia hasn't fielded that kind of force yet - at least not that's been reported. Let's take a deep breath and gain some objectivity.

I know it's shocking and, in a sad, sickening way, even exciting to some, but we don't have all of the facts just yet. I'm hoping for the best, personally.

Even the NATO meeting requested by the U.S. likely won't happen until early next week according to this article:

BRUSSELS, Aug 13 (Reuters) - The United States has requested a meeting of NATO foreign ministers over the situation in Georgia, which could take place possibly early next week, an alliance spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

"The U.S. has formally requested a meeting of NATO foreign ministers and we are consulting with allies on the possiblity of having such a meeting early next week," Carmen Romero told reporters.

Almost all European capitals are easy to defend and hard to attack, that was the result of many centuries of war.
