I think that was a journalist from "The Independent", that was the news piece I had posted before, they will probably repeat it when they start another news block in 20 minutes from the time of this post.

Just to add some credibility to the report, the BBC has been reporting for some time that Georgian Soldiers have been "ethnically cleansing" South Ossetia since their invasion. They also have men on the ground, the BBC.

Here is a link to a BBC page on the conflict and to the side are seperate links to different stories, pictures and videos.

It's no coincidence that the refugees all seem to be fleeing into Russia, not Georgia. That's a telling sign.

sorry i just got it from the nytimes. its a western paper so i guess i should have considered it would be pro georgian. it does seem though that they might be going after the georgian president ...and i dont blame them, but that could get the US involved. we wouldnt stand for having one of our puppets dethroned.

An Australian journalist from the ABC just visited Gori and verified the city looks calm and there is minimal damage. He said while he was there he heard explosions in the distance, probably from Russian air raids.

His part starts about 3 minutes from the end - there's some interesting interviews in the audio.

There was a live Sky News report earlier on, showing extensive damage to parts of the city. Presumably it's OK in some places and worse in others.

TBILISI, Georgia - Swarms of Russian jets launched new raids on Georgian territory Monday and Georgia faced the threat of a second front of fighting as Russia demanded that Georgia disarm troops near the breakaway province of Abkhazia.

While a senior Russian general insisted that Russia has no plans to press further into Georgian territory — its troops are now in two breakaway provinces — the order to disarm carried the threat that Russian-sponsored fighting would spread.

End C&P

Looks like night time fighting has begun there.

*wakes up after eight hours or so*

*reads everything he missed and checks news links*

So the news overnight (by overnight, I mean night time in the Pacifc time zone where I am on the U.S. west coast) seems to be, in a nut shell:

  • French and other envoys are pushing for a cease fire
  • Georgia, according to Russian sources, is again shelling South Ossetia, or they were earlier
  • Russia, according to Georgian sources, has amassed further troops in Abkhazia near the border with Georgia
  • Georgia refuses to disarm its forces near the Abkhazi border, despite a Russian ultimatum
  • Russia still has not invaded Georgian territory itself, although sporadic air strikes do continue
  • Tensions between Ukraine and Russia are rising slightly due to Ukrainian support for Georgia
  • The U.S. has begun flying the 2,000 Georgian troops from Iraq into the conflict zone
  • Both sides are employing a lot of public relations tools in attempt to make themselves seem righteous to the world watching the conflict

Is that about right?

Reports in the Kremlin today are stating that Prime Minister Putin has ordered the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation to put the Volga-Urals Military District and Black Sea Fleet on ‘full war alert’ to prepare for the defense of the Iranian Nation against what is being termed as an ‘imminent attack’ being planned by the Western Powers.

Also also ordered was the destruction of all oil pipelines going through Georgia to the West.
