NEWS UPDATE:

Stream of fresh news is coming in. It looks like it is going to get worse before it gets better.

CNN reports Russian air strikes against the Georgian Black Sea port of Poti. Targets of the strikes are yet unkown. The port is now a major military and economic hub, and Russians could have been targeting one of several things. It could be just a strike against Georgian military formations, although I would assume there isn't much there as Georgia has dispatched everything to the North. It is likely the economic infrastructure involving the Caspial pipeline (which is an extremely important geopolitical tool for Georgia). This will cause major U.S. tensions with Russia, and worsening foreign relations. But I wouldn't run for the bomb shelter yelling WW3 - no need to turn a crisis into a cataclysm. There is enough misinformation as it is.

Tbilisi's government building are indeed evacuated, but so far no concrete confirmation of any air strikes there. I wasn't able to get a hold of my friend in Tbilisi. Martial Law may have been declared already. I am hoping communication lines aren't cut by the Georgians.

RIA News reports that Russia is starting to carry out a large scale operation in South Ossetia. Russian army death toll is up to 15. Major movement is reported by Russian divisions in North Ossetia. An unconfirmed report states that Russia may close off entry into the conflict zone from Russia (to prevent North Ossetian volunteers from entering the war zone I suppose). However refugees are still free to enter from South Ossetia.

Tskhinvali is still unable to be evacuated, and for unknown reasons Russian troops still haven't reached the city. Georgia reports that its forces are again occupying the city - hinting at a counterattack to the Russian counterattack. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of back and forth movements with retreats followed by counter attacks in the coming days. At least untill Russia can channel more troops towards Tskhinvali. Electricity and communication lines to the city are completely cut. Journalists cannot get through to find out exactly what is happening.

Civilians in the city are still hiding in shelters. There is no chance to help the wounded and dieing in the streets. South Ossetian government reports that Georgia has just started to shell the city again.

South Ossetian government has held a first meeting after reorganizing. Besides issuing blame for Georgia and calling for international support and all that fun stuff, they have discussed declaring outright independence. I predict Russia will pressure them against this - since it could reinvigorate Georgia's efforts.

South Ossetian fighters are now entranched in defensive positions, and most regions are seeing renewed engagement taking place at these positions. Again this hints at Georgia's renewed attack after innitial retreat.

Civilians are reportedly arming themselves and engaging Georgian troops in several villages.

Destroyed Georgian BMPs with soldiers' bodies scattered around them have been spotted South of Tskhinvali.

This will not end soon. However Georgian army must be running low on manpower now, and much of it appears to be scattered around Tskhinvali and largely unorganized. It will not be able to wage war for long without national mobilization. This will cause public unrest in Georgia no doubt, as few want to fight Saakashvilli's war.
With the Russian air force hitting the port watch and see how the Georgian targets have connections to the shipping of natural gas and crude oil Russia is gonna cripple the pipeline to europe.

PS: it's what I wolud do if I was fighting an NWO client state...

A Russian Defence Minister has said Russia will "bomb Georgia into peace." Volunteers and troops have moved into Abkhazia as well.

Georgia's other breakaway republic, Abkhazia, says Georgia is building up military forces on its border. Earlier, the republic's president, Sergey Bagapsh, said he was ready to help South Ossetia.

With all due respect, Maloy, I think you are one of the most intelligent members of this forum and have proven to be very knowledgeable when it comes to matters related to Russia, but I don't think you are denying ignorance here.

In addition, I think you are far from objective. From previous threads it seems that you have close ties to Russia, explaining why you are not objective.

In a very clever way you avoid what Russia has said and done to Georgia as a direct result of turning to west rather than obeying Russia. Russia cannot stand Georgia's pro western policy and is greatly annoyed by that. Gradually but quickly loses power over former sattelite states.

Georgia has been bullied long enough by Russia that a situation like this could not stay out. Georgia has walked into Russia's trap with open eyes.

Now its time for Russia to show the world they are a world power that should be played around with. Russia has difficulties accepting it's currently no superpower anymore and sees its power fading without being able to answer apart from cutting off the oil/gas tab. (Bear that Im not saying that Russia has no potential to become a superpower within decades).

Russia is very hypocritical as they have crushed independence figters in Chechnya multiple times and now they support (what they define as terrorists) in Georgia.

Nah, The Russians did a superb job . Efficient , precise . Not overblown with lying rhetoric like the USA . They move in , columns of T80's spouting exhaust in a slow relentless drive to the Ossetian capital without a regard for the hipocritical bleats of the usa. Then they do their job, Georgians fleeing with their tails between their legs . None of that lost trillions in getting the job done, none of that pretending Georgia hit them with anthrax .

I wonder, if Russia is the bad guy then why are the civilians from S.O. running to Russia to save their lives?

Oh geeze, I dont know:

-------------Georgia---------Russia
Population--4.6 million-----140 million
Army-------18,000----------1,037,000
Tanks------128--------------23,000
Fighter jets--9---------------1,736

This is quite possibly the most ignorant reply in the entire thread.

What does size of military and population have to do with it?

The S.O.'s are running to Russia because

1. most of them have Russian citizenships/passports and consider themselves Russians by now just like North Ossetia is a Russian territory.
2. they are after all a 'separatist' republic that wants to secede from Georgia so naturally they sure as hell wouldn't run back to the place they hate and are trying to secede from now would they.

Well at the moment , all they are saying is that Georgians positions used to attack SO are 'not safe'. Wether that means just military staging posts or wether it means where the political decisions were made .. not made clear yet . But the capital is all quiet now in terms of fighting , it's rescuing people from the rubble at the moment.

Updated .

Georgians are back shelling the city . Russians have some heavy looking helicopters ( black/white camoflage) flying over the city, prob out to find the artillary units. Lots of dead bodies in the rubble . Russian tanks on the steets , not many civilians moving around . Lots of russian troops . Reports of georgian snipers outside of the city shooting civilians on the outskirts as they go for water . They said earlier the water / power supplies were down, must be a river they were going to ?

Russian troops firing on a building , just a short clip, but whoever was in that building is with the good lord jesus or allah right now , probably a sniper.

Shelling hitting residential areas . Martial law in Georgia for 15 days by parliament decree . Russians moving mobile hospital units to the area .

Still many under the rubble . I suppose they have had to abandon much of the rescue due to the the shelling .

Some intensive missile firing going off from the helicopters .

Showing some of the refugees in north ossetia , camps are being built for them . I think the north ossetians will take care of these people thou, close ethnic ties .

Russians sending transport planes with food and medicine from moscow . Short clip, Bush on the TV saying Russia must stop hostilities .

Russians very unhappy with the western media , woman found trapped under rubble, dead son 20 years old with her in basement .

I don't know if this has been posted yet but an exiled Georgian Billionaire has been found dead at his UK mansion.

The Police are treating it as suspicious in the same vein as Yushchenko who was poisoned by the Russian's.

His body is undergoing an autopsy & toxicology tests.

maloy, one thing is bugging me.

Georgia is a thorn in the eye of russia since they confirmed that the USA is allowed to place the Missle Protection System on there soil. Russia said all the time they will not allow such action. Now this conflict may came in the perfect moment to get into Georgia and wipe there government out. Re-instate a russian government and USA has 1 country less to place there Missle Protection System.

Btw, I have intel sources and they confirmed that Russian Groundforces are on Georgia soil and advancing to the capitol city of Georgia. This is in military terms, a invasion.

Georgia have officially signed a declaration of war;

JAVA, Georgia (AFP) - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili declared a "state of war" on Saturday as his troops battled it out with Russian forces over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.

Russian warplanes bombed and virtually destroyed a key Georgian port and hit another city as the administration in South Ossetia, which is backed by Moscow, said 1,600 people had lost their lives in the capital Tskhinvali alone.

"I have signed a decree on a state of war. Georgia is in a state of total military aggression," Saakashvili told a televised meeting of his national security council.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

AFP: Georgia declare "state of war"

NATO have officially stated it will not be getting involved or give support. So, if Georgia was hoping on foreign support - that idea is categorically dead.

Georgia wants a cease-fire (no word if Russia have accepted) and have accused Russia of a full-scale invasion of Georgia.

Russia has bombed Georgian forces in Abkhazia.

Reports of a new front has opened in Abkhazia, Georgia has called for international help but NATO and EU have ruled out support.

Georgia could also call up Chechan rebels and tell them to intensify their attacks in Chechnya deviding the Russian attention.

But they gota bribe em with good weps though.

for starters, the op's picture is a relic of an era of oppression longing to return to the arena, this shows a huge bias. Russia wants to regain it's former glory and is doing anything to achieve it. It crushed freedom fighters in Chechnya, and now they're bombing outside of S. Ossetia, what's the reason to bomb outside the actual combat zone?? Russia's simply pissed off because we're propping up our missile shield in their former states and is trying to set an example for its former satellites.
Also, Georgia's been pushing for NATO membership, Russia doesn't want that and naturally, like a cornered dog, it's lashing out. Cowards.

I may be wrong , but when you fire off artillary shells at a city , you sort of have to be outside of it by a certain distance . Something to do with the laws of projectiles trajection Newton and gravity .

If they are bombing stuff not close to the city , it's just to stop them bringing up reinforcements to cause further damage , nothing wrong with that , is there ? You know .. pre-emptive measures, you know all about that . If you fight them there , you don't have to fight them here etc . Where have you been all this time, you don't know the script by now ?

Good I'm glad he's dead. Such a tiny and poor country shouldn't have billionaires. The guy probably had more money than the entire GDP of the country if he's a billionaire. But instead of helping his country out in some way he lives in a posh estate/mansion in LONDON??? I'm glad the KGB got him.

Where the heck did you get this information because this would be HUGE and would be the #1 news story in the world of the past 6 months if it were true that Russia had ground forces attempting to sack the capital city of Georgia. What is your "intel" source???????????????
