What about people making 20/hr in other industries or even in fast food industries?

Are they going to get raises also?

If a burger flipper gets 20$ an hour for that job, then all the others who are better educated and better employed deserve raises for doing jobs that require a higher education and/or more mental power. Otherwise, it's not fair. So yeah ... you bring up a very good point. The 30$ an hour starting engineer now deserves $40 an hour for his or her job. Etc etc

Good, it should be at LEAST $20 hour - for all industries - at the National level.

So you have never lived anywhere other than the big city?

20 an hour national min wage would destroy the vast majority of small business owners every where else across the nation.

What they're going to find in California is a continuation of the upwardly cost spiral.

The same thing that American auto makers are about to do. destroying their Auto sales by giving workers a 40% increase in wages and more lucrative benefit packages.

Detroit all over

Instead of hiring 10 people at 15/hr, Newsome will now own higher unemployment when companies fire 3 people to make up for it.
Plus the remaining worker will have triple the workload.

That's not a terribly large increase. Already 16.00+ in most locations. Some already 18+. And still, they have trouble getting non-mexicans to want to make that. Still hard to live above poverty (alone) on that. At almost every drive-thru, English is a second language for this reason.

* Closer to the border a good percentage actually live in Mexico and use SENTRI passes or wait a few hours every day to cross.

Everything is more here anyway. The Big Mac meal is already $11.99, bundles from $22. Locations in wealthier neighborhoods cost more.

The $20/hour will get you by with roommates or single occupancy. Average income is 73k. That may get you to a home down payment in Hemet. Which puts you between bikers and a meth lab.

Meh, it can go with the $7.00/gallon gas.

Pay higher, costs are higher. All in all, this is the quality of life equivalent of someone in a federal min wage state of 7.25/hour going to $8.75.

So in the state of California whom many families are already struggling and many kids working these jobs put some money back into the family are expected to save for a vehicle are now expected to not help their family and save either for schooling or a vehicle on less pay?

Irrelevant and off point.

Did ya thing that comment through or just decide to jump on the bandwagon being thrown around here?

Unlike you, yes, yes I did.

this line of thought completely ignores the reason the issue is even being discussed at all.

People need the increase in min. wage because of corporate greed, why isn't there a limit on that?

You really think the CEO is gonna take a pay cut? or that the institutional investors will take a loss? your clearly not thinking straight. Wages have been going up, just not at the federal level, but nearly every state has a higher min, wage than the fed. rate.
and product prices keep going up.
That's also why I refuse to use self-checkout. I'm not working for free doing a cashiers job , while I'm paying more than ever for the same groceries

Here is something that makes even more sense:

A hamburger has a limited value. If you cannot sell that hamburger for what it costs in LABOR to produce that hamburger, what will you do to keep your business open?

Think hard, come back and answer what you would do as a hamburger seller when people stop buying your overpriced hamburgers.

Your talking about a a few different industries here.
If they want to continue to stay competitive and maintain a workforce then they stay competitive in all markets.
Who in their right mind would work for less just so the consumer can get a cheap burger???
Pretty stupid question.
The producers of said beef are going to sell that beef no matter where it goes, and unless it's a mom and pop shop that actually owns the processing facility won't see any gains.
So the processing facilities don't really care as most already have contracts in place and can negotiate at a later time.
Get it now?

No I don't I don't think you get what I meant.
If you want a true free market society and understand economics then you would get what I'm talking about.

That argument goes out the window with automated workload being utilized.
You clearly have no understanding of the current economic structure in today's society.

Yea, imagine getting just under $200.00 per day for a shift when just a few years ago people were getting $64.00 or so for the same thing.

Let me explain my point of view here.
If a Joe only puts in what I as the employer feels like the work is only worth $1 an hour for Joe then he will get that.
But his friend John puts in what I feel like is worth $18 an hour then I will pay that.
That system if implemented would drive a very strong work force and drive the others out. At first the system would be difficult for the world economy but in the end would lead to one freaking strong economy.

I don't mean to offend I just want to express my personal feelings about minimum wage and why I think it's stupid. But since we have one I do understand this action.

Fast food places in many other countries pay more than 20/hr and they’re doing just fine. They barely had to increase prices to cover the cost. a reply to: FlyersFan

Are you guys serious? $20 x 40hrs = $800.
$800 x 52 weeks = $41,600 per year, before tax.

You guys make it sound like its a lot. It’s really not. What do you want them to make $7.50 an hour? Do you want them on welfare?

Not supposed to be a main job.

It is a supplement job.

Skill dictates pay at different levels.

Fast food has a ton of people who can do the job

Electrician. Less Cana do it

Plumber. Less can do it

Machinist, nurse, doctor and so on.

Jobs that can call in large sections of the popular because of the low skill requires do not pay as much.

That is how it works and how it will always work.

People will stop going to fats food chains now.

If you think about it Sure he's giving fast food workers a raise but look at the big picture here . He's giving California a raise .......

"If you make $41,000 a year living in the region of California, USA, you will be taxed $7,780. That means that your net pay will be $33,220 per year, or $2,768 per month. Your average tax rate is 19.0% and your marginal tax rate is 27.4%. This marginal tax rate means that your immediate additional income will be taxed at this rate. For instance, an increase of $100 in your salary will be taxed $27.35, hence, your net pay will only increase by $72.65."

I bet all the kids who might have had a little motivation to get a job, will find it hard to compete against adults. And the cost of fast food will increase, which as has been said, is likely a good thing for the consumer. Less adults gobbling up the rat burgers.

I think this has been true for awhile.

More and more adults working fast food.

See -- we can agree on something
