seeing as how the part time cashiers/shoppers are the lowest paid group they hire I think your comments are unfounded.
Order pickers in their warehouses start at about 18 an hour, again part time, at least the warehouse workers can eventually get full time status which gives them raises but they have to earn it.

Walmart paid 4.7 billion in taxes in 2022, that's a far cry from anything the common taxpayer didn't get back in tax returns.
The common taxpayer couldn't subsidize a wet fart
The only reason a person gets hired in fast food is because they need a body to subsidize the labor output already in place.
These places don't hire burger flippers in hopes that they will attract new customers or come up with new products.
They are not entitled to anything other than the labor agreement they sign when they are hired.

You’ve been brainwashed to hate your fellow worker, you act like giving your peers a raise would be a bad thing? Don’t you deserve it if you have “made the right life choices”? Inflation is caused by corporate greed, a desire to chase ever increasing profits, nothing more.

Oh you're a special case aren't you .

Inflation is caused by one thing mate and that is the Government Printing more money .

and how is it a Pay raise if literally everyone is making the same $20 an hour ?

Honestly IMHO I would do away with the minimum wage.

1cent/hour here we come

Let me explain my point of view here.
If a Joe only puts in what I as the employer feels like the work is only worth $1 an hour for Joe then he will get that.
But his friend John puts in what I feel like is worth $18 an hour then I will pay that.
That system if implemented would drive a very strong work force and drive the others out. At first the system would be difficult for the world economy but in the end would lead to one freaking strong economy.

I don't mean to offend I just want to express my personal feelings about minimum wage and why I think it's stupid. But since we have one I do understand this action.
Maybe , you have a point. I do think setting the minimum at 20/hour is stupid and will destroy the fast food industry, as nobody can afford to eat there anymore. The fastfood franchises are not going to eat those higher wages cost, but will pass it onto the consumer.

I almost never eat fast food, maybe once a month when my son wants it. Last time it was about $18 for 2 small combo meals. I can make that at home for $2.

Fast food places in many other countries pay more than 20/hr and they’re doing just fine. They barely had to increase prices to cover the cost

Do they ?

Tell us about the Income Taxes in these Socialist Nations you're talking about ...

How much do they Tax that Big ol $20 an hour ?

so i did exactly that, i googled it and this was the first result

Walmart and McDonald’s have the most workers on food stamps and Medicaid, new study shows

ironic?

so 14,500 employees out of a total of 1.5 million, seems like you might not want me to search any more stuff on google

A lot of misunderstandings here. Wage increases are nothing new.

Been here since minimum wage was $8 and a studio on the beach was $750/month.

In a little under 15 years wages have more than doubled.
Gas has doubled.
Rent has doubled.
Everything has doubled.

They raise the wages, and the prices go up. There is a month or two of slightly slower business, and then it returns.

Not many save anything... and it is a lateral move.

But for the lowest income this is beautiful.

California is State Rights Socialist. Not really debatable. We have higher taxes in place of a Value Added Tax.

We have a comprehensive socialized healthcare program, and well funded assistance programs, like EBT and rental assistance.

So Burger flipper making 20 dollars an hour is still under 48.5k a year, which (for 1 person) qualifies as "Very Low Income". That burger flipper, making 40k and taxed 25%, also qualifies for food stamps, 100% MediCal, and also qualification for reduced rent up to 35% below market rate (if available). It's easier in lower classes than middle classes, honestly. If you don't ever want to own anything.

It really works itself out in the end. Every incremental wage increase, totalling 8 to 12 dollars depending on city since 2008, levels out.

This state is kinda autonomous. Our $20 minimum wage for fast food won't really hurt us, or anyone else directly.

We're freaking 'State Rights Socialist', after all. Might as well be a foreign country under the Nordic model.

a reply to: datguy Why are you ok with subsidizing the wages of over 14,000 employees that generate massive profits for walmart and mcdonalds? You only reinforce my points.

Sure because they tax your brains out to the point that you can't afford anything but what they provide for you

Really surprises me that so many in theory adults think that flipping burgers should be a job you can raise a family on.

When I was a kid burger flippers were for kids, and it was meant to be low pay not a fun time so the company made X profit and kids would be incentivized to make get educated and make more money.

Honestly it scares me a bit that so many adults work at these places, that tells me one of two things has happened, the economy is way worse than the worst pessimist believes, or the dumbing down of Americans is a lot further along the spectrum than we thought, nobody should feel content as a burger flipper. (obviously if you started as a burger flipper and are running the joint your mileage will vary)

2 reasons
1) those 14000 people need the help,
You go out of your way to demonstrate the perceived evils of the corporations greed, yet you want to hold these people accountable for being used by the same corporations.
2) As I said earlier, the common taxpayer doesn't subsidize anything, These corporations everyone thinks don't pay taxes, are the ones who are doing the subsidizing. End the return of taxes, until then your gonna have a hard time convincing me otherwise.
ill even give you a third reason...
14k is what percent of the total 1.5 million employed? less than 1%?
what you should be upset about in regards to taxpayer fund is the actual subsidies that Walmart receives from taxpayers.

Walmart receives an estimated $6.2 billion annually in mostly federal taxpayer subsidies

americansfortaxfairness.org...

but now were drifting off topic

Edit :
a fourth reason...
you seem to be disillusioned by the idea that these employees somehow generate and are solely responsible for all this profit. This is simply not true

Inflation? Probably part of it. IT'S BIDENS FAULT! BIDEN TOOK MY COST OF LIVING! Can I say that?

Rent goes up first, usually concurrent with commodities. Then they raise the wages to catch up, then the burgers go up 1$. And people spend 5-10$ more per visit.

Every fast food meal is 15+ anyway, so what's another 5?

I haven't noticed things getting harder. Every time milk or rent goes up, my wages follow soon after.

The mentality is, "Fund the 401k or retirement account (if applicable), and then have fun, because you're really not accruing other savings anyway, and life is short."

We're just 'millenial party kids' with more pets than children, and we live like 22 year olds through our 40s. Today was Sunday Funday, which for those not working, may include bottomless mimosas by 10 AM.

And if you split rent right you can have 1-2k a month to blow on bars, ballgames, and concerts. Casino trips too. Fun things. Screw savings.

My building is filled with bartenders, waitresses, an abnormal number of flight attendants, Navy, administrative office crap, more than a few business degrees, paralegals, and tourism/hospitality/food service employees, mostly chefs and high end kitchen workers. Several are gig workers on the side. Not many children at all.

Almost all are either a working couple or have roommates. There were two crypto millionaire 20 year olds in the Penthouse for a while... I think something happened to them though...

Two roommates making 4500 each can rent a 2 bedroom for 2500-4500, depending on area. Crap goes up, you rent out the couch. It generally keeps up with itself.

A full time bartender here makes about 1400/week (about 280 a shift). Get the right gig, it's 2500+. Two can share a lease and a rent a nice 2 bedroom for 4200. Less than half the income of the roommates, but they get to live in California and blow a collective 3k a month.

Hell, an Uber Black driver pulling 800-1200 a day can make a quarter million if they really commit.

It's crazy, none of the people paying the rents and prices really bitch, almost like a badge of honor that we can afford it actually. We are taxed. Pay more for everything. And only 35% of us care, and it's usually the middle to upper class on the right that do the most complaining.

It's for the most part, a Peter Pan State among the young renters in the Coastal areas. I can't speak for the San Joaquin Valley though. Fresno and Bakersfield are a different cost of living and mindset.

The difference of values can be a culture shock, which is why it's worth explaining in detail.

That's not a terribly large increase. Already 16.00+ in most locations. Some already 18+.

It may be different away from major urban areas.

Are you guys serious? $20 x 40hrs = $800.
$800 x 52 weeks = $41,600 per year, before tax.

You guys make it sound like its a lot. It’s really not. What do you want them to make $7.50 an hour? Do you want them on welfare?

Maybe they should instead tackle the reasons WHY rent is $3,600 a month and they have limited housing while letting in hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants with no place to live, forcing the rent even higher. And with high gasoline prices, utility and food prices, quite frankly, $20 is NOT enough. But places can only take so much.

The bill that was signed:

The new law would raise base wages for so-called quick-serve restaurants with 60 locations or more to at least $20 an hour and create a restaurant industry council that would set future pay raises and advise on working conditions.

But this forces small mom n pops to raise their wages also. They are the ones that will be really hurting. At the end of the day, it's what the market will bear and sometimes takes a while to see how everything will pan out. When Seattle raised their hourly rate to $15/hr, people including myself were saying the same thing about all the business that would go bust but that didn't come to fruition thank goodness. This may be the same. But then again, it was just the Seattle area and not the whole state.
