I'm not buying the Spy balloon thing If they wanted intel there are way betters and more advanced ways used not a balloon .

Either it was a real weather balloon or it was dispersing some kind of biological agent .

Agreed and that may have been a fear of the military in hindsight that the balloon had some sort of Bio agent on board .

But no it was not some Intel Gathering device no way that makes no sense at all , it could have been some sort of Psych-Op too see how the American people would react to a UFO literally witnessed by everyone .

Who knows truly all I know for sure is what ever they say it is , it's not that.

Personally, I find it highly unlikely that the Chinese would be presenting any free tech gifts via what is nothing less than a flashing neon sitting duck. What is their other hand doing while all eyes are on the pretty balloon?

Yeah, I thought that too; "there is no way China is that stupid", but I think it's a couple of things.
There's a sleight of hand going on, meanwhile intel is trying to make the best of the balloon (as Zaph said).

The balloon is too obvious, I smell propaganda mixed in here somewhere.

And while the eyes are on the skies and hands are wringing over a balloon,

Ohio train derailment causes massive fire, forces village evacuation

Haz Mat consisting of at least Vinyl Chloride is in 20 some tanker cars and at least one is leaking. This happened last night and hardly a peep until this evening. This is in reply to a post earlier in thread wisely asking “what the other hand is doing” while this distracts the news.

The balloon is a big, obvious, clumsy, slow-moving spy platform. It's so obvious and visible it's like a joke. That said, I don't believe there was any kind of biological agent on board. Radar etc yes, though.

This is more than likely a power move by China. They have spy satellites. The excuses aren't great for balloon use, either. time.com...

The whole stunt reeks of propaganda. Still, intelligence needs to analyze the balloon, its payload, etc. Might as well.

Hi there. Yes, might well be. But what if it WAS a ufo...Haha -- along those lines I would not be surprised if same object is spotted a week later over the atlantic on it's projected course. This would be hilarious, imo.

Now that a "Chinese spy balloon" has been shot down over US waters, and the Navy has debris recovery efforts underway, I must admit I was confused, and concerned by China's original description of the vehicle in question as an "Airship".

This confusion was to an extent, compounded, by the US military stating that the "balloon" was "maneuverable".

Balloons are not, typically, maneuverable...beyond up and down.

My thoughts went to something more like this:

www.scmp.com...

encroaching upon our skies.

For a number of reasons (maybe some them rational?) I still have my doubts that this "molehill" isn't, in fact, hiding a much larger "mountain".

Guess it's just a matter of perspective.

What if it contains a biological weapon along with whatever payload it carrying? A deadly virus unlike Covid? That would certainly prevent the US from shooting it down.

Crappos, does this mean that China will target the Snoopy Balloon at the Macy's Day Parade?

When negotiations were not going well with the Taliban and Iran was posturing a president killed their #1 Military Leader in another country. Done. Not a peep.

Here, we had to wait on something that we should have been able to hack into once it was over our airspace. I really do not think it would have been too difficult. Just ask Musk to move some satellites or use our own.
Seriously, If we are so technologically advanced what would we learn from a spy balloon. We just allowed a foreign aircraft to fly through our airspace knowing it was spying. Take that in...slowly.

The Montana video reminds me of flight 587. We can all see something else happened other than wind shear but the story gets washed. There was an explosion on that flight and it came down. It will not be talked about again and few will bring it up but they will know more about the one over Latin America.

There is so much more to this and...how many are really out there?

What is the incentive for China starting a war with the USA? They already pretty much own this country right now. What more could they want that money can't buy them?

After the spy mission was completed, Xi told Biden to destroy it.

Puppet obeyed.

Much more going on..in addition to the balloon loyalty test.

Its treason.

Still zero reason to allow it to cross our airspace undisturbed .

I agree. I was just pointing out that there is a legitimate reason to retrieve and study the payload. The military didn't want it destroyed until they could learn more about it.

If we know what China is looking for we also know what China doesn't know. That's important.

There could have been a concern about the payload carrying an impact-triggered explosive. Such a device would not be readily apparent from video/electromagnetic observation. Since they shot it down as soon as it got over the Atlantic, that's my best bet. It's also in a location now where any released material in the atmosphere would float over ocean instead of over potentially populated areas.

That actually bothers me. If that is the reasoning (either a large impact explosive or atmospheric release), that means that the military expects such from China. That means such a tactic is quite possible in the future. Also, the fact that China has now flown one balloon over the mainland USA means they likely have a better idea of how the prevailing winds run, and that means another balloon could have much greater accuracy than this one. Those prevailing wind patterns are actually of national security.

Oh, and you told Zaph that you thought it was some sort of "analog remote device"... no, it wasn't. It was an unguided missile, aimed visually. Just a big bullet from a bigger rifle, essentially. Analog is not used for remote applications... too unreliable.

Kinda like this plane's body is being illuminated by the full moon and it's own lights, right?

Yeah, that's about right.

None. And no one will say “oops, I got it wrong, China is bio attacking or EMPing the US, their biggest customer”

Hubris, hyperbole. And when other people post a news article for discussion, it’s the same people who will go in their ridiculing then for even talking about it.

Not no shame in just going in and throwing sh** at the wall even if it doesn’t stick only to memory while it when it’s over and they were clearly off base. Rinse and repeat.
