Hint: You can leave your frozen lasagna on the patio when in the single digits!!

Oh, cooking a frozen lasagna for an hour, then letting it sit on the stove to cool for half an hour will make you hungry but help keep your house warm!!

Nothing like a belly full of baked noodles and a warm blanket when the weather is raging outside!!

Merry Solstice!!

Evidently part of that culture is to put your trash out to the curb in the middle of a blizzard.

Trash company sent out 'Sorry, no Friday pick-ups' alerts, and folks put their trash out anyway.

I'm starting to suspect some of my neighbors aren't the sharpest tools in the shed

I had some drinks in the garage and had to bring them in as they were freezing. You know it’s cold when that happens.
My pesty dog isn’t begging to go outside either.
The extension cord for my Xmas lights feels completely stiff and frozen.

I heard trash guys here get 20-30k in bonuses just from customers. I believe it, Most of my friends and neighbors give at least 100 each Xmas.
I do too, they work very hard and our trash guys are very nice.

I never even thought to do that. I usually get mad after I clear my driveway and they come thru. I'll do it next time.

We had 3 consecutive snow storms of over 12 inches each (something like 20 inches in the first one). We have waist high snow plowed off 75% of the sidewalks now. We were all post holing around for a week or so!

And yeah, the cat looked at me to go outside, looked outside, and sat down!!

The pets know better than I do to go outside in weather like that!!

Stay warm!!

Well, thank you Michigan... let us return the favor this coming August. How's 110°F for a week with 95% humidity grab ya?

Well, it's 2:30 in the AM here... I'm watching the temps tonight.

So far we had well enough rain to wet the roadways and grass, with a little light snow on top. IO don't think there was enough to stick. The big story is the temperature. It was hovering just below 50°F all day and was still at 47°F at 11:00 PM. Then it started dropping, somewhere in the vicinity of 5°-10°F per hour. Now it's sitting at 20.5°F and the rate has slowed.

My house is freeze-resistant down to 20°F; after that we have to let the faucets run. They're running.

So far the chickens are fine. We set up two of the parabolic heat lamps we use for chicks on the porch. They have 60W incandescent bulbs in them, and that seems to be helping. No idea where the ducks are, but that's normal at night; they have a few areas they like to hide in for the night. No sign of the cats. They were in the little makeshift shelter we put together earlier, so I assume they're still in there with the dog.

The one big difference seems to be the deer. They are out in force, probably looking for food. The dog has been alerting all night long in different directions where we have seen deer previously, so I'm sure that's what it is.

Nastyville (aka Nashville) was having almost blizzard conditions earlier. Didn't last long, though.

So far we have power. Some cities west of me have lost power to small areas, but ours seems to be holding. The heat pump is struggling, but maintaining a nice comfy 74°F inside. No road closings I have heard of yet, but my kids called and postponed Christmas here tomorrow/today (Friday), and I agreed... their safety is paramount. They're going to take a look in the morning light to verify, but I'm pretty sure it will be postponed.

It's damn cold and getting colder, with 4 1/2 hours to go before sunshine. It might make it to single digits, but it's going to be close unless it changes. Damn, I hate winter! Once this snap gets through, though, next week will warm back into the upper 50s for highs.

You can have a fall, no problem. We'll just drop those temps back to 90 for a couple months. You're welcome.

I wish that were true.

I hate and I mean DESPISE winter.

If it weren't for family and friends, I'd be in a much warmer climate.

It's 12 hours since my last post, 4.35 a.m. in the morning. We got less than an inch of snow here in Southern Illinois, but the thermometer keeps dropping. From 50 degrees F around noon yesterday to -5 degrees now. That's a 55 degree drop in like 16 hours. At least the wind has finally slacked off from it's 40 mph gusts. It's hardly blowing now.

It's so cold (how cold is it!?) it's so cold that it froze the wind. And your mama. (Performs a mock golf swing.)

Battreys really don't like cold temps.

Leave us out of your gift, please. Southern Illinois sided with the South during the Civil War. We even had our own slaves and all, though we were not a slave state. They kept and employed slaves here at Mr. John Hart Crenshaw's mansion on the hill, known as "The Old Slave House" and built in 1838, and it's located only about 25 miles from my house. Here's a picture of the place I took in 1984:

Another interesting fact: When Abraham Lincoln was stumping for William Henry Harrison for President during 1840, John Crenshaw held a dance at the Old Slave House in honor of Honest Abe. At that dance, Lincoln danced with my Great Great Great Great (I lost count of the "Greats") Grandmother.

You can see her picture in this book - "Slaves, Salt, Sex And Mr. Crenshaw."

Same temperature here in Southern Illinois, too.

"Batterys really don't like cold temps." Tell me about it. That's why I use my old manual film cameras in situations like these. They work without batteries. My new-fangled digital slrs freeze up out in weather like this.

6:30 AM in Southwest Michigan. 3 F with a -18 windchill but thinks it's much windier because of the lake Zoom Earth says 25 MPH on the lake only 330 people without power so far. Pretty much a whiteout. I think about 5" of snow but who really knows

Almost 7:00 AM here. Temp is 10°F. Dog has been quiet for a while and the cats are nowhere to be found; I think they're all snuggled up together. The chickens apparently all survived; most are off the porch and all are moving. I haven't seen the ducks yet.

We still have water and power. No real idea how bad the roads are; I haven't heard a single vehicle yet, but most places were already closed for today. The local news is reporting slick spots and a few scattered flurries, which is an upgrade from the last three days when they were calling for 100% chance of black ice. I don't know of any road closings yet.

There is no snow, not even enough to call a dusting.

Redneck is waiting on the sun.
