I've heard a lot of good advice from the media regarding this storm. I'll admit I didn't read every post of this thread.

Have gas for your generator in case of power outtage, have a few days of food and water if you get snowed in, don't make any unneccesary travel, if you are traveling, expect delays. So on and so forth.

The one thing I haven't heard yet is fill up your gas tank. I remember as a kid when we had sub zero temps to keep your gas tank full.

Is that not a thing anymore with newer cars?

With newer cars, you have to keep them charged and hope the cold doesn't drain your battery too quickly.

Yes, I have a full tank.

Mt. Pleasant, MI here. They are saying 8-17" for our area. I will believe it when I see it. 75% of the time severe weather goes either north or south of us.

Geographic influence? When I was at Fort Bragg, if severe storms were approaching they almost always broke up and split around the base
had to be some HAARP # going on. But really I think it was just some quirk of the local geography that caused it, though I have no idea what quirk that would be.

Probably the terrain. However, you wouldn't be wrong for wondering. I watch weather patterns around my monitors in the field because big storms can destroy my equipment. I see areas that seemingly skim by big ones hitting them a lot and a few miles away often some damage if not a lot. Some neat terrain affect patterns can be seen over time if you look with an eye for that. It is too small for the regional forecasters but I am having to look in smaller areas that are stationary so I get used to the patterns.

Nope, no chicken coop. Ours are true free-range. We have a small coop we raise them in to get them accustomed to "home" and protect them from predators until they get old enough to handle themselves, but it's far too small and getting them back in it would be like pushing a chain. Once our birds get full-grown, we let them out and they do their thing from there.

I've just got to trust that those survival instincts are still there. They've been roosting on the front porch lately, so at least there they're protected from the wind. Not gonna run them off with all this coming in; I'll wash the porch when it's all over.

Right now it's 45.3°F on the porch, in the wee hours. Weird because our forecast for 24 hours from now is supposed to be single digits. High tomorrow: 53°F; high the next day: 17°F. That's screwed up!

At 5.15 a.m., the thermometer outside my kitchen window is sitting right on 50 degrees F. Still no change here, it's pretty mild, with no wind, so I guess it hasn't arrived here in Southern Illinois yet.

Yawn* 3.32 inches expected here in the heartland, 2inch Armageddon happened wow-weee

gg just another political pandering of fear mongering due to "climate change" ya know 4 seasons?

Wake me when we get 2-3 feet like Canada use to get. When ppl panicked like this...(7 alerts in a single day) So what it's a little cold.. where's the bombshell snowstorm?

Starting to think it's more fear mongering lies like covid to drive sales and inflation higher. Y'all hear china estimated death rate is 5k a day?

Lmao, stay home stop the spread, no holiday for you!

Still waiting for that "blizzard" - so far DQ has more to offer.

Such a let down so far was expecting to make huge snowmen and snow angels for Christmas

Well I should be down the road right now, but here I sit behind my keyboard at home.

Hubs briefly took the car out to see what it's like this morning and there are two issues:

1. We are in the worst of the snow currently and coupled with the wind it creates some real visibility issues.

2. It's so cold that my defroster is fighting to keep my windshield unfogged.

Between the two, seeing to drive any distance is bad. I am waiting for an hour or so to let the worst snow pass before I try to attempt getting in to work this morning. I am getting my car kit ready, of course, and the office can kiss my @ss. I am dressing to the weather, not their work space today. They can deal with me in jeans layered over warmth. At least I have office-worthy sweaters I can pile on up top.

But if I get stuck in this, I'm not dying because I'm in think office slacks.

We got a bunch here in Saint Paul. -9 right now with -31 wind chill. Some years ago I had to replace a blower motor in my soft top jeep in -40 weather. Let’s say that it was a reminder that as an artist, Exposure will kill you. We got probably a foot or so over the last two days. I am about to go outside and see if the car starts. Have not driven in about 4 days or so. a reply to: mikell

Now I am still below the Mason Dixon line and I can tell you I have a chicken coop and if I didn't my hens would be raccoon meat, can be decapitated by a possum, hawks and falcons nab them during the day and fricken Owls if they try to live in the trees. You Bama boys must hunt a lot! I don't unless I trap the animals going for my hens. I am capable of shooting my meal but refrain for now. I do eat the summer sausage from the harvest my buds take and some tender back strips.
ETA

I let them out a few days a year and get hammered by hawks and if I forget to shut the pen in the evening the Raccoons and Possums terrorize my girls. This year we had three left added a dozen. Those three are dead and down to 8 pullets just now laying good. Possum definitely got one. A hawk at least one. Raccon, maybe. I let the door open a few days in November so they could forage.

Even when we got shut down for 9 days during 2 back to back winter storms in Feb 2021, we never lost power.

Yeah, that's the way it goes. You kinda want to try out your safety equipment in a real world situation, but not too much, if you know what I mean. I haven't had to light up the candles and hurricane lamps here for about 10-15 years. When my young teenage neighbor saw my house lit up when the rest of the block was black, she came over and admired all my candles. That made me feel good that they were working that well!

I know exactly what you mean. Question.... What kind of candles do you have that provide so much light? I don't get my generator cranked up if we're only going to be without power for a few hours, so I use candles but when I pull the candles out, all I have are the candles my wife purchased from Bed Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, etc., meant for smelling good, not light. I need some meant for light, not a brothel.

Indeed... You get the UFOs and get to see every constellation above you. I'd love to have a small station with a huge telescope built into it out there in the desert. What are the dangerous things out there, scorpions, snakes, and big cats?

Don't forget tarantulas, too. They like to hide in your shoes. Here's an interesting fact: In my "backyard" where I used to live stands Mt. Graham, near Safford. The Vatican has an observatory on the top of it. (Over two miles high.) I've always wondered what they could be looking for....?

Tarantulas hiding in my shoe? Nah, nuh-uh... I just lost my appetite.

That's very intriguing about the Vatican sitting two miles high, hmmm.......

We have all those around here as well, but we also have a dog. A big dog... pit bull. She has a growl that'll send chills up the Devil's own spine! Sweet-tempered dog, just don't be a critter in her yard.

We lost one, not sure to what. The flock wandered up too far in the mountain and something got one; a friend was scouting and found the pile of feathers. Lesson learned, though; they stay closer to the yard now. I eventually want to get some more turkeys... no good for eggs, but they are great protectors and will flock with the chickens.

My biggest concern is coyotes. There are some close enough to hear, but so far they have stayed away from my flock. The dog might have something to do with that... a pit bull is one of the few breeds that can stand toe-to-toe with a pack of coyotes and have a decent chance of winning.

same..im in a semi arid area of South America, do not miss the snow one bit

I was only in snow (when it was snowing) once. Had to put on way too many clothes and shoes.

Says beach kid now living in middle of Sonora Desert. Only issue with desert, besides lack of water, do have to wear shoes.

I do hope everyone stays safe.

Neighbors who choose to ignore the Light Pollution Law makes me dangerous

What does the Light Pollution Law say? I'd definitely be mad if I was out there and couldn't look up and see EVERYTHING in the sky. Stars, space, planets, galaxies, light speed travel, the entire universe has been my obsession since I was 3 or 4 years old.
