Another thing that might be different with this Blizzard……

Less employees to run snow plows!

Thank goodness the guy that runs the snowplow around here goes to my church. It's nice knowing inside people!

Caked layers of ice between snow like that is the worst. I've seen my fair share of winter storms, snow itself is never a bother to me (I enjoy outdoor snow-related activities like snowmobiling, etc), but as soon as the ice starts to pile up like that, it's just a pain.

I'm with you on the ice - don't like it, either. Just give me a lot of good, sticky snow so I can build another igloo. Here's a link to a picture of one I built:

Quinn The Eskimo

Regular snow, when it's not too cold, is fun.

Indeed... You get the UFOs and get to see every constellation above you. I'd love to have a small station with a huge telescope built into it out there in the desert. What are the dangerous things out there, scorpions, snakes, and big cats?

Don't forget tarantulas, too. They like to hide in your shoes. Here's an interesting fact: In my "backyard" where I used to live stands Mt. Graham, near Safford. The Vatican has an observatory on the top of it. (Over two miles high.) I've always wondered what they could be looking for....?

Still saying 20" and the wind for my town.

Great job on the igloo! Now I want it to snow more so I can build one.
I try to build at least one snowman per season. I didn't get one built last year, the snow didn't stick around long enough to be worth it.

Thanks! They're fun to build! When I built that one, the little neighbor girls from across the street came over and wanted to go inside it. So I let them!

I like building snowmen, too. Here's the one I built last year though it didn't stick around for very long:

The Snowman

And here's why it didn't stick around for very long. It warmed up and melted all the snow and four days later I was barbecuing outside in shorts because it was so warm:

Awesome! That must have been so much fun for those kids.

Nice snowman, he looks a lot like the ones I've produced over the years. I always try different hats. Some people like snowman kits but I prefer to forage for the accessories myself, that's part of the fun.

Funny how the weather swings like that sometimes. It did that here last year, it was in the 70s, a few gusts of wind later, poof, a foot of snow. Five or so days later, 65F again. A nice BBQ is a good way to take advantage of that.

same..im in a semi arid area of South America, do not miss the snow one bit

I was only in snow (when it was snowing) once. Had to put on way too many clothes and shoes.

Says beach kid now living in middle of Sonora Desert. Only issue with desert, besides lack of water, do have to wear shoes.

I do hope everyone stays safe.

always watch the weather but real snow storms here came in my parents lifetime, not mine (1960s), but this does seem like the once in a decade or two white winter that'll bring my country to a halt and everyone looking for something to sledge on even if its just a dusting..

I remember snow so deep my parents had to shovel pathways to the car and to the shed.

Pathways that had walls higher than me at the time(3'-4').

I personally used to love the snow that had the hard crust on top.It made for some fast sled rides.

It's been a long time since my area had those kinds of storms. The snow I don't mind, but the high winds can be brutal.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Winds off of Lake Michigan? Now THAT is real cold.

I went to Great Lakes for boot camp from December to February.Being from the N.E.,I thought I was used to the cold.

Boy,was I wrong. The wind coming off the lake would go right through you while waiting to get into Grisham Hall for chow at 0500.

Anyone that lives near the Great Lakes during the winter has my utmost respect.

I’m getting a little concerned.

The schools just sent notice that there is no school tomorrow or Friday. They NEVER close schools here.
Then I heard from a government worker that our electric company is getting ready.
They are obviously expecting electricity to go out. Our internet provider sent a message to be ready for outages.

Those are things that have NEVER happened before. So what is going on? Are they being proactive? Is this storm really that much worse than any other blizzard. Keep in mind we are used to severe winter weather. I remember driving to a basketball game for my daughter in a blizzard, they refused to cancel it.
Is it due to lack of workers and they are trying to mitigate any problems that arise?

Everything says stay off the roads tomorrow, but our office is business as usual.

I am less than enthused.

I cancelled a very important meeting because you know what… it just isn’t worth it.
I don’t want car damage, I don’t want to drive all stressed, I absolutely don’t want to be stranded!

If you do have to drive make sure to have a lighter and a candle, you wouldn’t believe it but it can keep you alive, in addition to all the other emergency stuff a car should have.

Husband will put his foot down. He's going out first to get coffee, and if he doesn't like it, he won't let me go. I won't fight him too much.

I will also watch conditions. If there are a ton of wrecks, I won't take off just to sit bumper to bumper.

The lake is a warm 43 today and that's what makes the lake effect snow. Cold air over warm water. Generally the lake effect is worse a few miles in land because the land is cold, but this might come out of the NNW so the shoreline gets hammered. And being 30 miles from the bottom of the lake throws one more wrench in the weather. Sometimes it can split storms and we have a nice day!

the chickens and ducks are not going to cooperate with us no matter what we do. Hopefully they'll make it through.

Got a chicken coop, I presume? Stick a heat lamp in there?

Ducks do pretty well in cold weather and snow and ice at least here in GA/Carolinas; their bodies are built differently than, say, chickens. My ducks did fine down in the 20s, and there's this account on YT I follow and that dude raises ducks in the northeast.

Just hope the heat lamp keeps the well lines from freezing.

Northwest Washington here, near Canadian border. It's 11F now with a lot of snow still on all the side roads, and freeway shoulders, highway shoulders are deep snow.

Cars in the ditch in places.
People driving like imbeciles.
All the usual snow season stuff.

But it hasn't been this cold in maybe 50 years or so. Plus winds to 30mph very dangerous.
