Citi Says Mass Adoption of Crypto Will Be Driven by CBDCs, Tokenization

Citi says the industry is finally "approaching an inflection point" and that blockchain technology will soon see "billions of users and trillions of dollars in value."

In its latest report "Money, Tokens, and Games: Blockchain's Next Billion Users and Trillions in Value," Citi analysts suggest that the next influx of crypto adoption will be powered primarily by the rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and the tokenization of real-world assets.

During a panel event today during the Citi Digital Money Symposium, which coincided with the report's release, the bank's future of finance lead Ronit Ghose suggested that there will be $5 trillion circulating in the economy in CBDCs "by the end of this decade."

JPMorgan Chase (JPM), the largest U.S. bank in terms of assets, remains steadfast in its plan to "tokenize" traditional-financial assets, largely undeterred by the crypto bear market and regulatory uncertainty.

The bank has processed almost $700 billion in transactions in short-term loans using its Onyx digital-assets platform, a permissioned version of the Ethereum blockchain, where customers can trade tokens that denote ownership rights to U.S. Treasurys as well as use blockchain bank accounts known as JPM Coin.

Among the clients known to be using the Onyx-based repo service are Goldman Sachs (GS), BNP Paribas and DBS Bank. Fifteen more banks and broker-dealers are looking to sign up, Tyrone Lobban, head of Onyx, told CoinDesk in an interview.

King Charles's Coronation has been hit by a sudden death that risks last minute changes needing to be made to the historic ceremony.

The wife of the Duke tasked with carrying the Sceptre with Cross into Westminster Abbey during the King's Coronation has died.

The Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry died after a short illness following an operation.
