The Pakistani President has dissolved Parliament in order to head-off a vote of no-confidence in PM Imran Khan.
This in all likelihood will lead to a General Election - if the military allow.
I'm not sure what to make of Imran Khan.
He comes from a privileged background being educated at top private schools in Pakistan and England and studying PPE at Oxford.
He was a very talented cricketer playing county cricket in England and very famously captained Pakistan to victory in the 1992 One-Day Cricket World
Cup.
He was known as a bit of a playboy and was a regular on the party scene in London in his younger days.
His first wife was Jemima Goldsmith, of the incredibly wealthy and 'influential' Goldsmith family. (Possibly where his links to WEF that you intimated
to began?)
When he entered politics he was portrayed as a 'man of the people' and was very public in his desire to rid Pakistan of the endemic corruption that
plagues the country.
During his time as PM he has faced many problems, obviously including COVID.
And he has had to deal with many economic and financial issues, to varying degrees of success.
Then there are the two massive, bloody big elephants in the room when talking about anything to do with Pakistan and its internal politics; The
Military and Muslim extremism.
There are some who refuse to admit it but there are undeniably very close links between elements of the two.
And the Military oversee all political developments in Pakistan and there is the constant fear of yet another Military coup.
Khan originally distanced himself from both whilst promoting Pakistani culture and self-reliance.
But as his problems increased he has become closer to elements within the Military and has voiced opinions more and more in common with Islamic
fundamentalism.
There is also the constant friction with India to contend with.
For various reasons he has recently felt compelled to seek closer links to Russia - something I'm sure won't be lost on its other big neighbour,
China.
Being Pakistani PM is not an easy gig.
Its all very complicated and I could go into much more depth, but as I said, this thread isn't about Pakistan and Imran Khan.
