WE juSt sTArTed giving them what?

Force-leveling weapons.

Now we’re comparing campaigns with Afghanistan.

Yes, the similarities are striking and the result will most likely end up being the same since the Soviet military was more advanced vis a vis the Russians and each of their opponents.

You could strap a tank on each Ukrainian soldier right now/going forward but it won’t matter in the end.

I seriously doubt Crimea and Eastern Ukraine etc are going anywhere soon now.

What does that mean in English?

Fixed the mistake. Hopefully it rang clearer now.

The Soviets felt the same way in Afghanistan until they didn't. They aren't going to win a guerilla war nor successfully occupy eastern Ukraine.

When this summer? Or next year?

This is probably going to be awhile.

Another pandemic or god forbid a natural event will likely catch the news spot by then

Maybe eight years from now. But their occupation will be as equally unsustainable as the Soviet's were. They unified the citizenry and will need to continue to feed troops in who, may of which, will get sent home dead. There's only so long they can cover that up and with payments and propaganda.

Just like Afghanistan.

ISW reports that Mariupol has been occupied by the Russians with the exceptions of some areas of resistance such as the steel works.

I wonder if the Ukrainians will recapture that lost ground? Along with Misson Command, they have learned the art of counterattacking to retake real estate from the Russians. The Germans mastered that kind of counterattacks against allied lines around the time of the Battle of Cassino in 1944.

Hmm. Mariupol is some distance front the front lines to the west. Might be possible. So far, this has been the Winter War with tanks.

Cheers

Besides hitting the oil depot in Odessa with missiles...I heard that Putin is hesitant on bombarding the city, because Odessa has plenty of historic and beautiful buildings.

If the port city of Odessa is conquered by the Russkies at this time...that will leave Ukraine landlocked.

Does Putin want to leave Odessa in Ukrainian hands, and keep Crimea and the eastern Donbass region for himself?

Or does he have serious plans on conquering Odessa and the rest of Ukraine?

I suspect that Putin is seriously considering --- Gaod forbid --- using chemical weapons against the heroic Ukrainian defenders of the city of Mariupol, who are holed-up in the Azovstal steel plant, near Mariupol's port.

They have a long way to go to get to Odesa. The loss of the Moskva has forced the Russians to view close-in naval operations as high risk. They're not helped as long as Turkey refuses to let their other naval forces sail through the Bosphorus.

The Russians are keen to occupy all of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts so they can claim at least that as a victory.

Cheers

I heard that the southern coastline of Ukraine is not conducive to a sea led land invasion, due to it's rocky shores.

Well, the destruction of Ukrainian historical sites and attractive buildings has been going on for some time. Cannot see why Putin will make an exception for Odessa. Putin is out to destroy Ukrainian culture and nationhood. Mariupol used to be an attractive city with historical sites, but look at in now. Completely destroyed, along with thousands of civilians.

Russia's ambitions in Ukraine are reducing alongside the toll in Russian dead.

What’s Ukraine going to do later in years? Nuke Russia over it

Your posts get more ridiculous as time goes on and this has to be the stupidest post of the year!

Ukraine had the 3rd biggest nuclear arsenal in the world. They voluntary gave their nuclear arsenal up in return for guarantees for their safety and independence.

Ukraine are not threatening to "nuke" anybody. They don't have any nukes.
Your poster boy Putin on the other hand is the only person who has threatened to use nuclear weapons.
Ukraine was never a threat to Russia, neither was NATO.

The only threat has come from Putin. He can end this tomorrow or carry on with his personal vendetta against Ukraine.

Are you talking about the same guy that told his troops to level Mariupol and anywhere else that resisted his forces?

Putin doesn't give a shabite about how pretty the buildings look. He will have his forces pound a place into the ground if there is any opposition to them.

With regards to history I think its the fact Odessa was founded by decree of Catherine the Great. It was also the 4th largest city in the Russian Empire.

The battle for Donbas has begun according to Russian as well as Ukrainian forces

Russia is attacking along the entire front looking for weak spots to exploit.

Zelensky: 'Battle of Donbas' underway as Russians launch major offensive

April 18 (UPI) -- The second phase of Russia's war on Ukraine has begun with the launching of a widely anticipated offensive in the eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky said Monday.

"Now we can say that Russian troops have started the battle for Donbas they have long been preparing for," Zelensky said in a video address, according to the official Ukrinform press service.

"A large part of the Russian army is now focused on this offensive," he said. "No matter how many Russian soldiers are driven there, we will fight. We will defend ourselves. We will do this every day.

"We will not give anything Ukrainian, and we do not need something that does not belong to us."

Zelensky said Russian invaders are acting with more strategic purpose in Donbas than previously, applying more pressure and actively seeking a weak spot in the country's defenses.

"Russian military was tasked to occupy the territories of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions by Easter, thus making a gift to their Fuhrer," he wrote. "However, they will not succeed!"

The Ukrainian military general staff also confirmed the start of a major offensive in the east with new troop build-ups forming in occupied Crimea and elsewhere, the Kyiv Independent reported.

There are now 76 Russian battalion tactical groups in Donbas, with about 11 of those added during the last several days, a senior U.S. Defense Department official said Monday.

Early indicators also point to the Russians making a move in Southern Ukraine, but I am not rushing out to proclaim the next Battle of Kursk. If Ukrainian ground forces can hold for long enough, the Russians will run low on supplies. Poor lead and motivated Russian troops who run out of food might wave the white flag. But if Ukrainians massacre POWs in reprisal for Russian war crimes, then Russian conscripts will fight on.

Concerning Mariupol, IMO, the Russians attempted to bluff the defenders into laying down their arms. Perhaps the attacks sought to cover up their logistical issues.
