Ukrainian forces are successfully launching a counteroffensive in Kharkiv and could soon push Russian troops back to Russia’s border, according to a U.S. think tank.

Russian forces are retreating from the northeast Kharkiv area and notably destroyed several bridges in an effort to "successful Ukrainian attack," the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington D.C.-based group, said Saturday.

"Armies generally only destroy bridges if they have largely decided they will not attempt to cross the river in the other direction anytime soon; Russian forces are therefore unlikely to launch operations to retake the northeast outskirts of Kharkiv liberated by Ukrainian forces in the near future," the report said.

Ukraine’s military success in Kharkiv could force a strategic shift of Russia’s forces, preventing reinforcements now needed in Kharkiv from providing support in other regions, the report said.

These potential reinforcements, however, may still not be enough for Russia to reconquer the region, it added.

"Given the current rate of Ukrainian advances, Russian forces may be unable to prevent Ukrainian forces from reaching the Russian border, even with additional reinforcements," the ISW report said.

"Ukrainian counteroffensive demonstrates promising Ukrainian capabilities and may set conditions for further offensive operations into northeastern Kharkiv Oblast," the report continued.

Humans seem to be hardcoded for war and destruction, i think for us it's inescapable.

Just to prove that point, measure the turnout for Arbor Day celebration (which had just passed us Apr. 29th) versus what the turnout will be for July 4th celebrations. Humans love to see things explode and the destruction from that, but not so much on fixing what is dying on our planet.

I don't think the world has gone mad, i think it just continues being mad generationally.

They are getting lots of experience in removing Russians from their territory. The funny part is all those weapons they have been sent are barely there yet, Imagine when they hit the front i wouldn't want to be a Russian soldier. I never expected them to do this well. yeah, there is a defensive advantage but they have shown offensive capability as well.

I'm just wondering how Putin will handle it if they say took back Crimea? I think Ukraine is thinking it's a real possibility since they are making demands for peace talks to resume.

It's been an absurd claim for over two months.

russia has not achieved air superiority anywhere in Ukraine except Crimea, where they always had it and where Ukraine hasn't been attacking yet

Russia announced a raid on many Ukrainian targets, including US-made anti-aircraft radars and fire control stations of the S-300 complex. “Four air surveillance radar stations, six artillery and missile storage warehouses, and a US-made counter-reaction radar were destroyed in the eastern regions of Ukraine including Krasny Liman, Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region and Kamyshevakh. in Zaporizhia province,” Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said today.

The U.S. has secretly had posession of an s300 made by russia for a very long time at one of our testing facilities.

We broke opsec in that decades old program and donated the entire s300 from our test facility to Ukraine about a month ago when russia started attacking Kiev using planes that take off from belarus, since Ukraine didn't have enough old russian gear to defend from that direction.

Russia has falsely claimed that they've destroyed the donated s300 in a variety of crazy and crazier ways, all of them false reports of course, but they'll eventually succeed in destroying it.

Now they're playing word games to make it sound like we provided a higher quality American radar and missile system, when it's the same s300 that Ukraine already had, the fact that we had analyzed this particular one in the American desert for a decade or two doesn't make it any less of a russian anti aircraft system.

Wanna know what other russian weapons we have at our testing facilities?

Me too. Because we should immediately donate everything non nuclear to Ukraine for use against russia.

I wasn't aware of the Greek system, though it wouldn't surprise me a bit, especially since the detection distance you stated is pretty damn close to accurate (we can actually get closer than that under certain conditions).
