Wow...really oddly quick article on this story....brings an artist named John McCracken in....

Odd, yet interesting art concept.....

Source

A mysterious object resembling the freestanding plank sculptures of the late Minimalist artist John McCracken—or the alien-built monoliths in Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey—has been discovered in a remote area of the Utah desert, prompting theories ranging from extraterrestrial visitation to avant-garde installation.

McCracken Wiki

Great topic, I saw this in the news and was sure someone would post it here! I also read about John McCracken and it could be possible, it looks a lot like his other works.

However, when I saw the pictures my first thought was Interstellar.

Do Tars and Case have a long lost cousin in Utah?

Okay, let's look at this logically.

First, it's obviously man made.

Second, regarding the whole 'undisturbed dirt' thing, it does rain in this area of Utah, and during some parts of the year (like now) it rains fairly frequently. And, if you look carefully in the still pictures, you can even see signs of water very recently. Water over sand covers up and smooths out all disturbances.

Third, it appears to be made out of stainless or some other alloyed metal, hence no weathering. But even if it wasn't, this area of Utah is very arid. Even carbon steel takes a very long time to rust. Given its smooth surface it's not going to collect much debris, and any it does will quickly be blown / washed away.

Yes, it probably is embedded in the ground a ways. If I were to guess, I'd say probably 2-3 feet (if it really is 12-ish feet out of the ground). Otherwise it would fall over.

In my mind, the real mystery here is, why would someone spend the time and effort to go out in the middle of the Utah desert and erect an object like this? One thing which would be good to know is if it is hollow or solid, just to get an idea of how heavy it is. If it's hollow (which I'm guessing it is), it likely weighs less than 100 lbs, which is easily transported by a couple people (with the compunction to do so). On the other hand, if the object is solid, or solid cored (such as stainless wrapped plywood), then it could easily weigh several hundred pounds. If it's solid steel it could weigh as much as a ton pretty easily. Then it would be a far greater puzzle.

ETA - The weight of the object directly correlates to its value (not in a monetary sense, but in an entertainment sense). If it is very light, than anyone could have put it there with a little effort, but its value is only as a temporary curiosity. On the other hand, if it is extremely heavy and required significant mechanized equipment to place it, then its value is more permanent like an artistic statement or some religious shrine of some sort.

From an artistic point of view, it is kind of interesting actually. It stands in stark, almost diametrically opposed, contrast to its surroundings which, just in and of itself, is rather interesting.

On a geologic note, this area of Utah is quite old geologically speaking. There are areas just south of this location which date back millions of years (like 60-80 million years). The Wasatch range, for example, to the north and east of this location is relatively 'young' and only dates back a few tens of thousands of years in comparison.

Just a little factoid for fun. I'm pretty familiar with these areas.

Saw this elsewhere, very interesting but I have a feeling it will turn out to be from a movie or an art project of some type.

Reminded me of the stone archway that was found with carvings of stegasauras type creatures on it, there is an interesting thread here regarding it. Im sure that turned out to be from a left over movie scene also.

Vasa Croe,

Please understand I am not trying to diminish your find here, not at all. All I am saying is, let's rule out all the Earthly possibilities before we start going all 2020 Space Odyssey.

On a personal note, I actually hope the thing really is from outer space! Maybe that might turn the Light of Mordor away from the incomprehensible political madness and onto other more pressing matters. I mean, I could actually picture some advanced alien lifeforms kibitzing amongst themselves..."Okay, this has gone beyond stoopid down there on planet Earth! Let's send one of our obelisks down there and REALLY jack with those silly Human's heads!!"

Heh, yeah, you could be onto something here.

It's the reincarnation of Joseph Smith in the likeness of Rev. Jim Jones, complete with sunglasses on his spacesuit, and the obelisk is altar upon which the doomsday LDS super-cult will make their sacrifices in order to be given the magic golden tongs which will reveal to them the blueprints for making their inter-dimensional galaxy hopping starship. Just make sure someone follows that dude out into the forest this time so he doesn't lose the dang plates...again!

Cool thread and very old school ATS!!
We can tell it's man made from the rivets/screws along the edge but I haven't seen anyone mention yet that it's triangular like a giant metal toblarone!
A great way to get attention for something

The Utah obelisk looks similar to the Kubrick great film scene, all your missing is the monkeys or whatever they are

hopefully no one will make a racist joke about BLM showing up, and how that would resemble the film even more.

Okay, so I watched the video. It does look like it might be hollow in the center, because the guys are looking down inside of it (or at least appear to be). And yes, it is triangular shaped, which actually make sense. I triangle form would be much more rigid than a rectangular form of that size in that orientation.

There's a road (well, Jeep trail) right up to it. I know this area, been all over it in my Jeep. You could take a Jeep right up through the bottom of that wash from the south and drive right in there. Just need some sand flotation tires and low psi, but you don't go out in that area without those anyway. Gets a little rough about a mile south where you have to come down off the ledge, but other than that it's probably not even that rough getting in there.

It looks like spot welds that have been buffed out a bit to get rid of the scorching going up and down the sides.

Pretty cool. Even if it’s something some bored/creative guy pulled off, I dig the intrigue it brings up.

Or could this be just another odd case like Ed Leedskalnin? Was this obelisk sonically driven into the ground? Is it solid? The rivets would suggest it is not....so is there anything inside?

To transport a solid piece this size would be hard. To stand it upright and leave no trace....really hard.

Makes me think it actually is in a hard to reach area. If you had to take the time to put this in, you would need somewhere that was not on the regular path.

Actually, if they went the Leedskalnin route, it would have been pretty easy to get that in place if they brought it to the site on a flatbed or extended bed pickup. I’ve been to Coral Castle probably 6-8x now, we take family and friends there whenever they visit us. 15 years ago the tour guides were keeping up the mystery and never pointing out how Ed built the place, just tossing out “Egyptian secrets” or “Ed knew how to manipulate the Earth’s magnetic field”. But they stopped doing that and now they just point out the pulley systems that Ed was pictured with numerous times.

No, it's the right area. If you look carefully, the rock formations are identical. It's just shaped differently than you would expect seeing it from above.

Hahaha, I’m just realizing now that you wrote LDS super-cult. I read it as L S D super-cult at first and was going to ask where to sign up!

(For real? The crazy sh*t we talk about here and L S D gets auto-censored? My lord....)
