What are the odds?

If these plants are the only source for the ingredient (which I doubt), we are in real trouble, because it is the ingredient that is used in many tablet type medicines.
Its purpose is in making the tablet making process possible with machines. It serves as a type of lubricant.
Calcium stearate is used in Smarties candies for a similar purpose, where they are using a machine to compress the ingredients into a tablet.

The "chemical plant' is a cosmetics production facility. a major ingredient of cosmetics is Magnesium Sulfate. commonly known as epsom salt. normally this wouldnt raise any red flags but there have been two major fires at magnesium factories this week. one in mexico and one in indiana, this could be a 3rd.

I had to read up on magnesium stearate.

Magnesium stearate is a major component of soap scum. It is formed when soap reacts with hard water.
There you have it, it is in tablet medications and breath mints.... and soap scum.

He's basically saying the exact same thing my husband has always been saying since the beginning. Hubs is a micro with years of practical experience in labs working aseptic technique. During these last weeks, he's been the primary person going out of the house for us, and he's been wearing gloves, but not worried about masks at all.

We only use them if we must.
