Common sense says the vast majority of those who recover at home are not counted....just like flu recoveries.

Wouldn't it follow then that those who die at home are also not counted...just like flu deaths?

Morning ATS members. A short update from Tokyo . April 9, 2020 8:30 am

First the very sad news that I personally have to face now. My mother, 89 years old is in a care center. The care center has its first case of the corona virus among those at the center. The patient is on the same floor as my mother. That is all the information I have. The place she is residing at is called "Hope Creek" in East Moline, Illinois. The reason I'm posting the name is because I want to know who the owners are and how come they don't check the staff with the thermometers before letting them inside the buildings. If not, can the company be sued for negligence ? I'm really pissed about this.

Here is a short update for the morning. I'll have a more detailed one later.

1. 144 new cases of infection in Tokyo
2. thousands and thousands of businesses are shut down now
3. govt. is asking people now not to hoard supplies
4. taxi co. is going out of business, no fares, As of April 7, the company abruptly FIRED all 600 drivers. sucks
5. employment situation now is this : DIRE can't believe the govt. said that (that mean "depression" folks )
6. the closing of day care centers for children in Tokyo (sticky subject here, since it might be voluntary )
7. lots ( maybe thousands ) of young people are now believed to be infected
8. 415 new cases in Japan ( I post the numbers of being tested down below )
9. 4873 cases of infections now
10. 98 people have died
11. 632 people have recovered
12. it is now being said "EXPLOSIVE NUMBER OF CASES IS NOW POSSIBLE" I knew that all along
13. govt. is saying that if people can reduce contact by 80% for the next month, a reduction or leveling off of cases will happen. (sure, let the kids still go to school by train, subway and bus, let the salary people do the same ) It just ain't going to happen unless they enforce everyone to go to school and work by bicycle. (remember people I said by bicycles)
14. number of calls to the corona hot line exceeds 4000 in one day
15. number of people tested 4-8 -20 was about 1500 people ( see people, we are not testing big time here )

bottom line is yesterday with the news about my mother's care center is...

Considering the entire justification for the lockdowns and stay-at-homes and government picking and choosing what businesses are essential and what ones aren't and are forced to close hinges heavily on the fact that infected are asymptomatically virulent for a varied number of days prior to exhibiting symptoms, there's likely no recourse for you as it would be nearly impossible to prove the facility allowed a worker in who was exhibiting symptoms or running a fever. It's actually a huge flaw in their logic... they use the asymptomatic as the reason to order most to stay home, but then they tout how everyone in essential jobs is getting temperature checks prior to being allowed to start their shift... well, by the time they're running a temperature, they've already been shedding the virus for a day, 2 days, a week even while at that same job.

So scary. I have a friend in exactly the same situation. Sending good thoughts to your mom.

Common sense says what about all the cremated bodies unaccounted for in China in January?

HHS: Federal Stocks of Protective Equipment Nearly Depleted

The Department of Health and Human Services told the Associated Press Wednesday that the federal stockpile was in the process of deploying all remaining personal protective equipment in its inventory. A small percentage will be kept in reserve to support federal response efforts, the department said.

Don't those who die at home still need to be referred to a medical specialist to determine cause of death?

Really sorry to hear about your mother! Mine made a great escape from the home she was in a few weeks ago (86yrs old)... she was there waiting for Medicaid to kick in and then would be moved to maybe a memory care facility (vascular dementia). Since I don't have guardianship she decided to hell with it all and got an Uber and rented a motel room (I live 4 hours away). There was something that went around in November and she got really sick but recovered. She and I generally don't get sick often and I wonder if they got hit with it then. Anyway that's a very long story that has been a wild ride but I don't think they were doing checks AT ALL there either. I have a Dr friend in Arkansas and he does a weekly round to a nursing home. He said last week they were doing temp checks at the door and he was happy about that but the other precautions were still too lax. We're definitely starting to see more testing positive all over the US in nursing homes!!

Yes, but they're having trouble in some places

Thank you. I'm an ocean away so it is impossible even for me to get a phone call in. Wish they had skype set up. I just can't believe how people are so unaware of the dangers that are all around us.
In the Quad Cities now has 60 cases. This is crazy. People are NOT listening to good advise these days.

We have just had a nearly 12% increase in our confirmed cases in my province overnight and this with a lack of holistic testing.

Members in the military are standing by and I feel as if a larger shut down is coming... perhaps they are waiting until after this Easter weekend to do so.

We are seeing fines now for gatherings over 5 people or if you don’t stand more than 6 feet from each other.

Here is a really good video on the math of the epidemic and gives us some other numbers to track that will give us an idea of whether or not the growth is increasing, leveling off or declining:

Thanks.
I like that tagline at the end:

"The only thing to fear, is a lack of fear itself".

That's not what we are used to hearing, but that does hint at how the statistics work for social distancing in a pandemic.

You say the death rate is 13% does that mean if you get it, theirs a 13% chance that you will die?
