In LA they are testing if it will aid treatment. Whatever that means.
It also serves to know how to treat the patient.

On March 10, Natasha Ott, 39, felt the beginnings of a cold coming on.
She had a slight fever. CrescentCare, the medical clinic where she worked, had only a handful of tests for the new strain of coronavirus on hand. She initially passed on the chance to take one, after being told she was low-risk for the serious disease.
When her symptoms didn't shake, she did take the test on Monday. By Thursday, she felt "something in her lungs," she told longtime partner Josh Anderson. But she still felt well enough by then to join Anderson as the pair walked her dog.
On Friday, Anderson found Ott dead in her kitchen.
Her test results have still not come back. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has not released a cause of death; state health officials have not said whether they believe it was a case of coronavirus.

I have been watching the US numbers, every day the critical cases in the ICU stay at a steady number of 64 cases, yet every day a couple dozen or so people die. That means that people are dying in their homes without treatment, trying to shrug this off and are later found dead, then later tested.
This is very sad..

Yes, I think the point is that the infection rate is such that coronavirus is assumed in patients who are admitted. I think ICU means isolation, but I could be wrong. The article is behind a paywall.

This conversation started with people wearing homemade masks as they go out and about.
Not exactly the same situation.
Go ahead and wear one as you go out and about, if it makes you feel safer.

But the thing is - why can't they train people who have different kinds of medical backgrounds than actual nurses and doctors to do the tests?
Hardly anybody is giving blood at this point, use the blood bank phlebotomists for testing - a lot of dentist offices are closed, surely they have enough medical background to do the tests..
They could have testing sites away from hospitals, which would take some of the 'chaos' away from emergency rooms, and recruit all manner of alternate type medical professionals (or even medical students for that matter) to be trained to do the tests..

I dunno....maybe I'm just getting into a negative funk, but as I look at the government(s) responding to this, I'm getting a really bad feeling. Not even considering how hard our economy is going to crash down with everything closed, the bailout that big companies could get, the number of people that will be on unemployment, etc. As soon as I started hearing that they all might easily agree with sending citizens money to give us a hand....I mean come on....normally you would have to pry that money from their cold dead hands! I just get the feeling that they already know this virus (or something else they are hiding) is going to end us. I mean....why else would they be ok with the fallout of all this? It's like they know it won't matter in the end.

The nine most terrifying words in the English language are "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."
Even now, the final toll can barely be guessed at. Yet some things seem certain already. One of them is that the economy in China, where the novel coronavirus was first identified and which for weeks had been the epicentre of the pandemic before it spread overseas, will sustain damage on a historic scale.
CONCLUSIONS:
Receipt of influenza vaccination was not associated with virus interference among our population. Examining virus interference by specific respiratory viruses showed mixed results. Vaccine derived virus interference was significantly associated with coronavirus and human metapneumovirus; however, significant protection with vaccination was associated not only with most influenza viruses, but also parainfluenza, RSV, and non-influenza virus coinfections.
