With all things, it is probably always wise to have a sense of proportion. What I mean by this is, take a look at this site, and look at the stats...
www.worldometers.info...

Corona and flu deaths combined = about 80,000 people a year.
The world population TODAY alone increased by 238,379.

So all of those dead people (most with probably underlying conditions) were replaced in the last 12 hours.

For a virus to seriously threaten the population of the planet at this point would need to be insanely successful.
As much as the info coming out about COVID19 seems serious, I'm very unsure at this point if it is even a contender.

It is an important thing to get your head around. Relativity.I have this in my head, and even then I am still susceptible.
So this is just a little reminder.

It's comforting to know that if I die today, I will be easily replaced by a hoard of newbs in the world. LOL.

I'm not in any way downplaying the seriousness of the virus, nor its personal and emotional implications for the individuals affected. You, me, our loved ones. To anyone who has been watching, that aspect is obvious.

What I am saying, is when you look from a higher perspective, taking emotion out of it, then it is very clear that the virus has a lot of work to do to seriously impact our runaway population increase. Also, that the chances of suffering serious symptoms from it are statistically minuscule right now.

The concerns of some from reading these threads might be out of proportion, and I don't even exclude myself from that. It is all highly out of the ordinary... but more so the response than anything. It just doesn't hurt to touch base with the larger stats and put them into relation with what we know. That's all.

Good point; but at the same time according to some of the things I have read on here for the last two months we should have been well into the end times by now.

I think the quarantine in China did have an effect on slowing down the progress. Now that it is in the wild in other countries, how they react will determine what comes next.

My own opinion is to start mass quarantine sooner rather than later. If governments wait too long, it will be too late. Here in the states, I would like to see schools closed within the next 2-3 weeks at the latest. Stay at home orders within a couple of weeks after that. It may not be a popular idea, but if we could wait till the current cases run their course, it may burn itself out. Stop the spread, dead. It is the only option that makes sense to me at this point.

As much as that thought sounds odd - quarantine in our homes! - I totally agree with you. I believe it would stop the spread if we all stayed at home for a good while. I wish I could win the lottery so I could buy more stuff for some people who are concerned and can't prepare.
breaks my heart. But I am not working right now and am using my savings I had to maybe move this summer.

Therein lies the problem. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, including me. I have been preparing for years though, just in case. I started in 2014 just in case of Ebola, and have kept up since then. Some here and some there, just topping things off is all I am doing now.
Wanting to help others out is great, but so many don't even want to help themselves out. They just stick fingers in their ears and say "it will not happen here." It can happen here, I hope it does not.

When this is all said and done though, I don't think my business will survive. I make and sell hobby products. Custom PCBs are assembled in Shenzhen, so I have had 2 months already where I could not get stock. Since they are a hobby product, no one will be buying hobby stuff for a while. I have seen a huge downturn in sales since Jan. already. I just don't know how the business will continue. After it is over, I may have to go flip burgers. LOL

Not everyone have freedom to do whatever job they can get their hands on.

For intance i would rather starve to death that work a job i don't want to or don't enjoy.

There are also a lot of jobs where you work 20 years to get promoted and actually start to earn tons of money but if you skip one day you are fired.

BTW i hate USA mentality. Its always buy buy buy buy when something is slightly off.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that containment of the global spread of coronavirus was possible "but the window of opportunity is narrowing".

Window's barely a crack now - good luck stopping it UN

Unless a 100 percent reliable test can be developed that can detect asymptomatic victims, and do it within minutes (at the most) those horses have long ago left the barn. Even TOTALLY closing the borders of every country right now would likely be a futile gesture for most of them.

IMHO.

Whataboutisms using the regular flu are exactly that, whataboutisms. It's a way for people who are unable to see future trends to calm themselves and others. The same people that employ this whataboutism are unable to grasp the concept that there are more than two courses of action on the eve of a global pandemic. They think their only options are to either panic, or stick their heads in the sand. They are unable to see the 3rd option, which is calmly prepare for what seems inevitable when analyzing the trends.

There are over 100 viruses and bacteria infecting people worldwide right now. We have been undergoing waves of epidemics without anyone realizing because the media doesn't cover it from this angle.

Yes prepare for disease. That's obvious and critical.

But if you learn more information you won't be afraid of disease anymore.

The true concerns here are the panicked population and the govt mishandling everything.

Perhaps true. However, there are only 3 coronaviruses that attack the human ACE2. MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, and CovID19.

That is insane! Surely this should be mainstream news! Closing the lab with no reason in the midst of the outbreak seems so suspect! I'm sure even non conspiracy theorists would agree.

yet another strange, unexplained circumstance...

The Shanghai laboratory where researchers published the world’s first genome sequence of the deadly coronavirus that causes Covid-19 has been shut down.

Yeah, maybe what they learned was just very bad news. When your house catches on fire, if you don't put it out fast enough, the only recourse you have is to get out.

Hey, not all hobby type items will fall in demand.

Camping and survival skills provide a hobby for some folks too, and DIY building projects, and that sort of thing. Use your imagination, and just try to slowly adjust the inventory of your store, if possible. I know those things work really slowly, but maybe you could start with baby steps. I don't want to see your operation (or anyone's) going out of business. That'd suck if it could be prevented, especially.

If some of us are going to be possibly stuck at home for days on end, we are going to need hobbies of some kind

Yeah it's ridiculous - it's giving people the false perception that it is nothing/don't worry/carry on as normal but wash your hands basically.
I think they have forgotten that China shut down their entire workforce, quarantine millions of people and have gone to extreme measures to try and contain it. Also interesting to note is that here the MSM have not really mentioned China for a while...

I get the feeling that if China told us everything this know about this, we would all be wishing that they hadn't told us.

What's interesting about this case is that there was one confirmed case in WA state way back. I think it was the first one, and from I had read, had recovered. So the news anchors were just asking if this was the same person who had fallen ill again, or a new person that we didn't know about. I'm happy to hear that the news anchors are asking these questions. Hopefully at 1:30 the press conference will give us more details.

The Washington Department of Health confirmed Saturday the first coronavirus-related death in Washington state, according to a press release.

Health officials said there are new King County cases in addition to the two new cases confirmed Friday evening.

The department is hosting a press conference at 1 p.m. to provide further details.

Trump must be going to address this.

Whats better? Being lied to so you can't prepare but being blisfully ignorant, or being told the truth so you can prepare but it will spread panic beyound anyone's controll?

Because if you ask me both options are bad. I rather only i know the truth without being able to share it because hummanity as a whole has to be lied to or else all goes to hell due to crowd mentality.

I wonder the same thing. My browser is running really slow ATM but I just read that there are new cases in King County in the same update where I read about the death. There were no details about the person who died
