Canada:

It’s all going to Hell in a hand basket, as my mother would say...

Our Prime Minister is in self-quarantine as his wife gets tested.

Our schools in Ontario just shut down for 3 weeks (1 of those weeks was for March break).

The lady who sits behind me at work was tested today. 36 hours to find out the results. She said the swab practically hits your brain as it goes up into the sinus cavity (exaggeration, but she said it was brutal). She cried as it hurt and is in pain afterwards.

My son’s friend has a brother in his 40s who is one of the confirmed in Toronto. He is on a ventilator.

Popped into the local bar near work. The manager had to lay off five people today as there is no business.

Radio silence from my friend on the military base taking care of those cruise ship passengers (maybe just busy).

Wow. I am going home to drink.

I was thinking, if this thing has been around since at least November in China, we may have had it in the UK by December. Maybe the reason our gov't is so slow to do anything is that they realise this thing has already spread far and wide over here and there may already thousands infected.

Imagine it had a death rate /CFR of 2 up to 3.4%. 100,000 people infected in UK since December would average 2,000 to 3,400 deaths already. (20 a day give or take.) So they're in no rush because we are already in the thick of it. So no point closing borders, schools et al. It didn't have a name back in November and wasn't public knowledge, so cause of death may be put down as pneumonia related and the gov't now realises......sh!!t, we've had it all along. Don't want to scare people with such high death numbers so they slowly start increasing numbers and letting people know this thing is here. Their reaction would seem slow to Johnny public.

Just a thought. Because if our UK numbers are true, and with no incoming flight restrictions, we are bound to see a huge increase similar to Italy witin the next 2 weeks. Why wait and not act now?

Also notice how Trump condemed the EU but us Brexiters were given a hall pass to that fabled land across the water. Brexit just in time???

Another thing: COGNOTIVE DISSONANCE. This is what i am seeing with people on social media. They are being told one thing that goes against their beliefs and it makes them uncomfortable so a lot of people do not want to hear anything about it. "Stop talking about it." "You're over-reacting" "I don't want to hear no more" or our favourite "It's just the flu".

I must say, having been on this since the beginning and realising when i changed course on this thing, it has been a real psychological study into the actions and reactions of all people in relation to this thing.

OK. Thought train over.
I definitely think it's been here a while, i had a very bad case of flu in January and a cough that lingered for weeks. My whole family had it too, and most people i know also. People around here have been saying "there is a really bad flu going around" for the last 3 or 4 months now.

Yep absolutely, me too me and the whole family kept getting ill over and over, friends also, we are young early 30's so it was weird, one friend was so ill she was hallucinating.

Don't want to get my hopes up that it has already been and gone but the thought had crossed my mind.

We've all been talking about the Coronavirus (through all of it's various names) since thread 1, and I felt prepared, yet today feels a little overwhelming news-wise. I don't think I've ever had as many notifications on my phone with changes/updates/posts as I've seen today. Historic times these.

I am with you. We are fully prepared (or are we... we aren’t supposed to talk about that... :devil
, but man, yesterday and today are epic. In the Western sense. We are now starting to experience some of what China was going through weeks back. I think we can now empathize with their emotions.

I think its been circulating for longer than they have been reporting too.
My family went through something in late January that was fast and knocked everyone out for a few days.
We recovered quickly except my husband who is almost 68. He was sicker for about a week to ten days longer than everyone else.
We never get sick and I have never had the flu. My kids have never had the flu.

I just checked the first thread on this and on February 3, there was one case recorded in the USA and today there is over 1500. Thats only 38 days and its 1500 times higher.

St. Patrick's Day Parade cancelled in my neck of the woods.

Known as the Worl d's shortest parade because it ends on the street once listed in Guiness as the world's shortest. Hasn't been dethroned, the newer editions just nixed the entry.

Glad it was done but sad that I no longer get to see Blues Traveler play!

Clearly, we all need to be acting on commonsense, and treat this infection as a real bonafide pandemic, irrespective of whether or not we want to give it credibility. We know it can infect anyone, and we know that it proves to be more serious to older people, especially those who already have underlying health issues. Younger folks with stronger and healthier immune systems will cope with it, but it may not be comfortable.

Each of us now have a role to play in beating this thing down, and getting everyone past its peak. SO DO THE RIGHT THING! - at the slightest inkling that you or a member of your family are coming down with something, SELF-ISOLATE!

Don't go to work (protect the health of your colleagues), or send your kids to school (protect the health of other children), call your doctor before visiting and seek advice. You may just have a cold, or the general flu, still stay away from others.

There's no need to panic buy products, we have to help each other get through this thing, and we will if we do the right things.

I've already told you this is the most contgeous and infectious disease ever seen.

Merkel isn't joking when she says 70% of Germans will be infected (58 MILLION of them).

20% need hospital treatment.

3% will die outright.

Another 5-8% will die without intense medical intervention.

You can't provide that to 3.75 million people.

Add to that all the deaths from now untreatable ailments (heart attack, etc)

Add to that the lack of anti biotics etc (no country has enough high dose ABs to treat 3 - 5 million people - maybe 30K to 50K tops).

Total death rate = c. 18% of all infected which in Merkels prediction is 10.45 million.

If she's wrong and 90% get it = 13.4 million dead.

Now multiply by your own population = the # has hit the fan big time.

And yet in the UK.....

We're still allowing the Cheltenham festival and incoming flights from anywhere in the world.

Because we know that a cup o' tea and some fish and chips and mushy peas make you immune.

Laughable.

Well not really.

Never mind, keep calm and carry on.

PS - AS SOON as the Cheltenham festival is over (which raises £100's of millions for the toffs like BJ and his clan), schools and all other publicgatherings will be banned.

I've already been told this is what WILL happen.

Next week in the UK - schools and universities shut down, no more gatherings, etc.

Got to get the money maker out of the way first.

Watch this space, I'm telling you next week UK shuts down.

www.google.com...

It brings in £20m in revenues, £100m to the local economy. Hardly billions, certainly not enough for even the worst sociopaths to recklessly endanger peoples lives over.

What do you think to the actual rationale for these types of decisions, that essentially we are all going to get it eventually anyway, that if you are ill DON'T BE A DICK and isolate yourself to spare others from getting it too and maybe don't go to the horses. But at the same time let's not bring the whole country to it's knees immediately by destroying our economy...

First, Happy Birthday!!! Second, yay, he agrees with you!

Do you think he’ll agree to let your daughter stay home from school? They’ll probably close them down soon enough either way.

*my daughters birthday is Saturday (we’re going feather bowling) and she said that one day she can tell her grandkids she celebrated her 27th birthday feather bowling during a pandemic.

In the central Illinois area, our health system sent an email to all service providing members to avoid any / all business travel outside the 40 counties we serve. If we did travel out of this area, we were warned that we may be put on 14 day quarantine upon return, and we were ESPECIALLY discouraged from international travel. I guess it just got real in Central Illinois. I just wonder: why specify ''business travel' ?

Norovirus, chickenpox, smallpox, and measles are FAR more contagious

No they're not.

You think they are because that's what you've been told.

The true contageousness of this is off the charts.

You’re dramatizing. Stop

You don't need dramatising, just open your eyes.

This has an R0 of over 30.

Measles is about 18.

Have you ever seen measles infect at the rate Italy of Iran or China or soon the UK and US are seeing with this?

No.

Because it;s off the charts.

Is that true though? - www.washingtonpost.com...

Right at the bottom you can see measles could spread from 1 person to 6000 in 42 days in an unvaccinated society. This doesn't seem to be spreading quite that fast, as most outbreaks of this seem to have come from more than one person travelling into a country.

It say that local and national leaders are calling for the public, business, nonprofits and religious organizations and “all other entities” to change behaviors.
Somewhere in the article it says churches need to reduce and eliminate events and “activities” that may spread the virus.
So I wonder how churches will handle communion.

many will likely use the sealed from manufacturer communion cup/wafer that are often used for things like conferences.

Indeed. Even though the first reported case in China was New years, I read somewhere that they had potentially tracked the first infected (in China) to early Dec.

And what with the exponential growth every 7 or days, the graphs of the also show this growth from the first official infection...so with a possible 2-3 week of infections that were not known at the time..

Are any of your local Counties having press conferences WITHOUT confirmed cases?

The Board of Commissioners said in a news release Thursday, March 12, that no cases have been confirmed in Genesee county, but the Response Team will provide the most current information it has to residents, businesses and employees

The Health Department has scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Friday, March 13.

The Health Department is in close communication with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as other local health organizations “in order to protect the public and to help us respond properly if the situation changes,” the county release says.

Commissioner Bryant Nolden, a member of the county Board of Health, said earlier Thursday that officials “know that it’s just a matter of time” before a case is confirmed.
