One thing that's worth pondering is that well over 99% of all species that have ever lived on earth are now extinct.

We think we're immune to that possibility, but we are as susceptible to extinction as any other species.

The earth has a successful eco-system because it somehow manages to cut the fat in a way that makes overall life sustainable.

We are a species that manage to absorb our time oodling Kim Kardashians voluminous posterior while simultaneously consuming ever growing amounts of natural resources to do it - to the extent where China (where this all started) need to eat anything that moves just to live another day.

Meanwhile every other species is spending it's time just struggling to survive in a (for them) shrinking world.

Our golden age (of having whatever you want right now, and filling your time with meaningless nonsense) has been the dark age for everything else on earth.

Maybe now it's our turn.

Would the world really miss us?

Its reports like this that start to give me anxiety..what on earth are they hiding? Whatever it is wont be hidden for long as we will all soon me living it like they were in Wuhan.

Tin foil hat: I'm sure i read earlier in the year something about an ELE like a meteor or something and this being a precursor to that.. I cant remember how they linked it together but when I start getting anxious my mind wanders off to all these weird, and terrible extremes!! (Which I'll add, I dont believe, but my mind can be a funny place at times) anyway off topic, sorry!

I agree, I have been calm recently. My anxiety was pretty high a week or more ago. I took the time to prep a little more as I have stated.

Also, I am no longer going to argue with people on the matter. It isn't worth it. People are so sure that they have it figured out and they are so positive that they are right, there is no point in debating the topic.

I hope this all blows over and we look back at it and say, whew we kinda over reacted a bit. But the other side of me is ready for an uptick if it does happen. I got my preps, no need to panic shop, I've already taken the necessary steps to try to gelp out my families and I situation if the time comes. Now I can sit back and laugh at all of the uproar over the toilet paper and hand sanitizer debacle because I picked mine up weeks ago.

All we can do is be vigilant and be ready if the time arrives to take whatever action is needed at the time.

If you are as ready as can be there isn't any reason to panic. Let the naysayers and everybody else panic if thay time comes for them.

I even joked with my wife that we don't need to do any pandemic shopping.

Gov. Inslee is on Seattle radio right now, He has declared a prohibition in 3 counties on all public gatherings over 250 people,

To much to type for my fat fingers but a couple key things:

-he is asking whomever is able to telecommute to work please do so, (duh)

-he is asking for the public transit system (METRO) to clean all the busses,

-he says schools may close within the next several days, he is asking everyone to plan for it.

-he says they will work to assist unemployment due to the issue.

Nothing unexpected really.

PANDEMIC!

They said it!

That's probably why Trump and his team had the emergency meeting this morning, ahead of the announcement.

Reuters said that the White House claims that the meeting was a scheduled meeting, not an emergency meeting.

Yet another official who has no clue about exponentials and epidemiology.

If you're going to allow gatherings of 249 people with a raging epidemic, you might as well allow gatherings of 999000 people.

The only difference is how long it takes for everyone to catch it.

And it won't take much longer.

That tells me that one of our high ranking officials, possibly the president himself has contracted it. That's the only reason for classified unless there is something MAJOR they aren't actually telling us about the virus.

Great article by National Geographic

The problem with this article, as with all others, is it is based on numbers that are simply not factually correct, even though they are technically correct on the surface.

If the infection rate - R-naught or whatever - is indeed much higher as many here claim, that in and of itself disproves these numbers, because if there are really 10, or 100 times more people walking around infected than the numbers show, that means that the CFR is in fact 10 to 100 times less than what the current numbers show.

You can't have it both ways.

In England Cheltenham races are being allowed to go ahead, there will be over 50,000 people visit it.

All of this refusing to shut down public gatherings reminds me of the scene in Jaws, where there's a killer shark eating people, but the mayor wants everyone on the beach and in the water for the local economy, and anyone who says there might be a problem is a scaremongerer.

Then when someone gets killed by the shark they say "how was I to know, it's not my fault".

Or the others died of „flu pneumonia“ instead of corona like they did fake the death numbers in china. We had that in thread 1

Well... since, according to the CDC, between 12,000 and 61,000 people have died each year from the flu since 2010, and about 50,000 die each year from pneumonia, it stands to reason that there will be a lot of deaths this year from flu/pneumonia/not COVISD-19 - doesn't it?

Doesn't it seem pointless to argue about the numbers until this is over?
There could be a lot of factors that affect the numbers over the next few months. A vaccine, verifiable data, people dying some period of time after infection (or even dying after recovery).... etc.

Quote...

We have therefore made the assessment that #COVID19 can be characterized as a pandemic

Pandemic is not a word to use lightly or carelessly. It is a word that, if misused, can cause unreasonable fear, or unjustified acceptance that the fight is over, leading to unnecessary suffering and death

Describing the situation as a pandemic does not change WHO’s assessment of the threat posed by this coronavirus. It doesn’t change what WHO is doing, and it doesn’t change what countries should do"

To me that doesn’t say pandemic, that is waffling because of the pandemic bonds. Characteristics and Describing as are hallmarks of political double talk and rhetoric.

Its different when it hits your back yard. For those of you that think you know you dont, until it is staring you right in the face.

We're up to 23 cases (I think, last reported by CDC at least), and it is no different than before we had any reported cases, because I knew we would have reported cases, and I knew the entire country would likely end up with a large number, and with quite a few deaths.

This is how new viruses work. Some are worse than others. This is not the Spanish Flu, thankfully, that had about a 10% actual CFR, once all the numbers were crunched. This one looks like it will be less than 1/10th, if not 1/20th as bad when all is said and done.

Let's just hunker down, and protect our most at-risk loved ones, and stop calling for murdering the entire world's economy over something destined to become just another bug to watch for during 'flu season'. And before you pile on, yes, I know, it ain't the flu, but it has similar symptoms, and once the first couple of waves are over and our immune systems adjust somewhat, that is what it will be like.

Unless, of course, the reports of a malicious bio-weapon with unknown secondary and much more lethal vectors are true, in which case, all bets are off, and everyone prepare for the zombie apocalypse!

That's very fast. From contracting infection to dead in 3 or 4 days... Even if it means dead 3 to 4 days after becoming symptomatic, that is fast.
