Italy has reached the 400's. Meanwhile, Japan is lagging at 178 even though it had confirmed cases a lot earlier. What might be the factor here? Obviously response time is critical, but still, there must be something else, right?

Thanks for all of your updates, much appreciated. I know an old friend of mind currently in Iwakuni, I asked him about the virus and how that is affecting him, and the area he’s in . He basically said nothing is going on and not to believe the media, that it’s overhyped. I was rather shocked he said that. How far away are you from iwakuni?
Its just a bit north of me. We get to hear the plans coming in from Okinawa or other places that head up north. Possible to Yokota Air Base in Tokyo . Hard to imagine after last nights news what he said. Did he realize 2 major concerts were canceled at the last moment and left people on the streets of the entry to shows. Its serious people . When the govt. starts using the word "clusters", I feel they are up front with us now. Before, not so much.
Testing doesn't really accomplish much except getting the numbers right

Sorry if already posted but this looks highly suspicious.
$425M in World Bank catastrophe bonds set to default if coronavirus declared a pandemic by June.
In 2017, the World Bank designed a new way to raise money: Pandemic Emergency Financing bonds. Over $425 million worth of such bonds, which bet against a global outbreak of infectious diseases and will default if WHO declares the coronavirus a pandemic, were sold by the World Bank in its first-ever issuance of catastrophe bonds. In the event of no pandemic, investors would be paid a healthy annualized return. Meanwhile, the World Bank could use the bonds to insure itself against the risk of a global outbreak.

I have to completely disagree.
Testing will allow a proper diagnosis for the patient. If we are supposed to trust the very people that are supposed to take care of us(healthcare) then a straightforward answer is the way to go.
If it came down to telling me the truth or lying to keep me having a job all to keep slaving for the system. I choose the truth and so should everyone else. It all can be repaired, the stock market and jobs. What I think cant be repaired is confidence in the system. And let's face it that is pretty slim right now for some of us.
The 84-year-old Chrétien was, for a time, the world’s seventh most cited scientist. His name runs atop more than 600 publications and he proudly affixes an Order of Canada pin to his lapel.
The Canadian and Chinese scientists would collaborate on the trials, which would include about 1,000 test patients

I bet tonight's speech will be BS... stocks/economy may be Trump's achilles heal. If he downplays the seriousness of this outbreak tonight to try to help markets then he will likely fall on his sword when the truth comes out and it truly does affect our domestic economy in a bigger way
Not trying to make this political, just looking at Trump's history and in times like this we need leaders who are not afraid to tell it like it is to help raise awareness. In many other ways Trump might "tell it like it is" but not if stocks are part of the discussion IMO
Not to sound like a broken record, but CNN (lol) is saying the press conference tonight is for them to announce their plans of action. CDC lady was added hours after.
I think Trump realizes he'll lose the election if this isn't handled correctly, we will see.
American voters have very short memory spans. This is too far from the election to have much of an impact on the election results. Once this starts dying down voters will forget because it is not import any more to them. Now if the country experiences civil disobedience, recession, etc that will impact the election but any connection to the virus will be forgotten. They will be different issues for the American voters.
If its anything like what happened in china we are entering a different paradigm.
Corona could be literally like 9/11
Remember there was pre 9/11 and post 9/11
This is what has occurred in China as we speak.
We could be facing the same thing.

I wonder if it isn't just related to the people that are doing the counting?
Some might be hiding numbers, but probably more connected to who and how they are testing.

I agree with you but how do we turn the post virus era into something positive? Does our disease surveillance system need improved and number diseases expanded? Does our medical education need improved? What capacity do we need as a country to produce certain critical drugs in this country? What capacity does this country need to have to handle the next epidemic and how to pay for it as it sits idle? The focus should be on the next epidemic as much as it is for the current. If we only look at the current we will repeat it all over again when the next epidemic hits in 5 years or whenever.

You can be sure Trump will pump the markets tonight at 6pm. He doesn't like to see stocks go down. Whatever he says will be spun positively. But I doubt schools will open after spring break in Canada after more cases are found. People here are starting to prep I saw several people buying the stuff I usually buy. The local media has been telling everyone to start preparing so a run on items will occur before long. How will the Dollar store restock items from China I have no idea. So far there is everything, only masks are out of stock.
