I think people should prepare.

This is going to be the longest shutdown in history.

The thing is, Trump doesn't like to lose, so he's going to stick to his guns.

And the Democrats don't want Trump to win, so they are going to stick to their guns.

In the end, Trump may have to start a war, to get things going again. Since, under the war powers act, the president gets tremendous powers to do almost whatever he wants. And since that's the only way Trump can win, it will most likely be the path the course of events take.

Longest shutdown, to end in declaration of war against some nation out there.

Then, Trump wins.

Anyone who hasn't been preparing since Trump became president isn't really paying attention so I doubt a government shutdown going south is even on their radar.

while the "shutdown" is nothing but a political stunt, the fact that soldiers even have to worry about this is idiotic. We can fund other things during the sutdown that are critical, there should be something in place that continues to pay the military members as well. If not, then recruitment will suffer. Plus it's the only angle that isn't butt crack stupid.

What I've learned from this thread is that righties have no idea how the DACA actually works. They're not jobless illegals living off the government. They have to pay the government to stay here, abide by the law, and either attend college, work, or serve in the military.

But... Brown people...

Servicemen and women should have the same pay guarantee as members of congress.

Service people should always get paid during a shut down as should all government workers.............congress shouldnt get paid at all.........I dont consider them real workers.

I'm expecting a long shutdown too. Hope for the best, but I'm just not expecting it.

Starting a war with the government shut down isn't the brightest idea though. Right now soldiers aren't even getting paid, Congress has been too disfunctional to even get a bill going to do that. Even if they were, all the support staff outside the military isn't paid either. Even if the President mandates they show up to work (which he can do), morale won't be very good which is something you need in a war.

can't you read!!!.....the vets DO RECIEVE their benefits, they DO RECIEVE their retirement funds, ALL regular military DO RECIEVE their pay, it's ONLY the civilian contractors that do not get paid.....are you unable to do a little research?

Military members receive their pay as back pay after the spending bill is passed, unless a bill is passed during the shutdown to guarantee their pay. So technically they do get paid, they just don't get paid when they are supposed to get paid. Guard and Reserve units may see their duty weekends cancelled, so they won't get drill pay.

Yep, it is.

Active-duty troops would still report for duty, but pay, basic maintenance and intelligence operations in the military would essentially come to a halt in a government shutdown, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Friday.

By law, troops and federal workers can't be paid during a shutdown, but whether it would have any impact on military pay would depend on how long it lasted. The next paychecks are due to go out around Feb. 1.

In a memo to all Defense Department personnel, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said, "During a government shutdown, all active-duty military personnel would continue in a normal duty status; however, they would not be paid until Congress provides funding."

I'm pretty sure that the SecDef and his deputy know a bit more about what's going on than most people.

In his defense - this was the first response if a couple of other military / former military people too. However, if he investigates further I think he will find out that this is exactly what the soldiers are being told. a reply to: 3daysgone

There isn't enough base housing or barracks rooms for everyone to live on base.

easy slution for that is to pay their rents for them. Or have president trump come out and say to th epeople renting the houses/apartments will not evict them bt granting them incentives to do so.

I agree - isn't this why our ancestors left Europe in the first place? To escape outrageous taxes and an out of control government that only served the needs and desires of the elite? a reply to: bluechevytree

It will be including in the spending bill that gets passed to start the government again, but usually within he first couple checks they get after it's passed. It all depends on how long it goes on. If it's like most of them and resolved quickly, several weeks. If it drags on, then yes, it could be months.
