Leaving aside the issue of awards, there is this series of unfortunate facts which I think is honestly more of a problem than who is actually winning:

Oscar voters are nearly 94% Caucasian and 77% male. Black members make up about 2% of the Academy, and Latino members less than 2%.

Oscar voters have a median age of 62. People younger than 50 constitute just 14% of the membership.

Some of the Academy's 15 branches are almost exclusively white and male. Caucasians currently make up 90% or more of every Academy branch except actors, whose membership is 88% white.

(source - BBC News)

So it's overwhelmingly an old white male group, which I think we can all agree is simply not representative of society.

They clearly need more young people. More women. And more people from diverse racial origins.

Generalizations(stereotypes) are a downfall of intlligence. Once you find one instance of an opposite to the stereotype it destroys said pre-judgement. There are black folks terrible at sports and asians terrible at math...deny ignorance.

I have seen black people treated like gods in sport. They surely must have a weakness too, maybe it's acting?

I hear that black people sink like stones in the water.
Why can't black people swim?

So white folks should boycott the Olympic games track and field events because black folks dominate those and this is unfair.

This is their precious black logic.

How about the NBA?

I hate these little pity parties among the over-privileged.
They have millions of dollars and millions of fans but the lack of a 12" statue drives them crazy.

" . . . black people are good at sport."

Jimmy "the Greek" said as much and was crucified for it. He never worked again. A very sad end for a decent man.

I don't even watch the Oscars anymore. It's such fluff. Where else are you going to find waaaaay overpaid actors wearing $75,000 gowns and millions of dollars worth of baubles to strut their bodies (which they most likely binge/purged before the big night)on the red carpet and win a prize for pretending to be someone else?!

Personally, I think it should be people they played in these roles that should get the recognition.

It does look strange.
Creed got nominations for the white writers and supporting actor, the only white guy in the movie.
No noms in the last 2 years for any person of colour?
Not saying its deliberate but its odd.

a reply to: WilsonWilson

Chiwetel Ejiofor had a nomination for best actor for 12 years a slave. Deserved to be nominated definitely, not sure if he deserved to win.

Barkhad Abdi was in the best supporting actor category for Captain Phillips. I have no idea why he was nominated.

Those were both 2014.

I didn't like Creed much at all, it was pretty boring and predictable really but Stallone was the best actor in it by a long way.

If (and I do mean if) Hollywood is racist and purposefully avoids awarding black actors and actresses these awards, then isn't a boycott of the show by black artists sort of a win for Hollywood? You'd think the more logical movement would be to oversaturate the award show with blacks, not boycott the show.

Spike Lee is way out of line here.

What does he expect people to do vote on a subjective thing such as drama and movies based on race?

Affirmative action Oscars?

So what for two years no black was given a reward maybe it’s just the fact that the majority of movie makers are white…a statistical reality. Or just the fact that the movies they were in weren’t that good.

Plus Lee is a hypocrite. Here he makes a movie very insulting to black people, something called Chiraq( nobody wants to see btw) about black men being denied sex by their woman so they can cease the violence, a so called satire in which if a white person made such a movie Spike would be crying like a baby calling it racist.

Spike Lee degrades the real noble struggle for civil rights with this nonsense

Don't you know that skin color is the most important factor for everything?... Heck, even the President was picked mostly because of skin color instead of people looking for any true qualifying attribute...

I don't give a crap what color or nationality anyone is, because it really doesn't matter, or it shouldn't matter. There are some good black actors who have won oscars and have been nominated for being good, but this is turning more into an "entitlement society", where skin color is more important than any real attributes a person has... Fascinating times we live in huh?...

Yes...skin color is very important in identifying the " Opressors " and the " victims ". This makes it much easier to fit it into the narrative, the oppressor is always white, especially white males.

I think its stupid.

Its like whiners begging for attention.

Here is a thought? Why dont these actors and actresses work for the awards they claim to be left out of? You know? Be talented, and not have a cry baby woe is me victim mentality?

Oscar Voters: 94% White, 76% Men, and an Average of 63 Years Old

This article came out almost 2 years ago, but nothing has changed. The "Academy" is a relic of the past. About all they are good for is letting someone in their inner circles leak DVD screeners to PirateBay.

Cheap shot, using the BLM movement for free publicity..

Are there great Black actors out there, yes but using a publicity stunt is bloody cheap....

Jada Pinkett Smith.....Gimme a break.......She's barely an actress.......

Famous for being married to Will Smith, being in the Matrix (ish) and apparent liking for bi-sexual behaviour...(allegedly)

Creed is a so-so movie, certainly hard to make an Oscar grab for it....Samuel L Jackson in The Hateful Eight, nice but more a standard SLJ role, hardly Oscar nomination material...

Just seem like a cheap use of a current trend to hype black awareness, its a bleeding oscar, not a proper material thing, do it for REAL reasons....A 12" statue.......Jebus......

They know this before the nominations are announced and just now when the nominations don't include them they cry?
That is sour grapes and nothing more.
Don't like the percentages and want to change them? Great work at it like you would any other PRIVATE company. The next time a minority receives one of these awards are they going to be boycotted for accepting it?

*rolls eyes*

Look, either you can act, or you can't.

We all know the !@#$% thing is rigged anyways, and that part is colorblind.

They say color isn't important, but you know what? They sure are making it more important than anything else.

Either the people running these sorts of 'diversity' things are truly stupid, or they're acting the victim and stupid on purpose for sympathy.

I never think in colors, except in art - at least until the ignorant bring up 'color this, color that' - I thought it wasn't supposed to matter and that we are all the same.

Which is it, are we the same and have the same opportunities if we go after them, or do we not?

Wish people would make up the !@#%!% minds and either empower themselves and their cause with well thought out, non-violent, non-ignorant moves, or just continue to be the victims instead of having a mental-shift and going after what you want, REGARDLESS of what 'color' they may be.

Rant over.

How is it alright for there to be racially exclusive awards (BET), but if a NON racially exclusive awards just happens to not choose Black actors, despite having done so in the past, people get all up in arms?

I thought this was suppose to be about acting, not skin color and the perception of entitlement.

To be fair, Marshall Mathers AKA Eminem has been nominated a bunch of times for BET and has and won a award with them on the hip hop version... source

So I guess it's not racially exclusive. culturally maybe...both The Oscars or any group either in my opinion, would be guilty of this and is just simply the culture of socialites being exclusive/ pat on the back/ hee haw/ post game /shower towel slap/tickle fight clubs that they appear to be and nothing more.

And I thought the Oscars was just a big circle jerk of the rich and ignorant.nothing to get all up in arms about indeed. especially by us lowly cogs of the machine.

Basically. This is just rich people squabbling with other rich people about who is getting the most attention. All this really proves to me is that even rich people have something to complain about.
