Why are people STILL bringing race into everything? Isn't the goal of equality to treat people equally regardless of race?

These pundits need to stop setting us back decades. African Americans make up 13-14% of the population. If the racial demographics are correct, in an equal society you should have 13% (give or take) of Oscar winners to be African American, since it represents their population numbers (on average). It gets old when people think they should be over represented just to promote diversity. This mentality is getting old and the media is mostly responsible.

I remember a few years back ESPN made a big stink because no African American coaches were hired one year in the NFL. They don't talk about any factors of these coaching decisions, only mention race, as if it automatically trumps everything else and everybody is racist for not hiring black coaches. It's just as racist to hire somebody specifically because they are black, so how do you fix this perceived "problem"? Do you give Oscars to undeserving folks, just to promote diversity (ie affirmative action style)?

Stop blaming race for everything, it's 2016. We have a mix raced president. People are people. The best people for certain jobs should be hired regardless of race. The best actors should win oscars, regardless of race. The best NFL players should make the hall of fame, regardless of race.

Forced artificial diversity is not diversity. A truly tolerant nation will look at folks as people, not "black" or "white" people. I'm so sick of the media trying to play the race card with everything.

When you understand that the Oscars are awards given by millionaire Hollywood performers to other rich Hollywood performers, I am surprised anyone other than they give a damn who gets what.

There must be at least one, no ...EVERY other problem I can imagine ... that matter more than these rich, entitled whiners and who gets to put a Gold Star on their fridge.

If you go and look at the statistics you'll see that BLACKS alone spent over a BILLIONDOLLARS on movie tickets in 2015. So yeah when you look at the numbers it makes sense why may feel some type of way.

Well Spike Lee hasn't made a good movie in the last 20 years or maybe ever so I'm sure he wasn't invited anyways.

Jada Pinkett Smith was last in Magic Mike and a voice actor for Madagascar....

I heard the lead actor in Creed was really good but I haven't see it yet. I dunno I say let them boycott and cry.

They have an entire network dedicated to African Americans and nobody complains. What other race has an entire network dedicated to them and an award show where only one race is represented.

Point well made!

There's something racist there...just can't pin it down.

There were cottages on the plantations.

Cottage cheese is white.

Cottage sounds like collage and college.

Your math would be correct, but you have neglected to include part of the formula. I won't guess to answer this but it isn't simply the equivalent percentage of the population that is required to fill a group. You see...groups of people excel and often fail at particular things. I'll bet you there isn't 14 out of 100 country singers that are black, probably not 86 out of 100 basketball players that are white.

You can't simply use the percentage of the population to define equality within a group. There is also choice, excellence and more that account for participation. Sometimes blacks don't have it (like maybe with movies) and sometimes whites don't (like gansta rap).

But whites aren't allowed to cry racism...even when it is true. So all you hear is whining blacks.

People will do whatever they can get away with. Especially when it will get them something of value.

It's up to us to tell them to FOAD.

Why do you think jihad caliphate terrorists are having a grand old time ? They're giddy with happy surprise that most of the civilized world, is letting them get away with whatever they can dream up. They can't believe that we're demonizing our own people for complaining about their murders, rapes, bombings.

It's why ISIS creates a more outrageous death scene every few weeks. It's like you gave an 8 year old a gun and a knife and said "we won't say anything, no matter what you do".

In Hollywood, the diversity actually matches society pretty darn closely.

When first looking at this picture one might think that we are actually looking at the racial demographics of the united states. Think again. It is actually the diversity of actors in hollywood (from 2014).

For the US, the demographics (based on 2014 data)are as follows:

White: 62%
Black: 12%
Hispanic: 18%
Asian: 6%
Other: 2%

Now I definitely agree that it is flawed to assume that since 73% are white, that 73% of Oscar winners should be white. You just may get that on average over time if those demographics do not change much. People just shouldn't be surprised if most winners are white for that reason. Sure, it could easily be different. In my personal top 20, African Americans are over represented based on their demographics, simply because I think there are a good amount on that high of a level. But it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with acting skills, and that is what should be judged at the oscars.

The NBA is another great example. 69% African American. Is it a surprise that most hall of famers are African American? Should whites complain about their lack of representation in the NBA hall of fame? Truth be told, a person of any race can excel at acting, playing sports, or even gansta rap (I know some great white MCs). Race only means something when people go out of there way to point something out, that likely means nothing at all. Usually the media is the culprit.

I do also think the Oscars are pretty much a big bunch of pretentious BS, regardless.

It's too bad because I like Spike Lee. In the past, he's done great things to help promote inter racial marriage and equality. Now it just seems like he's whining.

# Spike Lee.

Nobody likes that craptarded movie you made, not even folks living in chiraq.

You made mockery of it.

No prize for you.

The late 80s and early 90s called, they want you back.

Didn't Denzel Washington get some lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes?

I thought that was weird. Strictly as an actor, I don't find him that great. He's the exact same person in every single movie.

Kind of like Owen Wilson or Jason Statham.

I listened to an interview with Will Smith, who is joining his wife Jade Pinkett, in the boycott. When asked why, he said that it was for the children, because children will be watching the awards and when they don't see anybody getting one who looks like they do, they won't understand.

I hate it when "the children" is used like this. Face it. The people that happened to rise to the level of academy award winner this year just simply didn't include any black actors. No racism. Just lack of talent this particular 12-month period.

I'm going to boycott anyone who participates in this boycott. No need to support children.

Shame too, Will Smith is a great actor.

This is an overplay and will blow up in their face.
