Could it possible be there are just so few black actors working. It is not like the NBA where there is so many black players. Acting is a tough job. The talent is just not there. You have the BET awards, the Latino's have ALMA awards. I do not see the conflict. If a person is worthy of being awarded it will happen.

Certainly not if Leonardo DiCaprio played me in it...

Wait...
Are you black?

That changes everything.

No...? But Leo seems totally incapable of winning an Oscar. I think he must have made an enemy in Hollywood or something, as he should have won at least one by now...

Aunt Viv says it best here. Warning some fruity language.

Awards should be colorblind. Did you do well enough to win one? Yes Good job. There is no color involved in that statement.

Ya know...while I'm sure Spike Lee doesn't want to admit it, there is another possible reason why "minorities" aren't winning awards. Maybe, just maybe their movies and/or acting aren't as good as the people and films that won?

You know...just maybe YOU are to blame for not doing well enough? But god forbid anyone, especially a "minority" take personal responsibility for the quality of their efforts. It always has to be the "Lily White" people holding back the black man.

Racism is alive an well in the black community.

I thought this was suppose to be about acting, not skin color and the perception of entitlement.

It is. That's the problem. But it shows the glaring absurdity of "diversity", namely, that skin color isn't a valid unit of measure when it comes to skill, performance or value.

Could also be that they decided to work on crappy movies that didn't make it in the public.

Hundreds of big name movies every year, but only a hand full worth watching.

A good movie can help a mediocre actor, but a GOOD actor can save a mediocre movie.

I kind of agree with them, to be honest. I do not like positive action for the sake of it, that approach just lowers standards across the board. However, i honestly can't believe that not one black actor, director, make up artist or whatever doesn't deserve a nomination.

It isn't about removing some white people to make room for black people. It is more about recognising that there is some decent talent out there and recognising it as such. This year is too late (with nominations already made, changes would make a mockery of the whole thing). However, in future years you would hope there is at least some recognition somewhere.

If people truly want an inclusive society then society itself needs to reflect that.

On the other hand, i kind of can't quite believe that i have an opinion on something as trivial as shiny objects for people that are extremely well paid to entertain us. They don't do anything of worth so i shouldn't be so bothered!

Since when did the Oscars have anything at all to do with the best thing winning?

They're politics, pure and simple. Campaigns are run by studios to try and buy certain actors/directors/movies an award, because then that goes onto the DVD case, and it helps to sell many more copies.

So the politics are saying that white people are more marketable than black people. Probably because white people spend more on the media at a guess.

So it reflects the economics of the entertainment industry. White folks sell more product to other white folks.

Is that racism, or is that the hard economic reality? Or is it both?

I can't help but believe that omission of artist of color from the Oscars 2 years in a row is a purposeful statement. What it's saying, I have no idea. But you can bet, no pun intended, what ever message the Academy is sending, it's politically motivated...imho, of course.

So you think there should be racial quotas for entertainment awards now? The people protesting are angry because they feel self entitled and know a Oscar means more money and prestige. Spike Lee is a racist little troll who, had he been white would have been Mel Gibsoned a long time ago. The bottom line is that all of these claims of racism are b.s. Hollywood couldn't be any more liberal. The fact is the vast majority of filmmakers, writers and directors are white. If blacks want to honestly win Oscars for great movies they need to expand beyond the genre that has gotten them there before but has ran its course.Movies like the color purple or driving miss daisy.
There are some great actors who never won an Oscar and they take it with a grain of salt. To act like entitled victims like that loser Spike Lee only shows the world the petty little man behind the big mouth.

Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith call for Oscars boycott over lack of diversity

Chris Rock calls the Oscars the 'white BET Awards'

Calls for a boycott of the Academy Awards are growing over the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' second straight year of mostly white nominees, as Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith each said Monday that they will not attend this year's ceremony.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Lee said he "cannot support" the "lily white" Oscars.

Jada tweeted 'people of color' are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together?

I can understand why some people might get upset, but do you think this is going too far?

How is it alright for there to be racially exclusive awards (BET), but if a NON racially exclusive awards just happens to not choose Black actors, despite having done so in the past, people get all up in arms?

I thought this was suppose to be about acting, not skin color and the perception of entitlement.

Welcome to the 21st Century... This is what happens when you start giving things to people that haven't earned them. It can only last so long before you start being criticized for handing the award to the ones that earned it.

Your opening question is illogical because the BET awards are limited in their scope, the Academy awards are not limited in scope - it's not a club for white people only.

Why can't you win an oscar/golden globe/BET award? Dunno, Have you been involved in an undertaking that would put you in the frame for one based on critical and/or commercial success? If yes, then maybe a few other people were judged to have been better than you, if the answer is no, then why should you?

If, let's say, in the category of best actor, the nominees have all been praised by the critics, been involved in critically/commercially successful films and are all white - that's the way it is. If the are all black, again, that's as it should be, the same if they were Latino/Asian/transgender/severely disabled etc. If a decision as to who should be nominated takes into account in any way, shape or form anything other than the display of that persons ability in that role in that given movie, then it's unfair. That is the case whether it's an all white set of nominees or a set of token nominees representing various diverse groups plus an obvious shoe in for the award - positive discrimination is still discrimination.

I often feel that Spike Lee has a chip on his shoulder that hinders race relations rather than helps them, but if there is an undercurrent of choosing white actors because that's what the voters prefer, then something is rotten in the system.

If they actually did a quality movie and not some ganser crap they might get nominated. Glorifying gangster trash is just that...trash, but they want to be nominated for trash.

Going too far? Too far for what? I don't have any problem with them boycotting anything they choose to. I wouldn't join them, but they're free to do it. I don't really care.

I don't know why everyone is so concerned with shaming other people's choices... I mean, really... So what? Let them boycott. Everyone gets a burr up their ass now and then.
