They should not have shot the Russian fighter jet, especially not in Syrian airspace.
If we talk about NATO, have a look at the list of countries that make up NATO, of course NATO cannot let Turkey fall as a member/part of NATO, however that does not mean that NATO is behind the plan of shooting down the Russian fighter jet.
Because a country is a member/part of NATO, does not mean it cannot do stupid things on its own.

In short, no i don't see a trap, i see a stupid and illegal move that will have and does have consequences for Turkey.
Furthermore, the only way NATO would somehow get involved or even at war with Russia, Russia must either attack a NATO member, or the UN agree unanimously to intervene in Syria, both options are not going to happen.
In fact, we see a new alliance between France/German (both part of NATO)and Russia, against islamic extremists.

Conventional army vs Non Conventional Fighters ?

Russia had a taste of that in Afghanistan & Chechnya , Georgia , Ukraine to name a few .

Russia aircraft are safe as long as they don't violate Turkish airspace. Nothing in that realm has changed and the deployment of ships and S-400 has no affect. They arent going to attack Turkish units inside turkey since they would russia would start a war they cant win.
