453 dead and 719 injured, this is really sad. Around 300 were killed back in 2006 as well. If the population is too much for the Hajj to handle then the number of pilgrims should be decreased for safety measure.

Problem in large crowds is, all it takes is one person to act like an idiot to create a Panic. I have been in huge crowds before and there is nothing you can do to save yourself other than pure luck in case of a stampede.

maybe you just see it as hate. I don't think it's hateful to point to humans being ridiculous and savage. Whatever that group of humans may be.

TO me...the bull stampede in Pamplona is also savagery and stupid...only difference being...cretins that do it go there perfectly aware they might get trampled to death.

I would guess, with the track record, those going to Hajj are perfectly aware the may get trampled to death as well. Many more die here than have ever died in bull runs.

However, Al Jazeera English's Basma Atassi in Mina reported that it took place among tents erected on Street 204, and not where people were throwing stones at the Jamarat pillars - which are surrounded by a five-storey bridge-like structure.
"There were a group of pilgrims sitting on the floor. Another group walked over to them and the stampede took place," she said.

So, far this is what has come out, seems like there was no one to guide and manage the crowd...

All in the name of Religion.... I guess you could say , they did die for it...SAD

I just wonder why thousands here in the USA will see the Pope, and I guaranty nobody will die in a stampede, so I disagree that it's "all in the name of religion". *Snip* Ya, here in the west, we have obvious problems when it comes to guns, etc. but we have a tad more value for human life on the whole, especially when it comes to "religion".

It has nothing to do with Culture, Blame the authorities for the lack of proper crowd management rather than blaming the Victims of the stampede. Weather it is the Americans, Europeans, Chinese, etc.. everyone is prone to Panic. All it takes is a few idiots to start a stampede and there is plenty of them in every part of the world.

So true.

I went to the Michael Jackson History tour in Wembley in the mid 90s...

Same thing was two or three people from happening there too.

People at the front were being crushed & it was sheer fortune that it didn't escalate just a little further into tragedy.

Some posters make the comparison to animals, while they take obvious enjoyment in their deaths... what does that make you?

Yep, it's all the authorities fault. To hell with personal responsibility. We can't expect tens of thousands of people to think reasonably, as they are influenced by "few idiots". So a "few idiots" cause the death of a few hundred people. Hmmm.

Right, so are you claiming each and everyone who died, Died due to lack of "personal responsibility" ? If you were part of a stampede what will you do with that "personal responsibility" ? Personal responsibility will be thrown out of the window in such situations. Its every man for himself.

Back in Dec 31 2014 36 people died due to stampede in Shenghai China, so i assume people over there lack culture as superior to Americans ? Please take you superior culture nonsense to someone Naive enough to believe it...

The whole thing just sounds like a nightmare to me. I would not ever want to be in a crowd of that many people....talk about claustrophobia!

However this ritual began the originator obviously did not have the vision or forethought of having millions at a time coming for the rituals....I would say this was a fail on the founders/promoters of the ritual AND the planners today. I can see this, in many years from now, only allowing "ambassadors" that have the blessings of their "constituents" being allowed in to perform the rituals on their behalf, but that would likely be too hard to implement.

How are the deaths justified by the religious followers in these cases. If any of my family ever died in a religious ritual that was mandatory of the religion I would not be very happy.

21 died in a similar accident in Germany. Infos

Stupidity in regards of the organizer: people coming AND leaving through the same, far too tight tunnel for these numbers of visitors.

This is just silly. Now if you'll excuse me I need to run with the bulls, chase cheese down a steep slope and waste a metric ton or so of tomatoes in a tomato fight.

I prefer the annual scratching of the scalps.

First off, if you bothered to read my initial reply, I never claimed we had the "superior" culture. I alluded to the fact we have a gun culture which in itself causes numerous unnecessary deaths. Secondly, you are falsely inferring that I said the victims lacked "personal responsibility" and are responsible for their own deaths, which I'm not. I am referring to those that caused the deaths by being influenced by a "few idiots" instead of using common sense and avoid trampling a fellow human being.

It's not mandatory if you can't afford it or are otherwise unable to travel.

It's a recommendation more than an obligation for the most part.
