I guess sprites etc aren't 'flashy' like regular lightning and not sure if the description is all that accurate but a possibility, perhaps even some
gamma ray type lingering plasma phenomena, something that is recent to science research.
That is a potential theory IMO as well as something perhaps man made though at that size there aren't any possibilities.
It would be interesting for more timescales and details, for example is that the same red glow in the distance of a recent photo, how long did they
see it for, did it alter shape or position at all, did the lights move, were they static, did they resemble anything, for example did they look
electrical, could it have been fireworks from a cruise ship, burning garbage, did it look like flames, are there any prospective oil / deep sea
drilling exercises in the area? etc.
Chances are, if it was a natural phenomena, it wouldn't be static. If it was flames there would have been smoke and steam, which could have caused the
glow, though individual hot spots glowing white or blue would have shown dynamism.
As it is, from the photos, it all looks a bit uniform, like reflection from a control panel. More details required.
