But it doesn't make it better or any more admirable.

And I am not saying it is.

What I am saying is that what she is doing is being done for the purpose of staying in the top spot as a female singer. Just look at what other female singers have done in the past to get themselves talked about...

Cher
Madonna
Lady Gaga..she wore a meat dress for god's sake..

In fact do you remember the russian duo t.a.T.u when they kissed everyone thought they were lesbians, but guess what they weren't and they did what they did to get people talking about them which is what helps sell albums and as some don't like it but controversy does mean money in the entertainment business.

What's interesting is many pop stars don't have even the experience of the image they are portraying .So its basically them " acting".

Exactly...

That is the point some seem to be missing here..

Almost 100 dead in Iraq, bomb blasts in Pakistan, a huge terrorist attack in Kenya

But on ATS we talk about Miley Cyrus's new music video.

Really this place is turning into facebook more and more every day.

Yes, I understand but some children and teens can be effected by that. And that's the counter-argument.

One can amuse themselves with someone's acting abilities in the music industry.

I mean after all authentic output and being genuine about what you are doing is no longer necessary , as long as one pumps what ever image is needed out there , there will be $$$$$.

However, on a serious note. It is a signal to adults/parents of a form of rebellion.

And this rebellion often signals that the music industry is going in the right direction.

But they forget some people genuinely think this is " cool" or that she is being authentic in her display.

Art has gone long ago in the music industry - its all about shock value. And it will get worse because people seem to love it.

Must people no longer discuss anything else because of what's happening in Kenya.

Get real. People have multiple conversations, and multiple thoughts on a huge range of issues.
Zilch wrong with that.

No one is saying what is happening there, is of no relevance.

You know the million dollar questions is whose soul did her father that one hit retard sell to make this amount of money and also be the influence of all those tiny teen try hards.

Did anybody notice the eye tattooed on her right index finger.

I dont know if these clowns actually belong to a secret society or they think they are the new elite or what the hell is going on.

What I do know is that like it or not the corruption of the young is speeding up.

Violence sex and lack of emotion, these are all whats hot on the streets, Now with 30% more apathy.

Say what you will about conspiracies and what not but you would have to be an idiot to not see that something is not right in our society. Its like shock value just for the sake of it. Insanity has become the new cool.

What a bizarre world we live in, and put up with by the looks of some posters. I guess some people subscribe to this and would like to see more.

Its all fun and games until you walk in on your daughter getting gang banged. But we reap what we sow so enjoy the harvest. Glad I dont have kids.

But you are correct with the comparison to facebook some days...

yeah...i didn't even like her til I read all the responses from people with sticks up their spines...
"role model"? Is that what you call actors now? I'd worry less about MTV than I would your willingnes to externalize in the 1st place. HOW can you let your child watch Disney at all?

That is a word that I wouldn't use for too many actors or many in the entertainment business itself. I am not saying there aren't those one could consider a role model, but they are few and far between in my opinion.

I think there are far deeper issues that need to be addressed if your walking in on that. The entertainment industry is going to be least of your worries.

it's not about the attention she is getting, it's about the message, the childlike imagery being mixed with sexual imagery.... it's not normal, it's not okay. It's warped view. Very warped. And I know there are many people who agree with this, otherwise, a lot of people would not have been disgusted with it.

I have never seen anything childlike. It's all in your head.
Some people who come up with these fantasies in their head are bit disturbing.

While I was growing up, it was 2Live Crew. Or NWA. Or The Ghetto Boyz. They said some really, really nasty stuff on their albums. Things I wouldn't even say to my wife Things that make the Yin Yang Twins look somewhat normal, even mild. Too Short....I think we all remember....

Would you be surprissed if they would start to appear in your children's Disney movies?

A bit of a bad comparison.

Miley Cyrus reaches a lot more people and a different age group.

There are millions of girls still watching Hannah Montana while on the other channel she is sucking of a sledge hammer squirming on he floor.

I don't really care because there is no problem if you raise your children well, but I do understand that people raise an eyebrow.

But chronology makes that somewhat moot. She was Hannah Montana in the past. THe issue you seem to have is that DIsney is still re-running her old shows.

Should she be required to act in a certain way because of the shows she was placed in as a child?

Cher was getting attention, using her body and sexuality to do so on a ship full of men.

And Miley Cyrus did it to get a bunch of horned up teenagers to watch her performance and get attention...

Looks as though it worked as she is being talked about everywhere...Even right here on ATS.

It seems you are putting all your efforts into assessing her show on your own terms "Childlike imagery"...she is out there with Dora the Explorer? Oh, you mean the teddy bears....yeah, that is less about "childlike" and more about "rave like"

You don't understand what you saw. Not that it was a good performance.

She is merely the latest link in a long chain of similar instances. And there will be many to follow her.

I remember when Britney Spears was making a sexed up video while wearing a school girl uniform. The world survived that....it'll survive this.

What I find disturbing about this thread concerning Miley is how quick people are to lable her a "whore, hussy, tramp". She is an artist. You may not agree with her manner of performing and thats ok. But to lable her according to your standards is wrong. She is an adult and has the right to express herself. I'm no fan of her either, but I would not call her such derogatory names without knowing her personally. She has an act that she performs she is no different from any actor/actress on film or stage. We don't call actors or actresses personal names because of the roles they play so why do it those in the music industry?

Yes, people do many obscene things under the guise of "art". How about the "Piss Christ" display? It was a jar of urine with a crucifix in it. Is that art, or is it an offensive exhibit designed to enrage Christians?

There is serious mental illness in this country and it masquerades as art. It's sole purpose is to incite negativity.

That is not art. It is sociopathy, the pursuit of one's own satisfaction to the detriment of society.

Is the situation I described real or not?

It is a free county but is it really weird that people with children take offence to it?

To me? Yes. I take the world with a grain of salt.

edit to clarify: The show we are talking about is a demographic of teenagers. I find it odd that adults are so riled up about what is on MTV.

I keep hearing "pushing the envelope"....but in all honesty, nothing is being pushed. What she did was no more racy that "I Want Your Sex" by George Michael, all those years ago.

This is much ado about nothing. Meanwhile, something seems to be happening in Syria.

I should add: as a 40 year old man, I have 2 boys. One is a senior in college, the other a soph in high school. And I would never in a million years think about admitting that what happens on television would have any more impact on them than my own parenting.

George Michael sang about sex. He didn't perform the act on stage in front of millions.

So you accept that it has at least as much impact?
