Silo13, THANK YOU for this amazing thread. Having been following your reports and all I can say is wow (and stay safe!!!). With this being Pope Benedict's retirement day, it seems like Etna is providing some fanfare for his departure. Will she puff "white smoke" when the new Vicar is elected?

*Bust out laughing*
Well if She does - you'll see it first here, lol!

Glad you're enjoying the thread - now get over here and help me clean up the MESS from today.

All kidding aside - update time - three towns are as good as 'closed' thanks to the 'cenere' (ash/rock). I don’t remember when the ‘fallout’ was this bad before.

More pics later -
Thanks for the laugh!

peace

As a new member to this site could I say thank you for the excellent coverage of the current Etna activity. The coverage and pictures are the best on the web as far as I can see. i visit Riposto regularly and understand it was covered in 'sand' after the first eruption last week. I am due back in about ten days for a week or so and am wondering how the town is being affected. Any news would be appreciated! Thanks. Mike

Welcome to ATS!

Thanks for the kudos - I'm glad you enjoy the thread. That makes my day.

Fontanarossa wasn't closed - which surprised me actually.

Milo, S.Alfio a few of the towns closer to Etna were devastated with cenere (ash). Riposto? I've heard nothing about that area - though it's close to Giarre? That we didn't hear anything would tell me you're all set - that and there's some time for clean up.

Have a safe trip back - let us know how you find Riposto when you get there!

Added Note: If you're on FB there's a page 'Catania Online' - a real pulse to the area. Something you might find handy.

Having a little trouble posting again.
Etna is playing table tennis at the moment after the paroxysm at the New SE Crater activity continues also at the Voragine and Bocca Nuova.
There is a new opening of an eruptive fissure in the saddle between the old and new cones of the Southeast CraterLava from this reached the monitoring station of Belvedere and descended onto the western slope of the Valle del Bove. I don’t know what the distance of that is.? Perhaps Silo knows
There has been a heavy fallout of ash and scoriae in the area between Milo and Fornazzo, and Giarre and Riposto on the Ionian coast.
She is still running very hot from all craters.

I'm just about coming unglued to get a shot of this new crater.
We got the 'new mouth' as she happened - but this one?
Once more too many clouds.
I hope the webcams show something!

THANK YOU Tzavros!

There is a really incredible beautiful video of yesterday's 'action' at the link &action_type_map=[%22423758614376903%22%3A%22og.recommends%22]&action_ ref_map=]Cronica Live - in my opinion it's a must see for Etna fans.

I'll repost here if it goes to YouTube - which usually happens.

Edit to add:

Reposting url to a number of live webcams.

Here's a better update:

Riposto is listed today as being in a 'state of emergency' due to the cenere. You can read more at:Catania Today.

I hope it's cleaned up by the time you return.

These are wonderful.
At the moment she has a lovely incandescence around one of the craters, hard to say which one. Sometime a small fountain of gas ignites and turns the sky orange. She is not ready for sleep yet.

I can't see anything but there is a LOT of noise from her direction.
Came to check here first before the web cams - etc - as it's so overcast.
Very loud though, enough to raise me straight out of sleep.
Be back with more in a bit -

Edit to Add:
Web cams are down for me here: webcam
