I have a question for all the experts here. This was mentioned on another thread but it didn't get much attention.

About a week ago in the suburbs of Chicago a 3.2 earthquake happened. First it was blamed on a quarry blast but then they found out the quarry blast was 7 seconds before the earthquake. There was an article about how there is a disagreement on what happened. Here's the article, I would be interested to know what people here on ATS think.

There was definitely a single event and not a blast and then an earthquake.

Click the image to enlarge

Here is a 'normal' seismogram of it (same seismo)

Click the image to enlarge

"Suzan van der Lee, a seismologist and associate professor at Northwestern University, isn't so sure.

"To me, the seismographs look like they could be an earthquake," said van der Lee, who examined records of the tremor from a Northwestern-owned seismograph at Ryerson Woods Forest Preserve in Lake County. "The blast would have had to set off much more than 10 times as much as explosive as typical [to register at 3.2 on the Richter Scale]. It seems unlikely that setting off such a large, erroneous amount of explosive would happen by accident, or on purpose."

I am not a seismologist and associate professor at Northwestern University but I have to disagree. Not only does the trace NOT look like an earthquake, the magnitude of 3.2 is NOT 10 times the normal amount of TNT of a quarry blast. That represent just under 1 Tonne of TNT (951kg) and if you browse the mine phases lists you can see blasts of this magnitude (3.2 mlbg) often at Gillette and other mines.

Sorry Prof, you are wrong.

Do you think a separate text file with the list of what is on the map on it would be helpful?

Yes indeed. You could just put them on dropbox and link them as in this example and when the link is clicked they should simply display in the browser.

You do need to make the extension txt however and not csv. A csv file will just get downloaded.

I have not spent enough time researching EQ resources to find minor quake information on Japan. To investigate whether Fukushima's missing cores are deep enough to produce geysers. I have asked others on that thread for links today and in the past but...

My reasoning is that if we see activity like the geysers power plant in California then we know where the cores may be?

Thanks if anyone can lend some information.

If you check the maps on GSAIM that have NIED data and zoom into the area you will see the Fukushima area itself is having very few earthquakes.

The Geysers activity is due to Hydro Fracking, they have been doing it for 30+ years. Its a natural Geothermal Area, Fukushima is not.

Great thanks!
If the cores were encountering any ground water I would expect peculation like a geyser.
There are two reactors that they seem to maintain pressure in and one that is venting somewhere.
I would think that if a core was below the water table anywhere there would be geysers?

And let's hope it stays that way, shall we?

Aye!.
Of course our map doesn't show less than M1, I have that data but don't post it due to a conflict with the Data Pro format. I'll run a few days through and check if there was anything there.

For a comparison here is a map of Japan earthquakes 14th-15th UTC 2009 before the M9.0 and Tsunami of 2011.

part 14-15/11/2009 UTC map

later...........

here is a "dump" of all the prelimainary quakes of all magnitudes except 0, from 08 to 16th October that I had.
Still nothing much around the Fukushima Plant ( just south of Minamisoma at the end of the Joban Expressway)

If I look at USGS maps arround Chiba, could this develope into a swarm and a bigger one?
I just looked at it and thought, that this seems a bit uncommon to see 3 quakes with 4.5+ arround this region.
I mean quakes are not uncommon there, but that you can see 3 within 6 hours of time

Like this?

This area is tense, that 5.5 on 09112013 at Ushiku Swamp hardly had any aftershocks, which I thought unusual, maybe this is the release, distance is about 46km between the two hotspots

further to post by muzzy about the Chiba earthquakes

emsc, usgs and gfz seem to be plotting those 4's and 5's a bit away from where NIED have the main swarm, so I have split the NIED file out
Lat 35.73, Long140.00
Lat 35.54, Long140.33
seems these are the aftreshocks of a 5.2
16/11/2013 11:44:41, 35.6029, 140.1725, 5.2ML, 75.1
with 85 aftershocks to 16/11/2013 23:44:58

here are the results;

Just a heads up. It seems everyone is changing to improve services. Of course some changes are better than others.

RSOE EDIS has changed its maps and method of showing EQs. It seems they did not like the fact that on their old system, new EQs could cover the old ones.

RSOE EDIS

Their Data is now on another page.

RSOE EDIS List

Warning, some regulars do not like RSOE EDIS and a few of us in the minority think it is fast and uncomplicated. Each to their own.

Looks as if your own uncomplicated service suffered a bit of a dropout there. Does it give location and depth by the way?
