Haven't seen one this big around this area for a while:

M5.3 - 14km WSW of Nereju, Romania 2013-10-06 01:37:21 UTC
Location 45.671°N 26.547°E depth=135.8km (84.4mi)
earthquake.usgs.gov...

this is strange... I can't recall one like that, but I am not so much into that stuff. I just saw it and was suprised. The one in Spain, in Zambia and now this one... they all seem so out of place

I think it was about this time last year, but I definitely remember a high 4-pointer in Romania. I could be mistaken, though, it may have been in a neighboring country to Romania.

A swarm happened last year near Joshua Tree in California, and it appears another is in progress (possibly). There is an old ancient volcano under this area and if you look at the quake maps eastern California is staying active - in areas too close to volcanoes. I wonder - is it a dike intrusion in the case of the Joshua Tree quakes or something else.

Gubbio, Italy
Latitude:43.348924°
Longitude:12.57103°

remember this name, could be something coming there

there were 23 quakes within 40km radius yesterday and it looks like they have been building since the M3.8 on 15 April 2010, yup there have been 11,514 "aftershocks" since that, with nothing bigger, that is just phenomenal from a M3.8.
I tried to draw a graph but my Excel crashed, too many lines.
Just going over the data month by month, but I won't finish it this weekend.
Seems to have picked up since June 2013.

maybe someone should flick the Mayor of Gubbio an e-mail?

I noticed it when I was downloading the September data for Italy, if you go that page and zoom each map in to the area (just south of San Marino) you can clearly see the increase in events, even if they are just M1+

Careful Muzzy! If the Italians find you're the first one to talk about a bigger one and it happens - you might end up in Jail like the scientists! :p

Random quake swarm at Hengill volcano in Iceland. Could be caused by fracking. The volcano is still active, even though it hasn't erupted for nearly 2000 years. Its long overdue though if you look its history, erupted approx every 1000 years, sometimes even every 500 years. That volcano is greatly used by power industry.

Isn't it dangerous to be fracking in an area w/ volcanic activity? Isn't there guidelines?

this!
I think Italy has made life for scientists harder, since nobody will speak out easily anymore without hesitation. Every scientist there will think twice before saying anything or just keep silent.

bob, is that a reference to a Pizza advert?

Gubbio is also known among geologists and palaeontologists as the discovery place of what was at first called the "Gubbio layer", a sedimentary layer enriched in iridium that was exposed by a roadcut outside of town. This thin, dark band of sediment marks the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary, also known as the K–T boundary or K–Pg boundary, between the Cretaceous and Paleogene geological periods about 66 million years ago, and was formed by infalling debris from the gigantic meteor impact responsible for the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. Its iridium, a heavy metal rare on Earth's surface, is plentiful in extraterrestrial material such as comets and asteroids. It also contains small globules of glassy material called tektites, formed in the initial impact. Wiki

This shutdown is causing havoc with my program as it depends on the USGS data for various automated actions which are now failing.

It is because the trace is clipped. The top and bottom of the initial signal has been chopped off.

As stated - all earthquakes.

Isn't it dangerous to be fracking in an area w/ volcanic activity? Isn't there guidelines?

Actually I think it is hydrothermal power rather than fracking. and they do that in Long Valley caldera which is of course a very big volcano and not in the least bit dangerous 'cos the scientists say it is OK to drill into volcanoes. They do it all over the place, like in Naples. Hell it is only a volcano - where is the problem? 'Mericans drill holes all over the place and that isn't dangerous so drilling into a volcano? No problem! The more holes in the planet the better - helps it to breathe.

PS: that is sarcasm by the way

Yep, I meant Hydrothermal power production. They pump cold water inside the volcano and it gets heated up. Hengill is quite "safe" volcano, it doesn't pose any threat. It has never produced more than VEI-2 eruption. Its quite calm. There is even small town of Hveragerði built on top of it. The volcano is greatly used in power production, there is 2 different plants. The volcano type is Shield volcano with fissure vents.

Newberry volcano near Bend Oregon is another that started this. But we know it blew about 1300 years ago and is a big volcano so how can they justify this as a way to save the atmosphere from pollution? If it's safe - completely - a great idea. But it has been shown to induce quakes. If they blow it hurts the atmosphere anyway right?

I think it would be fine if people did not have the capacity for greed. With this newberry one they are going to watch closely - if it begins to produce quakes they will temporarily shut it down. Temporary is the word that is troubling. Whose to say they would stop completely if they ran into some red flags that were not completely understood. My bet is that they wouldn't.

LOL...the sad part is that yup. That pretty much sums it up!

They started doing it in Northern Oregon this past year. Created tons of micro quakes. But hey, that's okay! Becuase its expected....so...its...okay.
