If was going to hit us , It would have done so at 19:00 GMT and that was 6 hours ago .

No doubt some people will already be preparing a thread based on the next asteroid heading our way .
In an uncertain world , it's good to know that some things never change

That's because in an uncertain world. Some people will NEVER SAY DIe. I commend that spirit that believes nothing of what is heard and endeavors to look for themselves.

It's not fear mongering, unless you are in the vicinity of the possible tsunamis.

The OP has brought forth interesting info for us all to discern. Let us discern it like adults then and quit the name calling. You've even, in your haste to belittle the OP, completely gotten the times wrong and you are calling others stupid?

I have no problems with someone creating a thread based off mathematical calculations they have done.

I do have problems with people creating threads off a youtube clip of fearmongering BS that is OBVIOUS hoax.

Credit needs to be given when it's due. You need to discern from BS to thoughtful suggestion, such as the OPs.

If it scares you, don't read it.

The OP was as accurate as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest . If you guys know so much , maybe you should be replacing the REAL scientists at NASA . Can you really see that happening ???

And you're critiquing him when you can't even discern timezones/times correctly? The maths involved in times isn't all that complex.

I can understand why this whole OP has gone over your head and you are calling it fearmongering. Humans generally are afraid of what they do not understand.

Actually I don't see the OP as scaremongering and he was respectful and matter of fact, that's quite a rarity around here. I remember a certain Hubble telescope being made wrongly over a very mundane issue.

That think is 400m in diameter. A far cry from the 10km global killer. Also it seems it did not impact and wont for sure for another 100 years.

The damage estimates if this would hit earth (and it appears that it wont) are really not only dependent on speed, angle and size, but more importantly, what it is made of.

So if an object this size is rock (chondritic) or a more friable material (carbonacious or angrite), then it would lose a lot of mass in a low angle attack and most likely fragment or perhaps detonate about 30 miles up in the atmosphere. The pieces that would hit the earth would fall in an elliptical pattern at terminal velocity, without much damage.

If however, an object of this size is iron, then the outlook would be catastrophic. It would lose very little of it's mass, and would strike the earth at cosmic velocity, with the worse damage at angles approaching the zenith. In a near zenith approach It would blow through the atmosphere like it was not even there and produce a massive crater, perhaps 5 to 10 miles wide.

The Barringer crater, one of earths latest, in Arizona, was caused by an iron. It was the size of a school bus when it impacted, and the crater is almost a mile wide. Statistics show that no living animal survived within a 50 mile radius of this thing , due to the massive shock and heat wave it produced.

We are indeed lucky to not be on this things list this time around, but it is going to be back again, and again, until we probably will meet up with it someday. Hope for earth's sake, that it is a rock.

I can see the NASA scientists being fired because they really don't do anything. NASA is a huge waste of money. The same amount of money spent on NASA, if used in the private sector instead, would have us beyond anything those NASA textbook thumpers could imagine.

Eggs are good.

And generally I agree with you about all the stupid DoomPorn. But I honestly don't think the OP was doomin' and gloomin'.....others in the thread did take off with that idea, but he was just showing data from his personal experiment.

every thread that predicts or hints at some kind of doom/gloom always ends up in people arguing over who fearmongered who or who's sources suck. oh and nothing ever happens.

You come across as overly aggressive towards the OP. He made a few mistakes, granted (and I pointed that out as well), but he at least tried to work the numbers. Not many people on ATS do that. He failed but he tried. A lot of threads about space exploration are just filled with conjecture and detritus in general.

As to fear mongering, this applies more to the crowd here who instead of looking at physics and astronomy (which is hard to do) started speculating how we'll be wiped out. This was predictable. And it's not OPs fault.

Lets avoid the fact that you can't discern times.

Lets then avoid the fact that you were possibly puzzled by all the numbers in the OP, as number comprehension seems to be asking too much of you.

Lets discuss the OP. He was rather calm and not fearmongering. You are the one who is screaming it and that SCREAMS OBVIOUSLY that you are scared.

What area do you live in? If this did in fact happen, are you in danger?

I'm not. I live in South Australia. But your trolling reeks of fear in itself.

The OP has done a respectable job. You've done nothing except criticise, not offering any conclusive evidence of YOUR OWN, just merely criticising the OP.

That's pretty lame to be honest.

Looking at the OP again , I tend to agree . He was just voicing his concerens regarding a possible miscalculation by NASA.
It's the other fear mongering sheeple that have p*ssed me off .

I feared nothing from the start , because I trust the guys who are payed to do their jobs and I chose not to listen to egotistical wannabe scientists .

We get that ok. You'd put your life in NASAs hands and believe anything they told you like God was speaking ok ?We get it.

Heres some news for you guy. Not all of us are comfy with that and you're far beyond trolling on this thread.
That isn't calling you a troll either.

Thankyou.

Thats all I needed to hear.

Apologies for the comments and confrontation. I'm glad you can acknowledge this. I agree others were fear mongering, somewhat.
