I'm a really good cook.............been cooking and baking since 10 (48 years). Have had dozens of people say I should open my own eatery.

Starred your post, think my next hobby will be to make some wine - very cool idea!

Let's see, I'll start out with a simple grape and maybe work up to dandelion.

Any time someone proclaims "there should be a law", freedom dies a little more.

To the OP, why do you feel compelled to control other people?

I hope the mod gives you an extra 1,000 points - best reply on this thread in my opinion.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy

The earliest records of prohibition of alcohol dates back to the Xia Dynasty (ca. 2070 BC–ca. 1600 BC) in China. Yu the Great, the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty, prohibited alcohol throughout the kingdom [1]. It was legalized again after his death, during the reign of his son Qi. In the early twentieth century, much of the impetus for the prohibition movement in the Nordic countries and North America came from Protestant wariness of alcohol.[2] The first half of the 20th century saw periods of prohibition of alcoholic beverages in several countries: 1907 to 1948 in Prince Edward Island,[3] but for much shorter periods in other provinces in Canada 1914 to 1925 in Russia and the Soviet Union 1915 to 1922 in Iceland (though beer was still prohibited until 1989)[4] 1916 to 1927 in Norway (fortified wine and beer also prohibited from 1917 to 1923) 1919 in Hungary (in the Hungarian Soviet Republic, March 21 to August 1; called szesztilalom) 1919 to 1932 in Finland (called kieltolaki, "ban law") 1920 to 1933 in the United States After several years, prohibition became a failure in North America and elsewhere, as bootlegging (rum-running) became widespread and organized crime took control of the distribution of alcohol. Distilleries and breweries in Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean flourished as their products were either consumed by visiting Americans or illegally imported to the U.S. Chicago became notorious as a haven for prohibition dodgers during the time known as the Roaring Twenties. Prohibition generally came to an end in the late 1920s or early 1930s in most of North America and Europe, although a few locations continued prohibition for many more years.

Or should we all just convert to Islam

I noticed your post/thread and have made a new promise to myself not to react/respond to the dribble that has been increasingly surfacing on ATS. There is no question in my mind that ATS is a case study and example of the gradual dumbing down of the population and anyone who has been a member from the beginning, as I in fact have will have noticed that the posts/comments have gotten "Dumb and Dumber" over the years.

This point having been made, I am obligated to go ahead and correct your ignorance. 1) Alcohol Consumption is probably the oldest method of "Self Medication" known to mankind and remains the No# 1 Method of Self medication; people drink to deal with life and while Big Pharma would prefer we all be on one of their drugs and the AMA would prefer we all be seeing one of their Quacks, Alcohol is and will remain the best and cheapest way a person will medicate themselves for dealing with the growing stresses of life. Your comments and comments about Drunk Drivers is another example of the propaganda that people like the OP have swallowed, as Drunk Drivers ARE NOT a big problem on the list of problems and causes of death as the statistics prove:
Heart disease: 616,067
Cancer: 562,875
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 135,952
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 127,924
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 123,706
Alzheimer's disease: 74,632
Diabetes: 71,382
Influenza and Pneumonia: 52,717
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 46,448
Septicemia: 34,828

Note, Alcoholism and Alcohol Related Fatalities are not on the list; because they are way down the list.

No, the answer to all of humanity's problems is as it has been for thousands of years; every few years a few million human beings have to proceeded to killing a few million of their counterparts. It is how one side or the other gets rid of the crud and those who have gotten to big for their britches and started dominating others and telling them how to live and what to do with their lives and bodies.

I will confess, I did not compose or spend much time on this response but those who read what I have said will get my drift and like it or not, natural or man-made, it is time for some culling of the world population but a simply response to your thread on the subject of Alcohol is that "Happy and Self Fulfilled People" don't drink or take drugs.

Alcohol cannot be banned because it's too easy to make at home.

Wanna learn?

I think in theory you are right. But in reality making it illegal will only cause more problems on top of the problems that all ready exist. More power towards ruthless gangs and cartels = more deaths. They tried to ban it in the 1930's but it did not work. I honestly do not think that the Government cared about the Mafia's to much. I would not be surprised if they wear running the mafia's. What if it was their plan to make it illegal to raise money for something then legalize it once again. Like you said the Government makes allot of profit off of it because it causes people to do dumb things. They could make more profit if it was illegal, because another set of charges would be added to the rule book. Sound familiar? They do that with allot of substances. Around the same time alcohol was made illegal allot of other substances wear made illegal as well. Its in the same category as weapons. They exist and their is nothing we can do to make them not exist, we just have to deal with it the best way we can. Our Government does not care for us, our people do not care for others like they should. So for now it will remain a problem.

I get this thread!! I really do and I drink every weekend. I enjoy it but I do it responsibly. Sure manufacturers, the state and stores make money as I end up losing money by wasting it on booze. That is my problem and I am glad it is not illegal. I like to hang out with friends on the weekends after along week of BS work and have a couple of drinks. Yet I do understand that it is a problem for the irresponsible drinkers.

At my job we hired a worker that apparently without recognition just came out from doing sometime. I tried to put the fact that she was a jailbird behind me because she was good company. She then told me the reason why she was in jail and I felt seriously disturbed and shocked. Some people will never learn and that is a shame. Needless to say she got fired for always coming to work late multiple times. I could tell she just loved to party and not care about anything in the world. Recently I checked the weather on my local news website and found this.....

www.khou.com...

This is my ex-coworker and I feel safer driving home from work, running errands, or going to my girlfriends house. I don't wish bad on people but I seriously hope she faces what she deserves.

This is just 1 out of how many in this city.

Wow, that was a bit of a snarky response... You claim you want an intelligent debate about this subject, yet you respond to this observation with sarcasm. You are doing nothing but opening yourself to the very people you wish to avoid... You know exactly what he was asking. Maybe he should have worded his question differently, but you knew the jist of it... Instead, you evaded the statement and went straight to belittling his comment... Classic example of someone who wishes to avoid intelligent debate...

i think people care way too much about this substance, while i beleive it's fine in moderation and it's ok to be enjoyed responsibly, the second you say you want to take someones alcohol away people start getting very worked up. i don't think that prohibition of ANY kind should be enstated i just think that this guy wants alcohol to go away which wouldnt be a bad thing as long as it gradually dissapated due to the decision of many people not to drink it. i am not demonizing people i drink, for i myself do a decent amount, but when it comes to stuff we NEED and DON'T NEED this may be one of them. People will fight to teeth in favor of alcohol just because it's not right to violate someones right of wanting to put whatever they want in their own body, but it is bad for you, even in moderation, granted the amount of damage done in moderation isn't even comparable to little to no moderation, my point being is this; I beleive the truth is that (biologically) we DO NOT need to consume alcohol for any reason whatsoever(again biologically) so where's the hurt in stopping? and some might say, "well hey we all just need a little something to unwind at the end of our repatitive work schedules" but again the TRUTH is that there are other more healthier ways to do this. There is no inherent need for alcohol in the human species it is just something that we have come to love and want, and we would highly benifit from letting go of this attatchment.

but hey if not, it's not that big of a deal, because i dont think it's very likely that alcohol would be around for the rest of our time here on earth, but mebe...

I don't think alcohol should be banned. I'm not a big "fan" of the substance myself - and use it only occasionally.

But...I do smoke. And many think that ought to be banned as well. So I know exactly how it feels to be targeted for a lifestyle choice that is unfavorable to others.

I think if one gets in too deep, there is help that can be sought to overcome addiction or reliance. But I dislike governmental control in areas like this.

OK, this post must have been taken from a basic form letter. I will call it the blanket form letter of all of western societies social ills.

Just take the word "alcohol" and replace it with any one of the worlds other social ills and reread the paragraph. Let us start with these: religion, capitalism, liberals, carbs, high-fructose corn syrup, abortion, fluoride, mercury laced vaccines, medical marijuana, Suicide Girls, rough toilet paper, .................."

Get off of your high horse and start encouraging personal responsibility. Practice what you preach.
