There was this thing called the Prohibition. It failed in such a manner as to make the citizens & Federal Government repeal it.

Prohibition = fail (The Government wasn't making any money on it.)
War On Drugs = Fail (errrr-EPIC WIN! The Government is making money on it....)

I'll chain my inner skeptic back down not.

Driving drunk IS illegal, banned, outlawed. Yet, look how many people are maimed or killed because of drunk drivers.

Your intent doesn't hold water. Bad people will be bad people. Just look at how many people we have in the prisons - excluding the non-guilty ones of course
. Just shows you that banning or outlawing something doesn't make it go away. Good grief, Adam and Eve were "forbidden" to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil......look what happened. Sheesh, it doesn't take a rocket scientist.

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree that there is no reason alcohol should be legal if cannabis isn't, in terms of relative harm caused by the two substances when compared. But if you outlaw a thing, it just guarantees crime will increase, because people aren't going to simply stop doing it because you suddenly say it's illegal. They'll do it anyway, which will create more crime. It'll just end up criminalizing it.

wow i was really starting to think that humanity was moving away from this line of thinking. Thank you AllUrChips
, for destroying that for me. You wanna know how effective making alcohol would be? Look at how effective the drug war is. It isn't. For example, I have quite a few friends who smoke marijuana daily who hold decent, respectable jobs. They're always ready to cheat a urinalysis. So when you ban something you don't stop the people who want to do it. You simply turn them into criminals. Flooding the prisons with more people who shouldn't be there. So please lets stop this nonsense. People have known that prohibition doesn't work for over a century. I believe Abe Lincoln said so himself. and honestly you're 35? Only a very young person or a very old person (both not within optimal brain function) could come to this type of decision rationally. So therefore from my perspective i don't believe you are thinking rationally. Or you're thinking from a very limited perspective filled with lots of identifications(or limitations)

Alcohol is a poison. But so is water if you have to much. Even oxygen can cause you to get high. So if you ask me instead of banning this and that what we should do is educate and help the people that WANT help. But the government makes to much money off making you go to AA meetings, fines, losing your license , bail etc.

I am not sure what your disposition is with a substance that by itself can do no harm with out a decision from said abuser to ingest. But I hope you come to terms with the understanding that stepping on other people's rights will never be the way to go about fixing anything.

Self inflicted harm/pleasure should not be regulated by anybody unless it is infringing on someone else's right.

I thought you were posting against alcohol. I see now you are just trolling. No point in discussing anything else with you. Have a nice day.
Goodbye.

Remember Prohibition ? It did NOT work !

The OP claims he is too young to recall this facet of history....well, we all are for that matter.

But by opening a book and in looking at US history and what we learned from making Alcohol Illegal....IT DIDN'T WORK !

Plain and Simple....

Making anything we put in our bodies Illegal is against the fundamental tenets of the United States of America and our rights to Life , Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Leave the Government and what they deem as is best for us all out of it....

That is not what the government was intended to be for.....but the purpose of Government was to only preserve and protect our rights of ...

Life , Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

......and besides to prevent more bloated Government Bureaucracies what we have also learned in the past and when it comes to overly intrusive Government ...and that is to primarily ....

Keep it Simple Stupid

Peace

I see your point, alcohol is not good for many people in society to ingest. I don't think that making alcohol illegal will work. You see, I live in a small village where alcohol is illegal. People still make "homebrew" and sell it at $50. a gallon. I used to be a police officer, when I first started, my Chief of Police told me that 97% of our communities problems are alcohol related. Alcohol in and of itself is not the problem, it's people and their reaction to this substance, what we need to focus on fixing, if we're going to fix anything, is the cause for alcohol. Society is waist deep in a wide variety of problems that effect eachother like raindrops in a pond, many horrible things that come from alcohol consumption will be enacted through a different avenue. People will still be agressive towards their children, spouses, and self-sabatog will still happen even when alcohol has an illegal status. I see that people drink with MANY different reasonings but I think that the main reason is that they are not entirely contented with their current state of mind, otherwise why drink? Our current state of mind is affected by so many factors that such a superficial act of banning alcohol will not solve the problem. One thing I think would be helpful is to understand that our emotions are a part of who we are, we can not divide ourselves from our emotions, to think that logic and emotion are separate is folly, they BOTH are a part of who we are, once we start emotionally neglecting ourselves in favor of "logical thinking", that's when we have lost respect for ourselves, and when self respect is lacking, things can turn tumultuous. That's when people start looking for blame, they don't think that they are in the wrong because they think that having made the "logical decision" emotions aside makes them smarter and more intelligent than those who show emotion. Well, I used to be an alcoholic, people made it clear that they would be emotionally unavailable, in other words, they don't care, they just want you to shut up and get in your corner to be the good little girl that society accepts. With that sort of attitude, when someone has lost self-respect and others don't respect him, self-worth dwindles and the embers of hope for a stable future are crushed, that's when anything goes.

The problem is that people will have their alcohol legal or not. Prohibition just sent the supplies underground, which in turn fed a whole underworld of gangs etc… Legalization was the less of the two evils!

It would certainly be nice to have a world devoid of alcohol, but that is just not possible.

Heck if they banned it everyone would be able to make booze its so easy.
1x 5 gallon brew bag
6x cartons of five alive
a bit of sugar
a bit of brewing yeast
mix it all in the bag top up with warm water

put bag in a warmish place on the back of a door wait till it goes clear, drink untill you pass out lol

can swap five alive for um-bongo www.youtube.com... (for all us Uker's over 25)
In fact why didnt they just make Um Bongo with booze in it?

Your definitely not going to be lashed, it is a very logical post, and you nailed it. The reason it is legal is because local, state and federal governments make huge money on the taxes associated with alcohol, as well as tobacco. While it is true that anyone can be an alcoholic, from your street corner junkie to the high level executive you spoke of, it knows no socioeconomic boundary. Very thoughtful post

My theory is that it is legal because it helps keep people just drinkin the stress away, and raises unimagineable amounts of revenue. Most crimes happen because of alcohol. It keeps cops employed and cities make money off of the court costs and especially in the DUI department. But at what cost? All the lives lost, families broken, abused children and spouses. If not for money, it would not be legal. Anyhow, Ill take my lashings now

PS the title comes from the very wise Homer J. Simpson-

So... Where will it stop? Once you ban alcohol from the shelves, do we move onto candy, sugar products, high salt content products, etc..? 'Coke a Cola' is used to burn rust off of car parts, so you can imagine what it does to your insides.

Do you want to live in a freed society, or do you want to live in a nanny state?

There are no other choices.

Free society where you do what you desire, or a heavily regulated society that restricts behavior.

Its that simple.
