Magnitude 7.3 - EASTERN TURKEY

How sad! Guys I just woke up and checked it out....Earthquake-report.com is reporting this as a really devastating quake!!!

We are possibly looking at thousands killed....

How many volcanoes surround this one? Are there any "super volcano's" to be aware of?

Well said Mike! I remember seeing the Haiti quake coming across and brushed it off as a 7, then being involved in that thread quite heavily as the death toll KEPT rising, was a very big wake up call for me personally, to never brush off a quake until reliable reports of no widespread damage are in! I really hope there isn't much from this quake, but like you said, a lot of the buildings aren't all that safe in normal conditions with the speed and quality they're built at, I can't help but think we will see a fair few casualties.

You won't need to woken up. If you sleep through that then you're most likely dead.

3rd thing I do every morning is check the news & this wasn't on any news site or channel at 5am EST, if it was I don't know HOW I missed it. Saw the threads here & started perusing news websites. The local authorities are stating 25 apartment buildings & 1 dormatory have collapsed as well as gas stations & hotels. Numerous dead & buried under the rubble, they're in dire need of medics & assistance. The sad thing is, in addition to the obvious devastation, it will take some time to organize rescue teams & outside aid.

It is a confirmed 7.2 earthquake .

Loss of life is estimated to be between 500 to 1000 .

Aftershocks are expected and public are advised to stay outdoors .

Airport runway is said to be damaged too but not confirmed .

yeah ive only been following earthquakes for a while but the aftershocks are going insane... can any experts clarify if this is a little odd? and all the aftershocks are very shallow

Just FYI the estimates come from the USGS PAGER report and are computer generated on the basis of past events in the given area. Not quite a guestimate as there is a past factual basis for it, but also not always accurate.

Alerts are graded Green Yellow and Red. This one is a RED alert.

No the aftershock pattern is fairly normal for the area concerned.

You would probably expect aftershocks up to around 6.2/6.3 so there may be another biggish one to come, unless that was the 5.9. The pattern will only become abnormal if it does not tail off after a time.

Now here is an odd one just happened. A mag 3.4 on the Turkish/Iranian border. Hope this does not indicate a migration, or as diamondsmith has suggested an extension of the rupture to create a much bigger quake with the 7.2 as a foreshock.



Need to get hold of a fault map for the area to see if this is a possibility.

The Seismic station that I first got information from has gone off line. It registered the 7.2 and has stopped since. Most annoying

KIV.II.00.BHZ.2011.296 This one is still working but is too far away to be useful today as the screen scale is being swamped by the 7.2 so nothing smaller is showing.

Before the 7.3,for weeks we have small ones suggesting that is cracking,so it was obvious that a big 2 will come,the problem is that the Einstein theory could be right and a fast shift of the tectonic plates just begin,in 520 ad in the area Turkey islands- Dodecanesse Islands it was 14 days earthquakes and one big island sunk so.....
