The point though is the reasoning
behind it. I think AJ nailed this one on it
being anti-protesting propaganda.
Subliminal not so much
Anti-protesting message very much so
good catch.

The only reason you see it is because you wear told about it before you knew it was there. Think about it in the point of view as a average TV watcher. So far you have watch 1hr of tv so your all ready sucked in and not paying attention. If any thing it made it strong. Notice how you can only read the full message for a split second then it shows a man standing in front of the sign. Just because it was not a quick flash does not mean it has no effect. If any thing its probably more effective as long as it does not stand out and it does not really stand out compared to the rest of commercial it blends in well.

The reason it's considered subliminal is because it is flashed for a fraction of a second - too fast for the average stupid American to read it.

You'd think sharpie would want more protesting - they'd sell a lot more sharpies.

Wow, the Sharpie commercial was pretty bad, but I was even more shocked by the Ron Paul sticker in the meth lab book while they were talking about Hitler!!!

I love Breaking Bad, but I am a much bigger supporter of Ron Paul and the liberty movement...I am more than a little disappointed that they felt the need to stoop to that level.

Get the POINT. Sharpie a pen, pencil, marker. A writing tool. Making a point, A POINT. Sharpie, sharp or smart. Put it all together and you get A SMART POINT. Added to the video and what was on it. I would say that they do not like protesters. These are the people raising ALARM BELLS on all issues. Now they do not like that,oh no. This is how the ELITE talk back and forth to one another, thru sublimital messages. You see and hear them everywhere. These people think that they are more SHARPIE than you and I.
and that is a fact. It proves the arogance of such peoples mind set.

If this is considered "subliminal" then so should all other advertisements on television.

We should have ALOT more protesters with signs up and talking about issues we all have. Maybe our country will get better if we do so. Start voiceing our oppinions on what is going on and who is doing the wrong more often.
And more importantly, put them all in jail where they belong. Not in some special treatment jail either, give them the same treatment we all get. I think we should go back to hanging in public.

Wow!! I spent 10 minutes yesterday at wallmart looking at all the sharpie markers. It must have been a subliminal message or maybe the big giant computer that runs our existence had a bug.

I dont feel like reading all the pages but did anyone notice the sign to the left of the stop protesting didn't that sign say LIES?

that scene with the flower children hippies and the peace signs makes it look like protesting is a non peaceful thing to do which is wrong..

I do not use sharpies I buy cheaper pens that work just as good, but probably the company that makes the pens is owned by sharpie for all i nkow and all the pens are made in the same place just with different names that how most things work now days

At first glance I was peeved , however I'll withhold my personal feeling to play devils advocate for a minute.
Smart marketing taps into the "social conscious" so to speak, obviously because they want to appeal to the broadest market . Social uprising, protests and movements are taking place and of course business is going to move in to capitalize . It makes sense to appeal to where they can foresee good business.
On the other hand , a smart marketer would try to stay as politically neutral as possible and not try to send any messages that sway one way or another , hence the conflicting images where they seem to promote protesting and at the same time, subtly send the opposite message. In a sense the commercial is what you make of it , someone on the other end of the spectrum wouldn't care what the signs say , and would contend that sharpie is promoting protesting.

No. That's not what I saw. The commercial said.

"What would life be like without sharpies"

and it was giving examples of life without sharpies.

STOP PROTESTING

That's life without Sharpies.

That's how I took it.

Hmm...interesting, consider the banner when coupled with the narration: Right when you first see the banner the narrator states "no purpose" the next banner you see is "now" so stop protesting (banner) no purpose (narration) now (another sign) all starts at 10 on the vid.

i thought there were more levels to it then just what alex pointed out...I also watched the ad on its own first.

the voice over says "there'd be no purpose" followed by the sign "stop protesting" followed by "yes" "stop protesting" "now" and the peace symbol.

there is also a sign later on that say "put me in coach" which personally I've never seen at a sports match and 2ndly the words put & me are dim & washed out while the words me & coach stick out like a sore thumb...

so you have

NO PURPOSE... STOP PROTESTING... YES STOP PROTESTING NOW... COACH ME.

Peace,
-TF

its not in your face unless you are actually watching for it. Does the average american give 100% focus to detail on every commercial that rots their brains every 30 seconds? No they do not. Our stupor or vegitative state is what they expect the majority of americans to do when their favorite show stops because a commerical. and the fact that its more than 0.5 seconds long does not mean its not subliminal. subliminal messaging is big buisness and you encounter it everyday; whether its anti theft measseges in the mall music or the naked ladies hidden in the ice cube pictures you dont seem to notice on the coca-cola vending machines. The fact that there are no laws governing the subliminal industry doesnt mean they are not real. It gives every industry and government the freedom beyond your imagination to covertly control you.

double think.
Freedom of expression & true peace equates to keeping quiet and being passive. and using bright pens to show everyone that you're not boring. you're lively colourful & creative, and just in case today you're not feeling it, here are half a dozen ways to use our pens to appear like you are what you believe....now that you've seen this ad...

OP went about this all wrong, it's an ad (which was also made before the protests) that is asking what if there was no self expression,,,put 2 and 2 together and you have??

I'm more concerned with the last frames in the
commercial. What's up with the lizards eating human brains ?
3rd pict. is that backpack suppose to be a lizard snake ?

This is why we shouldn't watch TV

oh and another thing worth mentioning is the fact that sharpie never needed commercials to sell their product before. its pratically a household name. perhaps they were "coached" into releasing a commercial advertising their product with a 3rd parties financial backing. It will not surprise me if you see other big product brand names running these ads that have a negative connotation to any type of uprising. These commercials will most likely only run this year due to outside financing.

no, you seem to not understand what subliminals are and that this is not a thread about this ad 'at face value' but rather about the underlying mechanisms of this ad and why it works and what methods they are using.

I too noticed this and found it rather odd or just awesome timing ...

But looking at the date of the video upload being Jul 18, 2011 and Wikipedia says that OWS was just an idea floating around at the time. It also goes on to say protests didn't start until September 17. Just makes me wonder ...
