Beijing develops pulse weapons

www.washingtontimes.com

China's military is developing electromagnetic pulse weapons that Beijing plans to use against U.S. aircraft carriers in any future conflict over Taiwan, according to an intelligence report made public on Thursday.

Portions of a National Ground Intelligence Center study on the lethal effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and high-powered microwave (HPM) weapons revealed that the arms are part of China’s so-called “assassin’s mace” arsenal - weapons that allow a technologically inferior China to defeat U.S. military forces.

EMP weapons mimic the gamma-ray pulse caused by a nucle

This type of technology isn't new, but it DOES cost a TON!

China wouldn't be building this just for the heck of it. They are much more pragmatic than to spend that kind of money on a nasty little toy that they do not plan to use.

Do you really, honestly believe that this is to defend against Taiwaan actions by the US? These strike me as offensive weapons rather than defensive.

The big question is: Are they planning to kick things up with Taiwaan? Or are they planning to make a run at us???

I think they would like to be ready when the for when the poop hits the fan.
China pretty much owns the U.S. and when it's time to pay the piper it could lead to a messy situation.

Well, if we default on our debt to them....

I guess it would be considered a "re-posession" at that point!

Nothing, but historically, gaining nothing from a war rarely deters the tyrants from starting one, whether the US or China strikes first.

More importantly, why tell the world?
Why not just keep it quiet?

Scare tactics? To who?
We're spoon fed so much B.S., I just wonder what the real motive to announce it is.

Why not call our military and tell them?

I think it's just posturing.

China's not stupid, they're not going to bite the hand that feeds them. I don't know if they're building it for a specific purpose, but I think it's strange with how secretive China is that they're openly admitting this. My guess is that the U.S. already has this weapon.

Because the most feared weapon that can be used on the continental US is an EMP. It would do more damage to take out our infrastructure, than it would to drop a low yield nuke on a city. If our economy and infrastructure is gone, so is everything else. It would be like taking a step back into the early 1800's.

Fear mongering scared Americans that cannot handle being not the number 1 of the world.

American's talk about a balance of power and then criticise other's for rebalancing the power to be more balanced away from the USA's dominatnt position.

If America doesn't want these places to develop this stuff, the US should stop doing it in the first place.

Seriously, stop acting like spoilled children/brats and act EQUAL in the world not the BE ALL AND END ALL of it.

If you want to act that way and be an American, do it in your own home, not ours.

Thats true but i would think they would go after the power grid. probably take alot of emp missles to take outthewhole of the us.
I not going to worry about this

Actually it would only take a couple. It was proven a little while back that without much effort the entire eastern seaboard could be wiped out by overloading certain points of the grid causing a domino collapse. The same could be done across the entire country with little effort, just by forcing the system to overload.

ETA: I am not saying to worry about this, just pointing out that it can be done with little effort.

Perhaps the information is being brought out in an effort to garner support and appropriations for increasing military spending/research would be my first guess.

I find it interesting that they are not saying much about China's expenditures on a project like this (ie they spent X amount in 2005 and they are now spending XX amounts on the project).

Taking a quick look around led me a new source though - National Security Archive at George Washington Univeristy National Secuity Archive

I love how this article describes china as the scum of the earth, constantly referring to torture, nuclear warheads, and attacking US military.

I personally think EMPs are the weapon of the future, and sure it sucks China's making them, i seriously doubt China has any intention to mess with the United States, they make a lot of money from them.

This 'release' is theater.

First of all EMP weapons research has been ongoing for decades, both here and in China. Second, the technology to construct EMP-proof or EMP-shielded equipment has already been undertaken commercially, so the 'threat' of this kind of weapon is only significant from the perspective of 'unprepared' forces.

For some reason the article in the lists numerous nefarious reasons for China's research; saving for last the following:

... or the tests may have been conducted to determine safety or shielding standards for military personnel or weapons.

Gee..., ya think!? I mean that IS the excuse we GAVE for our research. But no, China couldn't be following that path, that wouldn't be evil enough for the ongoing fear mongering ....

The Military Industrial Complex, among the largest of cash cows for the transnational financial cartel; is coming to the end of it's "blank check" days and they know it.... so military threats will be projected into our minds repeatedly... until our politicians can "sell" the "dire need" for more and more expensive half-developed under-performing and price-creeping technologies to oblige us to pay for.

Unfortunately, too many of us have already bought into the underlying foundation of the matter which is that it is nations, and not the banking monopolies of the world, who cause the frictions between us.

Divide and conquer... it's their most sheenesque ("winning") strategy.....

Heck, I even had them on my Asteroids Game 25 years ago.

Exellent responces.
