They are not dictating what they wear. They are showing that this is not acceptable in day to day ''human'' living. How is it normal for a human being to walk around covering the only features we use to communicate with one another, its socially ignorant and socially wrong for such women to have to live their lives that way. You think most women that wear such facial masks like it? I'm sure a vast majority of those women wish they could just express their feelings but can't because they would be disowned by their families.

For whatever reason they wear it, who are we to dictate that an item of clothing is wrong? If i want to walk about in a ninja suit and it makes you uncomfortable then why should i care? That's your issue not mine. I should have the choice to wear that or a ghost costume or a mask or whatever.

Who are you to say some woman don't like it? We make assumptions based on our cultural and religious differences. The truth is is even one woman likes it and wants to wear it then she should have the right to do that in our apparently 'free' society.

I say this as a women myself.

Seems we seem to be making decisions for these women based on assumptions and some seem to be willing to protest and get fined for the right to be able to wear what the hell they want.

It should not be allowed when driving, in a bank etc. But if she wants to wear it walking down the street minding her own business, telling her she can't makes our society equally as oppressive as the ones we think we're better than.

Here in the UK we have had our 'British' civil liberties eroded for years.

What goes around comes around !

Maybe we should also do the same in this country.

Take for example hanging an England flag out of your window.
In some parts of this country, youd be stabbed for doing that.

and I am not joking either.

I hear that mate, my dad had a 20 foot flag hanging outside the house out a window, oh guess who knocks on the door asking it to take it down?? A Muslim police officer how ironic!!!!!!

Off topic I know sorry, I heard a interview with a Muslim, they said if the UK enforced that they would leave the country..

Please please enforce this in the UK.

And look, at the end of the day France is only fining them, unlike Muslim countries which stone women for wearing the wrong clothing!

If you are so hung up on people should be allowed wear what they want and blab la then go to many of the Muslim countries that ban people wearing what they want, go preach to them and see how long you last.

See this is the hypocrasy that makes me laugh and cry simultaneously.

We live in a FREE country. This is supposed to be BETTER than those countries that dictate what people wear. That's why people want to live here.

I'm confused as to how Muslim countries dictating clothing and punishing people for not wearing what is acceptable to them is any worse than us doing the same.

Surely this makes us just as bad as those backward countries so you should be against it????

This ban is rediculous. It affects a total of 232 women in France who wear it for religous purposes and is part of their culture...I will be very upset if it becomes an issue here. If it does, and if we are in the business of taking away freedom from people, then I am going to push for bans on sweaty obese people wearing tank tops or going shirtless in public, teenagers wearing their jeans below their butts and Lady Gaga wannabes...this is what is offensive to me.

and please don't equate the Burqa to Muslim women in general, it is only worn by a small sect of Islam from Afhganistan/Pakistan. Many Muslim women do wear the Hadith, which just covers the head but leaves the face uncovered.

This ban is silly and culturally insensitive. While I can certainly understand the security risks associated with such identity concealment, the fact is this ban is just going to alienate people. I'm sure that minimizing security risk isn't the only motive either - I think that some at least are afraid of whatever does not conform to their own cultural identity.
Multiculturalism isn't merely about the coexistence of different races, it is about accepting, even welcoming, cultural variation.

It is no different than laws against nudity. Completely covering ones self is an extreme form of dress, and common sense laws that ban such dress are exactly what is needed.

It is the same thing as laws that prevent people from walking around with clothes that state foul language, or show sexually deviant images.

The burqa is an affront to western views on women, and for no other reason it should be banned.

We shouldn't be forced to accept blatant sexism anymore than any other form of bigotry.

These ghastly forms of dress piss people off, and they have a right to be pissed off, and all those who claim different are the ones trying to force their ideals on others.

Who is pissed off? and how many women in Burqa's have you seen walking around...and when is covering your whole body an affront to women more than women walking around showing more skin than they should be?

Like I said, it is a very small sect and is really a non-issue. I get that you are mad because you saw it on TV, but when has a women in a Burqa in your neighborhood ever ticked you off?

The guys who have their wives running around in those extreme forms of dress are the ones who are culturally insensitive.

It is a blatant slap in the face that says, screw your western beliefs.

People are only going to put up this constant sneering at their beliefs for so long, and then they are going to take action.

Where are the people that want to allow non-muslim women to wear what they wish in a Muslim nation?
I mean, the Muslims women, they even show their ankle and they get beat. It seems all the PC liberal non-Muslim panderers want to say everyone must bend over for them to do what they want, but they don't want to champion the rights of non-muslims, or even muslim women who wish not to dress like that, and in a Muslim nation as well. Now, if they wanna wear a bag on their head in their homes, that's their right, but in society,we can't hide our faces, anyone. Put on a full ninja suit, with the face cover, and go to a job interview or the bank. And then go to Saudi Arabia with a women friend, and demand her right to dress as to her culture while there, and see how that works out. Report back to us and let us know.

Like I said, it is a very, very, very, miniscule group that do this...

Do you know what I feel is much more culturally insensitive, blatant slap to my western beliefs and christian values...Jersey Shore. Just saying...

Who is pissed off? Everyone who is not a Muslim who has women in their lives that they love.

I see plenty of Muslim women walking around covering as much of themselves as possible. They look miserable.

If the guy is dressed like the woman, then I have respect, but if the guy is in a t-shirt and jeans, and the woman is dressed up like she comes from the third world, it makes me angry, and pretty much everyone else who has respect for women. Many people try to tell themselves they should be tolerant, but inside they are insulted. Most people simply see the burqa as a straight up sign of a backward culture.

One thing is becoming evident, the whole concept of cultural tolerance is being tossed out the window by this continuing conflict, and white guilt is fading away.

Some people are just using this to prop up their own anti-islamic agenda.

They want Western leaders to do what slobodan melosovic did in Bosnia.

Ok so why not ban those girls that wear tube tops and skirts up their arses at the weekends? I'm seriously offended by seeing that. I'm offended at seeing 13 year old schoolgirls with skirts like belts leaving nothing to the imagination every morning waiting for the bus. Lets ban that.

I'm a western woman and these are affront to my views on ALL woman, be they western or not.

But i have a right to my views and they have a right to the view that the look good in whatever they choose to wear.

Allowing a country and government run by mostly men do dictate what a woman can and can't wear IS blatant sexism.

If i can walk about with my arse and tits hanging out in public and that's acceptable, then they can dress like ninjas all they want. Anything else is biggotry.

The way a lot of people dress in this country piss me off but i'm never gonna think i'm so high and mighty that i can actually ban their clothing and remove their choice to wear it.

You are enforcing your ideals on others by using a law to dictate an item of clothing. That's just stupid.

Once again, how many women have you seen in a Burqa? There are less than a thousand in the US.

The West has become too multicultural for anything Big to happen and Islam covers nearly all races.

Not forgetting the huge interests the West has in Islamic lands.

I agree with you on Jersey Shore, and lots of others as well.

Then again, that show is meant to be a slap in the face.

I defend your right to feel insulted by the way the people act on Jersey Shore.

if it's that minuscule, what's the problem?

eradicate it once and for all.

don't let it get a chance to grow.

I live near a Jr high, and I never see girls dressed like that.

And, from all understanding, it is culturally acceptable to to frown upon overly provocative dress.

On top of that, showing too much is in fact illegal, as it should be. Laws should be written to prohibit extreme ways to dress.

Why should it be any less acceptable to frown upon women dressed up like nuns.
