her drivers licencse? the human face is like the prints on your thumb. thats like saying my religion says I can be anonymous all the time anywhere. Even when authoritues prompt me to identity myself. Thats going to far.

Yes, it was a true story a few years ago. Now of course they could just use iris scans like in the movie Minority Report, but then why should we have to do that just so women can cover most of their face?

Post after post trying to re-affirm the idea that this is about 'east vs west', completely ignoring the fact that the niqab is not "Muslim", nor is it a garment worn by a significant portion of the population.

Those who benefit from our division are the ones who perpetuate these lies of a culture war.

The problem is they expect to be able to go anywhere and force their ideas on others. I am also fairly religious, so I take this issue seriously. Not so long ago a woman tried to insist on wearing a face covering for her drivers license pic. I mean cmon, get real. I do not like the police state but this is an overt attempt at subverting other cultures.

...insist we accept Sharia practices. Why else would they leave a country that forces women to cover their faces then demand other countries accept this as common?

I'm just trying to understand. Say someone wants to take a picture of themselves with a veil covering their face, how is that subversive?

I see your point with regards to that person asking for an exception but no one is expecting you or me to do anything differently. At the end of the day, religious laws or practices do not supersede common law.

Have you ever been stopped for speeding? Ever goto court and contest the ticket? With regards to this example, a law was violated and we are asking for an exception. Ultimately the court will decide whether or not to grant one. I dont see how this is subversive.

You are right! I also like to experience exotic and unusual environments. I just don' want them to come and subvert mine!

That IS my point. That they expect to be the exception in our rules and laws. That is the subversive nature of Sharia. It is for the purpose of subverting Western ideals. I don't care if they wear a burkha, but to demand to have the drivers license pic with a face covering defeats the purpose of it. I remember a time when we didn't need to have pics on our license. Why should they have the exception and not us? They also apparently can get waivers on healthcare. Do you think that is fair?

They are allowed to drive wearing a burqa or a niqab?

In my neck of the woods that was banned years ago in the wake of several accidents where the face veil covered their eyes.

Also mugshots could be a problem in case of imprisonment

It is obvious. It is being allowed to some degree. Just like both Republican and Democrats are allowing illegals to live here and be referred to as "undocumented workers" while attaining such benefits as free emergency care, food stamps, and free education for their children. Opposing forces are like two sides of the same coin. That is the way it has been described.

Further Edit - Ironically the Algerians I refer to were probably in the worst of places as they were completely seperated from their homeland and loved ones, and also to a certain degree badly treated by the French themselves. They are more commonly refered to as the "Pied Noir", literal translation black foot, which I presume comes from the fact that due to their skin tone, they have "black" feet.

The Pieds-Noirs were the french people living in Algeria. You're speaking of the Harkis, these native algerians who were fighting for the Algeria to stay french... Maybe because the french colonisation was less tough than told since.

Hmm you bring up a good point. She lost the court case, but it does make one wonder. I don't think it was the burkha type, but the one that just shows the eyes. Another one insisted that she be allowed to wear this working for Disney, and this was after she had signed a document stating she would comply with Disney standards. So you see, it's not like they can't just get a different job.

A heavy jacket does not cover the face, which is what we usually use as identification on drivers licenses, passports, etc. Please do not use such an obtuse idea as an argument. Frankly I do not care if women wear this garment, as long as they don't try to force me, or force laws here. I believe France would not have resorted to this if there was not an issue related to it. Let women wear burkhas, saris or whatever, but if they expect to change our laws or other such cultural things, the tolerance thing needs to be revisited. I did notice a marked increase in full body covering(no burkhas yet) in my area immediately after Obama was elected. Maybe it was just an odd coinkydink.
Also, have you ever had your photo taken for a passport? You are not supposed to smile because it ruins the face recognition. Why should I have to deal with face recognition software and not them?

I do kind of like some of the new burkhinis for swimming, kind of reminds me of the beach in the Edwardian era, and even western suits are starting to bring out more coverage for people who want it. I do however want the freedom to let my legs absorb as much Vitamin D as my face.

How can there ever exist any happiness in a world where the smile is outlawed? How can we ever send that small simple gesture that can change the entire course of a day out if there is a wall in front of it? By blocking our facial expressions we are cutting off our humanity from the world.

"Among humans, it is customarily an expression denoting pleasure, happiness, or amusement, but can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety, in which case it is known as a grimace. Cross-cultural studies have shown that smiling is a means of communicating emotions throughout the world."

en.wikipedia.org...

I guess I will just have to smile twice as hard and twice as big at everyone I meet tomorrow and I will think about all of the female slaves kept by their male masters who will never know the joy of spreading love to a stranger with such a simple gesture.

Ban on wearing face veils to come into effect April despite concerns

Glad to see the issue is finally getting some discussion going.

I hear two are arrested and others protesting.

I say GO BACK to the country of your belief and wear anything you want - THERE!

Toronto wants Sharia law, at least from this article point of view.
www.thestar.com...

some 2,000 or so in a population of 5 million Muslims — who wear the veil. The claim that this vulnerable mini-minority somehow threatens France’s 62 million people is risible. Yet this isn’t the first targeting of Muslim practices. Years ago France banned Islamic head scarves in classrooms. Even so, Islamophobia shows no sign of being appeased.

Even so, Islamophobia shows no sign of being appeased

Islamophobia?
the fact that there are more mosques been build in toronto is pretty scary or the fact that more immigrants are coming from the middle east been unchecked by airport security for terrorism records or criminal records.

Islamophobia is a real threat facing eupore now, if toronto doesn't see it when then will toronto ever see the threat?
Muslim woman in veils here in toronto stores are scaring the kids making them cry.

I am surprised toronto star is defending Islam, i wonder will they defend Sharia law?

Sup guys

As a muslim (chill, don't be all hostile with me aiight) all i can say is.

This law isn't a big deal. To me, at least.

The wearing of burqa actually depends on the countries of where the wearer is from imo. It's not compulsory in Islam to wear a burqa. Heck, this style of covering the whole women's body even pre-dates Islam. To put it simply, cut things short and in conclusion, the Koran states that muslim women should dress in such a way as not to incite lust when viewed by other men.

And from there...well, all the 'technicalities' and interpretations and whatnots start to come in.

To my fellow muslims reading this; just turn the other cheek. It's just the face. It's not as if they passed the law for muslim women to wear tank tops and shorts....and that imo would just be retarded for a law
. Furthermore, no matter which country you go to, you still must at least respect their laws and custom.

I am so pumped up about this. Finally a place has the balls. I think it was a well planned out strategy to take over a country in the first place.

"lets say it's our religion to wear masks, then if a nation goes to war with us. they will never know who's attacking."

I bet the women love the freedom also.

I don't approve of this. What? we're afraid its a terrorist under there? They could just as easily dress in ed hardy and look american.
People should be entitled to whatever they believe, and they should be allowed to travel wherever they want. This is our planet and it belongs to them just as much as us.

I'm just surprised after spending years in school and learning about how much the French were cowards, and now all of a sudden taking matters into their own hands...I'm quite impressed with what I'm seeing...Changes are good
