I was driving home from class one day in my fathers truck. The man I saw on the corner every day before I got onto the interstate came up and sprayed some crap on my window. I tried to stop him, and then he asked for spare change. I had $1.50 at the time that I planned to purchase a double cheeseburger with. So I gave it to him because I thought he might need it more. Then he said, "WTF am I going to buy with this?". I said, "A double cheeseburger." He cussed me out and I drove off.

A few days later he hit me up at the same light. At least he attempted to, but as he approached the car I hit him with a fountain drink in the face.

Maybe in the USA you have a different breed of beggars from what we have here! But y'all come across as a bunch of heartless creeps... you all have stories about homeless people being on drugs, aggressive, thieves etc.
Don't you feel ashamed that your economy is so munted that you have these people at all?

I've given money for food and coffee to the one or two we see here in New Zealand, and have seen them spend it on - surprise, food and coffee!

Are you people just trying to justify your selfishness?

I stopped giving most to beggars a long time ago.

At one street corner in Dallas, saw a beggar walk down the street from her interesection, pull out a cell phone, and drive off in a Lincoln Navigator.

Now it is food or nothing.

Being a cab driver, I cant help but notice a bit of the underworld while driving around town.

For this particular post I will be referring to the guy that stands on the corner with his homeless and hungry sign.

We have all seen them. Some of us donate, some of us look the other way. Some of us are grateful that isn't us, perhaps even a few of us smug about it.

Anyhow, the long and short of this post is the fact that I do see these people every day, same place, same sign.

So, today I decided I wanted to work on my yard, get it ready for spring which has finally decided to arrive. I realized being somewhat hampered, I needed some help. Usually I have some kids around, but today I didnt. So, I thought I'll go see if one of those hungry folks would like to make some money helping me. You know, try and give back to the community, yada yada.....

Of I go in search, too the corners I know. Murphy's law, they weren't around until my last choice. After parking and walking a ways to talk to this fella, this is pretty much how the conversation went...

me: "Want to make $20.00 bucks?
him: Doing what?
me: raking leaves
him: How many?
me: $20.00 bucks worth
him: I can make $20.00 bucks standing here in a hour
him: How big is the yard?
me: Small
him: I don't have to bag them or anything just rake?
me: Yes you have to bag them
him: No Thanks

Now I have to be honest and admit I was wondering what the heck is wrong with is guy? Im offering a honest way to make a few bucks, because after all, he is hungry, ( though Im trying to figure that out too, as he can make $20.00 a hour standing on corner, even if he only did it 4 hours, which makes $80.00. Which if he did 4 days a week, would be $320.00.) How can someone be hungry with that kind of money?

I guess I wouldn't leave my post either. If I put a 40 hour week in doing that I would have $800.00.

Enough on that point, the thing is there were two other guys working the other corners. So I presented the same thing. Long story short, one had a gimp knee, the other one, a bad shoulder. Okay, if you say so, I'll believe.

I will say, I can imagine there may have been a trust factor. I mean I did just walk up out of the clear blue. I could have had my own trust factors being a woman and picking up a stranger as well. I decided to try and get past that. Stupid? Maybe... but I have my senses.

I guess I am posting this because I was shocked in a odd way . I'm not even sure what shocked me more. The fact someone is claiming to be hungry, but wont do some honest work to make a few bucks, Or, The fact this same person makes more then I do standing on a corner.

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this picture?

Most homeless people are mentally ill. What your describing is a beggar/pan-handler aka scammers. People who pretend to be poorer then they are.

I expect we are going to see a lot more of this type of thing, where whole families are destitute because both Mom and Dad lost their job while POTUS is running our country into the ground. And it will be no fault of their own. This is being done by design! They want to ruin everything we built up over two hundred years, and run all private enterprise into the ground. This is why POTUS is nationalizing huge whole sectors of society and growing govt more and more. What will they do when there is no one left to sustain things with their labor?

Many are still not aware of the significance of thread, but fortunately, some do.

2000 years ago, a mortal being taught a simple truth. 2000 years later, despite our evolution and progress, as well as continued tirades from clergies, priests, legislatives who claim to follow the bible or the Koran or holy scriptures from different lands, and even bible belt oath swearers in US, it seemed many could not, had not, or even wanted to, comprehend a simple truth.

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him a day. Teach a man how to fish, and you will feed him a lifetime." This was what the Great Man taught.

Teaching is not just some imposed upon attendance at classes. To truly teach, it requires time and more critically patience, plenty of it, something that we ordinary masses may not be able to spare as we each have families to take care of.

The onus for such noble guidiance will have to come from our pool of resources, to help others as a society, so that NONE gets left behind.....

That line of thinking may have worked 2000 years ago but not so in the modern world(1st World Countries, in general, but others). With the strong regulation of such things as hunting seasons, fishing seasons, and most types of foraging...that logic just does not work in the modern 21st century. I mean...where I live, I can get arrested for taking sand from a beach -- this is in Florida. I don't know any of the statutes or laws of the other 49 States and territories. They could be wildly different. However, I have a distinct feeling that they are not. Observe a national or state park, for instance. In most respects a person cannot "take" the majority of life in said locales due to local/federal laws.

Obviously, you could teach these skills to certain individuals but this is not without ramification. Why risk going to jail for survival when a person can "lobby" for spare change? Personally, I would much rather be a homeless living on the streets compared to living in a county/state/federal jail. Again, modern national authorities will not put up with "homeless" people helping themselves to local food strains. For the "homeless" person one of the only ways out of this cycle is accepting cash and only cash. I can understand why some people would be reluctant to accept commodities other than cash.

You don't get to be homeless until you have burned through all your friends and relatives, I'm not saying they're bad, just that they have serious problems often revolving around substance abuse but more often they are unpleasant characters. You can't blame the substance, we all know loads of folk who do way too much drink and drugs but it doesn't make them ass holes.

Rake your own yard.
The guy has right to say no.

You miss the point entirely. She was giving the guy an honest job. Even FDR's workfare programs made more sense than just giving people money for nothing.
See this is the thing though, Americans are very often the most generous people around. We always open our pocketbooks for starvng children and victims of tsunamis. But when the govt is in the business of taking more and more of our paychecks, this then becomes a confiscation of our own honest paycheck. And corrupt politicians realize Americans will keep giving to help the poor. So they just keep taking under the guise of do-gooding.

This is an over statement, your church group might buy into it and tell each other how they all do such a wonderful job with their waist of time charities, they are part of the reason there are so many problems, I despise charity workers, it shows me that the government is not doing its job properly and these rich so called charity workers are taking a real job from someone that actually needs the work and money in many instances.

Lets be honest here Americans have more homeless and greater social issues than most countries, they cannot even clean up their own back yards but have basically polluted everyone else's as well. Don't pat your selfs on the back when your politicians are as evil and corrupt as ours, or while you have starving children and people without homes and your system does not work for most of those that depend on it, or while you are using the jails as revenue collection for the rich.

Sure life is great when you earn big dollars and feed some starving kid in Africa for 20 cents a day, while you spend more money in an afternoon getting your dog washed. It seem kind of hypocritical. It is kind of like these two rich scum that live in a 10 bedroom house with six toilets and 4 bathrooms, that run every light in the house yet drive a toyota prius truly pathetic. I am not having a go at you personally but denial seems to work to much for way to many.

I love how this one particular "homeless person story" labels all homeless people at once.

Just because one guy tried to rip you off, does not mean all homeless people lie and are a$$holes.
Some would take that job.

Also what about the mentally ill. What about the homeless people you mentioned at the end of your post. Are they to be thrown aside. They can't help being unfit for work.

Why be so quick to judge folks that have nothing, based solely upon your weak effort to help someone. It sounds like most peoples stories of offiering to sit with a homeless person in an ihop.

You don't really want that... you just want to prove yourself right!

You wanna help homeless people, go to a homeless shelter, bud.
It'll paint the whole picture for you. Plus you won't be sitting in here, complaining about people that have less than you do.

Helping these people is a mixed bag sometimes. I can empathize a bit with those down on their luck, but not the exploiters or outright crazy.

Somebody begs for food, I'll offer to pay their choice of meal at a burger joint or gas station nearby. If that's not what they wanted, then oh well. (Why beg for food then?) When visiting my sister in Seattle, some guy seemed to be glad and actually thankful to take the offer. (And I've heard stories of crazy out there, so I was a little nervous.)

Even if the the thread starter is dismayed by what was found, I've got to commend you for having your heart in the right place. Instead of the rude "get a job!" you're actually offering a job. Which is a big step up, and perhaps what we need more of.

There is so much anger towars beggars in this thread that all seems so misplaced. So many of you have that story about that ONE person, that ONE time. Ever had that happen anywhere else in life? Sometimes people suck. Don't do business with them. Why let it fester into this overall hatred and then keep it to such extent as to repeat it, claimingly years later, with such detail?

For every beggar that sprays crap on your window and then complains you did not pay enough, there is a bank raping you coming and going for made up things. There is an electronics company accepting tax breaks for outsoucing to slave labor in other countries and enjoying their riches in the US. Are you sitting around expounding that hate for all corporations because that one time, the one business did that one thing? What is the difference? They are asking you for money. Just dont give it and move along.

For every beggar that lies to you in order to get your money, there are a million products claiming to make you happier, healthier, skinnier, richer, younger looking, etc. What is the difference? They lie to you and ask for money. Just keep your wallet in your pocket and move on. Perhaps do something positive for someone else, somewhere else and call it a day.

These people are asking for money just like EVERYONE ELSE you talk to all day. From the jerk and burger king that cannot serve fresh fries to the kids wanting their allowance for not doing chores. People ask for money all day long and then I sit down and pay bills to people that say I owe them money. I do not see the differenece. If they are not selling anything good, don't buy it. To sit around and label everyone in any group evil and be so hateful about it seems really odd to me. I do not see the same hatred for every Bank CEO or every lazy short order cook on the planet. What did beggars do to be so special? Enjoy that fabulous life of being a beggar? Jealous?

The facade and false fronted lives we live is all to well to be seen. Step outside that facade and be prepared to receive criticism for not supporting it.

American's say that they are the most charitable and giving nation on the earth, no doubt to receive praise, but where does most of that charity come from?

Who deserves more praise? An old poor man that gives some of his money to homeless family living in a shelter, or one of these rich tycoons that gives to another country as a means of control no doubt, all as a tax write off, and publicized in the media for maximum effect.

OP the problem is you. You made someone an offer. You negotiated. They politely declined after calcualting their ability to fit YOUR job offer into HIS life, time, physical ability, other obligations, etc etc.

You, OP, think that all 7 billion humans shoudl conform to your own limited framework of understanding and functioning withing this cosmic reality we find ourselves in.

You dont know the guy or his situation and its not my nor his obligation to hold your hand and sit you down and explain why your reality isnt the same as teh other 7 billion people on Earth and that your arrogance is the real problem with the world today.

The guy said "no". That should be enough for you to say Ok Thanks for talking with me, have a good day, and walk your ass away without judging him liek you're THE high and mighty.
