Wowsers. After reading everyone's opinions on this issue, I just had to post.

I think all three people involved in this situation are guilty, in a way. I mean think about it:

Obviously the man is the most guilty. He should have known better than to even go near a 15 year old girl (I mean nevermind starting a relationship with her and getting her pregnant). Regardless of that... if for some reason they were "in love" as some people suggest, he should made sure of her age and if there were any doubts, he should have at least looked at some sort of identification. If he loved her... he would have waited until she turned of age.
And as for the pedophile comments... yeah, the guy is a friggin' tool for not being able to get women his own age; but at 15, the girl he was with is a young woman... not a child. Pedophiles are into children, not young people who have gone through puberty already.

The girl is guilty too. Let's put US law aside and just think of this on a human to human basis. This young woman, because that's what she is... a young woman..., should have known better than to get mixed up with an older man. And don't say that she's young and immature and didn't know any better, because I think that's just insulting her intelligence. I was a 15 year old girl once, and there is no way in hell I'd be hanging around 25 year old's... mostly because it's a clear cut sign that someone's a loser (or they have alternative motives) if at 25 they can only find young, supposedly naive, friends.

The mother is the least guilty, although I'm sure her lack of action was part of what made this pregnancy come to fruition. As someone said above, when you have a teenager the only thing you could really do to definitely keep them from doing something that they're dead-set on is to chain them to the wall. When I was a teenager, no matter how hard my parent's tried... I'd do what I wanted to do (luckily my teenage rebellion was short lived). A classic example: they'd lock up the liquor to keep me away from it, but I'd find a way to either pick the lock or literally take apart the whole cabinet by the hinges. Teenagers can be highly ingenuous. So even if the mother forbid her daughter from seeing this man, and even if the mother locked her in her room... the girl would find a way to get out and see him. But in a serious situation like this, the mother should have called the police when she first found out about the man, or at least before the pregnancy occurred.

So yeah, this is a lose-lose-lose situation... except for the precious new life that will be brought into the world. Of course, before said new life arrives, professionals should make sure the environment is appropriate, and the mother (the 15 year old) is capable of handling the difficulties of raising a child.

Why is the general consensus that a pedophile is someone who is attracted to underage young women? It's not. That's called hebephilia, or ephebiphilia.

Being a ephebiphile isn't a disease. Acting on these desires may be illegal, and generally speaking, is a gray area within society, where it depends on context and consent of both parties to be socially acceptable.

Pedophilia is strictly having a primary attraction to prepubescents. If there are any monsters here, it's those who have this attraction and act on it. Don't go throwing out the pedo word when it's obviously not so.

I will have to fan ignorance from perpetual fear of the unknown. I was 19 and married my wife when she was 16. Not really much of a difference here people. I was asked by my wife to go on a date and asked my mother inlaw and father inlaw if it was ok. before we were allowed to go on a date I was asked a lot of questions and I was honest and if I was in their position i'd do the same. We were married in her senior year in H.S and had a baby when she graduated from H.S. My wife later went to nursing school to get a Rn liscense and we have two great kids together.
I had to sign a contract to my mother and father inlaw when we started dating that I'd be responsible and not have sex with her. I signed the document that was drawn up by their lawyer. It is legal to marry under the age of 18 if you have consent and blessing from the parents. I stood by my word and together we are successful and happy. Too many people jump on the bandwagon of calling people a pedophile because they are in a relationship with said person under 18. The lame excuse of the kids don't know what they want is only true if the said teenager is incapable of critical thinking. I do support choices of two people to make a commitment and it seems he wanted to make a commitment and they were denied that right. BTW this guy is not classified as a pedophile and ignorant people wouldn't know the difference if tit hit them in the face.
The age difference is a fairly wide and find that strange in the OP but who is to say that they couldn't of had a happy successful marriage like mine? Keep in mind that I did not go looking for a younger woman and I actually preferred older women but she asked me several times and I relented. "morality is simply an issue of time and culture" the reason I state that is because it was perfectly fine 50 or 100 yrs ago to marry that young and now it isn't. It is perfectly fine in other countries and why is it wrong in the U.S frame of mind? Is it because we haven't taught our kids to respect themselves and learn the hard truths of life? Just grow up people and realize to make decisions out of knowledge and not fear of the unknown boogie man. My grandparents both were married on valentines day 1899 at 14 yrs old they were married for 72 yrs before they died in a housefire. Just remember that and not to automatically assume that because a person is below 18 means they are stupid and can't tie their own shoes in the morning. People just need to do better parenting and let the kids make their own decisions in life and be supportive and offer critical advice to life questions.

Why is she an idiot? She was dating the guy apparently.
Honestly the guy isn't a pedophile. By that age the girl is a young woman he isn't attracted to a child or anything.
He was in the wrong because she isn't emotionally developed (a modern phenomenon that 15 year olds are so immature).

If they were dating they should just let the guy go, take care of the girl and the baby and marry her.

Here is some sense brought in to this thread. I know myself as a teen, hooked up with older women knowing full well it was against the law, but I WANTED TO. Was I immature? Sure...was I sexually mature? Damn right. Adulthood needs to be redefined. Again, we see people making social issues into criminal ones. This is a social dispute, not a criminal case. He DID NOT VICTIMIZE A CHILD so don't even play that game fools.

This is more in America, I know people from another country where young women can marry by age 15 and have kids and alot of them live toghether for the rest of their lives, Im sure this wasnt uncommon in the old days.
If this guy wants to help raise the child, the obvious thing is to let him pay the childs education and what not.
The Mother should of taken care of her daughter and taught her not to sleep with older men. How is this not the child fault unless she was brutality raped against her will. But this does not seem like the case.

I guess we are going to have to wait 3 more years too see if this girl really loves this man, since at age 18 you are considered an "adult" I suppose

Im not agreeing with his behavior i am against such thing but isnt it ironic that it used to be culture for an older man to marry and have relations with women this age. Its still culture in a lot places around the world today. Even some of the most prominent men in history by todays standards would be considerex pedophiles.

Then you must have not hit puberty yet.

the only twist is your warped idea of love. no way they were a romantic couple. she was a sexual partner to him and the sad thing is she probably loved him and will have the baby and be forever tainted as either a single mother who is scorned; or a scorned woman who is unhappy in her attempt at continued love for the pedo. this sickens me; i cant figure out which is worse the age difference or the victim hood she will enter by having a child with some 25 year old user and abuser of sexuality who has effectively eliminated any possibilities for a normal kid her own age to love her without being a victim in the process himself. since you touched on how the mother maybe on welfare i think those are cursed wishes on your part; she will most likely if motivated properly continue to live a victimized existence doing what society tells her is necessary and seeking what she desires at the detriment to all around herself.

this is a good example of why abortion in america is legal. she made a miss take; he took advantage of a cruel opportunity.

I have read all the comments here and I agree with the posters who said the guy should go to jail and the mother be punished too. I mean she DID know about it, for a whole year, and didn't inform the police.

I have a question too, pardon my ignorance but... can't a teenager get a driver's license at 16 in the US? They are not considered children then, so why are we calling this girl "child"? I think we should refer to her as "minor".

Yes, I know she was 14 when they started dating, and I agree that the guy should go to jail so he can be "taught" not to mess with underage girls. (I mean, if you don't want your rear taken care of in jail, then don't do anything illegal, see how simple it is?)

I wonder what the document he offered to sign said and why the mother didn't accept.

Maybe the mother didn't do enough to keep them apart and You question the lack of discipline.

How many kids do you have? Do you have any teenagers?

I don't know where this was or where you live but in many states the age of consent is 15 years old, or lower.

15 years old:
Connecticut
Virginia
Colorado

14 years old:

Hawaii
Idaho

And 32 states 16 years old is the legal age of consent.

Let's be clear on this.... I DO NOT agree with child abuse or being a pedophile!

That being said girls age 14 -15 were married 100 years ago and only today the laws make it illegal to court an young woman. I know girls that are 14, 15, 16 that are far more mature than girls that are 20 - 25 years old.

I think it's hard to put an age on when a person is mature enough for a relationship.

I dated ladies when I was 20 and she was 18-19 and her 15 year old sister was WAY more mature and level headed.

If the state where they live say's it was illegal then he should go to jail and if the mother knew about it she should be charged with child endangerment.

Yes. It's a win.

In response to the poster that stated the ages of consent of the different states- even though the ages you listed are the state laws for ages of consent the police will still arrest the man for statutory rape. I read in the news about men in their 20's being convicted of rape for having intercourse with a 16 yr old here in Pennsylvania. I do believe 16 is the age of consent here but I could be wrong.

I met my wife when she was 16, I was 25 . We married when she was 18 without the consense of her father. We are now happily married for nearly a decade and I would give my life for my wife. Is that wrong?
